Bakit gusto natingmag-SELFIE?

Likes and the nice commentsmakes us feel good. It is a formof self-confidence and self-es-teem booster.

Kamakailan lamang aypinangalanan ng Time Maga-zine ang Makati City bilangSelfie capital of the world.

Isang pagpapatunayna people love and want to looktheir best most of the time - orall the time.

Pagkatapos ay iishare natinito sa Facebook or Instagram forthe world to see. Bakit namannatin ito ginagawa? Because the

Overseas jobs await priest graduatesWhat started as an

initial curiosity aboutthe seminary broughtLuyun to full-fledgedpriesthood.

‘Most wanted’Priests, like fresh

graduate Luyun, areeasily the Philippines’“most wanted,” ac-cording to ArchbishopEmeritus Oscar Cruzin an interview withthe INQUIRER inSeptember last year.

In 2004, the ratioof Catholics per priestin the Philippines was8,500 to 1. The figureballooned to at least11,500 to 1 in 2010,an indication that thenation’s Catholic pop-ulation is growingfaster than the num-ber of priests.

The priests in thecountry, about 9,040by the end of 2013,are still too few to at-tend to the spiritualneeds of roughly 76million FilipinoCatholics.

Elsewhere in theworld, the shortage ofpriests is shown in thehigh ratio of Catholicsper priest. Accordingto a story in theBoston Globe byrenowned Vatican an-alyst John Allen Jr.,the ratio in NorthAmerica, excludingMexico, stands at1,590 to 1. In Africa,it is 4,875 Catholics toevery priest; in Cen-tral America, 6,894 to1; in South America,7,135 to 1; and inAsia, 2,300 to 1.

Allen, speaking atthe DWST alumnihomecoming to markthe institution’s 50thanniversary on March12, said Filipinoswere the newIrish—the diaspora ofFilipino migrants iswhat is keeping faithcommunities aliveand well in othercountries.

“You are the thenew missionaries, the

new evangelists, thenew apostles,” Allensaid, addressing theDWST audience.

“I am proudly con-vinced that the futureof Catholicism in the21st century is beingworked out in venuesexactly like this one. What you are doing isincredibly precious inthe eyes of God andit’s incredibly valuablefor the rest of us.”

Those words ringtrue for a good num-ber of the priest grad-uates of DWST whowill soon be in thefront lines of this Fil-ipino diaspora, keep-ing the faith alivearound the world.

Proud parentsLike many parents,

Jane and Abraham Ba-nawa Sr. are proudand happy to havetheir son, Arjay, gradu-ate with a Bachelor ofArts in Theology, cumlaude. On their son’sjourney to the priest-hood, Jane said, “Thatis the choice he madeand we support him.”

The Banawas areblessed to have bene-factors ease the cost

of tuition and boardand lodging. But noteveryone is as lucky.

Piodo, 29, had totake a one-year leavedue to financial con-straints. Various factorscan come into play andhinder one’s vocation.

According to Arch-bishop Cruz, seminar-ies are not producingenough priests tobridge the gap be-tween need and reali-ty. “For every 100seminarians, onlyabout 10 becomepriests,” he said.

Moreover, academ-

ic pressure can get toseminarians some-times.

Lacandula, 28, ad-mits to losing motiva-tion and getting tired, especially during theirannual comprehensiveexams. He cited an in-stance when he want-ed to explore the out-side world and be adisc jockey. Ultimate-ly, however, he perse-vered and graduatedmagna cum laude.

Priestlychallenges

For some, disillu-sionment, loneliness,

or loss can be a stum-bling block.

In his first month,Ortalla expected aholy atmosphere andholy people, only tofind chaos and noise. The next eight yearsstretched out beforehim like a less fruitfulroad and delay in hisservice.

Luyun initiallystruggled with home-sickness. He wouldwake up in the middleof the night crying.

HE SPEAKS Ilocano, English and Taga-log, with a smattering of Hebrew andGreek.

But now, Fr. LouieA. Luyun, 31, has tolearn Japanese, begin-ning with its threewriting sys-tems—katakana, hira-gana and kanji—as heprepares for assign-ment to the Land ofthe Rising Sun.

Unlike thousandsof fresh graduateslooking for jobs butmore likely to join theswelling ranks of theunemployed, Luyunand eight other SVDconfreres who gradu-ated from DivineWord Seminary-Tagaytay (DWST)have their paths setbefore them.

Founded in 1963,DWST is a school oftheology designed toequip missionaries forlocal and foreign as-signments. Most of itsstudents are seminari-ans from a cluster of18 autonomous affiliat-ed houses of formation.

Each priest and rev-erend had already giv-en their top three as-signment preferences, even before the SVDGeneralate could de-cide their fate last July.

Happily, many gottheir top pick. Jay B.Baliao will be work-ing in East Timor;Jonas L. Piodo, inGermany; Eric B. La-candula, Jonathan B.Ortalla and PhilanderL. Pinalgan, in Africa;and John FerdinandM. Cruz, Jerome A.Ormita and ThomasA. Nuwa Wele, in thePhilippines.

Most of the 35priests, deacons andseminarians whocompleted a four-yearecclesiastical coursefrom DWST hadknown their assign-ments long before theMarch 22 graduation.

(This year’s graduatesinclude 29 seminari-ans with a Bachelorof Arts in Theologyand 32 lay and reli-gious sisters from theCertificate of Theo-logical Studies.)

‘It’s a gift’The missionaries’

assignments may beclear, but the path toit was not so clear-cut.

Luyun, the classvaledictorian, said be-coming a priest wasnot part of his plan:“It’s a gift. I neverdreamed of becominga priest—let alone areligious missionarypriest.”

Other career op-portunities are avail-able. Luyun finished adegree in educationat St. Paul Universityin Tuguegarao Cityand taught for a year.

His batch mate,Ormita, 38, spent sixyears teaching. Ortal-la, 42, worked inmerchandising for 10years. Cruz, 32, agraduate of the Uni-versity of SantoTomas, worked as acivil engineer for twoyears before enteringthe seminary.

All of them echoedthe same sentiment:discontent with sim-ply working and earn-ing money. They werein pursuit of some-thing more.

In hindsight,Luyun now sees howvarious experiences inhis life had beenpreparing him for hisvocation. As a child,he would tag alongwith the parish priestto various barrios, de-spite bad weather, mud and rain.

He was active inthe Church as an altarserver and choirmember.

SNICKERS® takes it up a notch with 'You're notyou when you're hungry' Campaign for 2014.MAKATI CITY, 9th MARCH

2014 - Today, Mars Philippines,Inc. announced the newest takeon the SNICKERS® You're Not YouWhen You're Hungry campaign,by kicking off with a brand-newtelevision commercial called,"Rocker Grandma".

We all know of that certainsomeone who turns into acompletely different person whenhunger strikes. The "symptoms" ofhunger varies from someoneacting strangely, to losingconcentration at school, or even, throwing a fit when there's nofood in your refrigerator. Basedon that simple, universal truth,You're Not You When You'reHungry has become a successfulglobal brand proposition. For thefourth-year running, SNICKERS®

has rooted itself beyond just achocolate bar that satisfieshunger, but it straightens "hungrypeople" back to normal.

The 30-second TV spot featuresa rock band jamming in a livingroom. The drummer, who is theprotagonist of the spot, is heardplaying awfully out of beat by hisfellow band mates. It turns outthe drummer is a physically weakyet feisty grandmother. They thenrealise something's amiss. Hungerhas taken over the drummer. Oneof the band members instantlyhands him a delicious, substantialbar of SNICKERS®, to save

him from the wrath of hunger. Thus, transforming theprotagonist back to his usual, drummer self.

The commercial clearly

demonstrates and proves thatSNICKERS® continues to satisfyhunger and helps to keep youthsgoing, even during a long-hauljamming session. Other famousspots within the global campaigninclude characters like BettyWhite, Robin Williams, Kenny G,the Joker, and more.

The new commercial will kick-start an exciting year forSNICKERS® in the Philippineswith an integrated campaign thatis designed to leverage on themusic platform. "We wanted thiscampaign to resonate well withthe young adults from all walks oflife, and music is an engagingplatform that is understooduniversally", said Ng See Meng,Marketing Director of MarsSoutheast Asia.

TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2014 7FEATURESOverseas jobs await priest graduatesboth struggled withtheir respective moth-ers’ deaths.

Wele’s mother,Anastasia Tuga, hadbeen the one who en-couraged him to enterthe seminary. Whenshe died of breast can-cer last June, the painwas so overwhelmingthat he no longer felthe belonged to theSVD community.

“I just wanted toblame everybody,”Wele said.

Pinalgan lost hismother, Carmen, tocolon cancer in 2005.Trying to be strongfor the family, he kepthis grief to himselfand almostquit—partly, due to fi-nancial concerns, butalso subconsciouslybecause of grief.

In the end, theystayed. For Wele, be-ing a priest was achoice he made to bethe “good person” hismother had hoped hewould be. He askedfor prayers so they

would keep persever-ing: “We need prayer.”

Pinalgan got intouch with his griefand visited his mother’sgrave to talk to her.But it is his prayer lifethat keeps him goingduring moments of cri-sis, when some prob-lems can be broughtonly before God.

Having overcomethe rigorous in-house,on-the-job trainingthat could range fromeight to 11 years, the

priest graduates aregearing for specificassignments.

Despite his innateaffinity for Japan,Luyun is bracing him-self for the challengesof working in a first-world country. He ex-pects the struggle tocome from not get-ting any results toshow for his efforts.

“What will I do? …I might spend 50years there and notexperience officiating

a wedding or baptiz-ing anyone,” he said.

In addition to astudy of the place andlanguage, Luyun em-phasizes spiritualpreparation—makingsure that he is at-tuned to Christ. Thisconsists of keepingthe basics, such as theLiturgy of the Hoursand everyday readingsfor the Mass. Other-wise, he anticipatesthe risk of becomingdry and empty.

Each one has hisown way of prepar-ing. Ortalla eats cornporridge in anticipa-tion of the diet inBotswana, Africa. Hedoes this to conditionhis stomach.

Baliao, 29, hopeshis adaptability—afruit of frequent movesto different places dur-ing childhood—willhelp him with anychallenges that mightcome his way.

Germany-boundPiodo described hisstrategy as a ministryof presence—not tobe a messiah, but tobe a part of the mis-sion in whatever wayhe can. “Whateverthey will give me,whatever they willask of me, I will domy best,” he said.

For Luyun, it boilsdown to choice. “Ev-ery day is a decision tosay yes,” he said. “Tobe a priest, to be a re-ligious is an everydaydecision to say yes tothe One who called.”
