Brother Pques, surely this island is the dream of every monk?Its true. With its palm trees, the sea, the sun, and the scents of nature, the Lrins Abbey is a little paradise. I would prefer to live in the mountains, surrounded by wild nature. Ultimately, however, it is important that one is at ease and in harmony with oneself; the actual place plays only a minor role. God has led me here, so Im here.

How did you find God?This is always a personal encounter, and is there-fore comparable to falling in love. It happens in the course of events throughout our lives. One does not enter into the monastery because they were hurt or disappointed, even if one is naturally healed here of their fears and doubt as they find inner peace. One goes to the monastery because they followed a call.What are people searching for when they come to your monastery for a few days?There are diff erent reasons. A religious motive led them here 20 years ago; they were Christians, Catholics. Today, in our less religious society, people come to nd themselves. This sounds tough: If we must be found, it means that we have been lost. If you need to collect yourself, it means you wander aimlessly. This hurts me, because it

is an expression of the helplessness in which the people of our society are in today; a society that gives us the illusion of happiness, but no real joy. Our mission is to be there to give comfort, and to help make sense of it all. What do people take with them from the island?They have for a few days - or even just a few hours disengaged from the world. Aft er this period of silence, of meditation, people return to their everyday lives, stronger, we hope. Our most important task is to help them rediscover God.What do you think of the Bling Bling side of the French Riviera?We smile at this so-called side of the Cte. But behind everything Bling Bling there are human beings who have the same basic need as everyone else: to be loved. That should never be forgotten

Wonderful films are shown, made by talented people who can translate experiences into pictures and sound to tell us a story. But I am actually against one thing: casinos. They are hell to me - the people, old people, stuck to those slot machines as though their life depended on it. How can one live off the misery of these people? I detest this side of the Riviera.What brings you the most joy in life?When I feel that I am useful to someone, that I can help them on their way. We must also take care of business, but actually its wasted time. What counts are the people we accompany along the way.What do you like most about winter in the Cte dAzur?I can only speak about the island of Saint Honorat, where I live. In winter I like how nature finds peace before it flourishes again in the spring. Everything appears to die, but we all are preparing for the spring awakening and the new life ahead.

Ist diese Insel eigentlich der Traum eines jeden Mnchs?Es stimmt: Mit ihren Palmen, dem Meer, der Sonne, den Dften der Natur ist die Abbaye de Lrins ein kleines Paradies. Ich fr meinen Teil wrde aber lieber in den Bergen leben, umgeben von wilder Natur. Entscheidend ist jedoch letztlich, dass man sich wohlfhlt und mit sich selbst im Einklang ist; der Ort selbst spielt da nur eine geringe Rolle. Mich hat Gott hierher gefhrt, also bin ich hier.Wie haben Sie Gott gefunden?Das ist immer eine persnliche Begegnung, es ist vergleichbar damit, sich zu verlieben. Es geschieht im Laufe von Ereignissen, im Laufe unseres Lebens. Man tritt nicht ins Kloster ein, weil man verletzt oder enttuscht wurde, auch wenn man hier natrlich von ngsten oder Zweifeln geheilt wird und seinen inneren Frieden findet. Man geht ins Kloster, weil man einem Ruf folgt. Was suchen die Menschen, die fr einige Tage bei Ihnen im Kloster leben?Das ist unterschiedlich. Vor 20 Jahren kamen sie aus einem religisen Motiv heraus, sie waren Christen, Katholiken. Heute, in unserer weniger religisen Gesellschaft, kommen die Menschen, um sich selbst zu finden, sich wieder zu sammeln. Das klingt hart: Wenn man sich finden muss, heit das, man hat sich verloren. Wenn man sich sammeln muss, bedeutet das, man irrt ziellos umher. Das schmerzt mich, denn es ist Ausdruck der Hilflosigkeit, in der die Menschen unserer Gesellschaft sich befinden. Eine Gesellschaft, die uns eine Illusion von Glck beschert, aber kein wirkliches Glck. Unsere Aufgabe ist es, da zu sein, Trost zu spenden, zu helfen einen Sinn zu finden.
