Physicists are using RHIC in this way to investigate a funda- mental question: Where do pro- tons get their “spin”? A magnetic property of par- ticles as basic as mass and elec- trical charge, spin is a particle’s intrinsic angular momentum. The spin of a minute particle such as the proton is classically analo- gous to the spin of a large, com- posite body such as a planet. Understanding spin is of im- portance not only to physicists interested in the interactions of subatomic particles, but also to astronomers studying astro- physical phenomena such as solar winds and to medical sci- entists using magnetic reso- nance imaging to diagnose in- jury and disease. In spin-polarized proton beams, a percentage of the pro- tons are spinning in the same direction. It took many years, and much hardware and dedi- cated staff to turn RHIC into the world’s only collider capable of accelerating and colliding high- energy spin-polarized protons (see photos). Ready for its first polarized proton run last November, RHIC accelerated two beams of protons with 25 percent polar- ization to 100-billion electron volts (GeV) per nucleon — the first record to be set. These beams were then collided, producing a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV — another benchmark. “During this very short run, all the components required for successful polarized-proton ac- celeration worked flawlessly, thanks to the hard work of the BNL staff and many collabora- tors from the U.S., Japan, and Russia,” said Thomas Roser, head of the Accelerator Division of BNL’s Collider Accelerator Department, whose accelerator physicists and other staff pro- duced the polarized-proton run. Now analyzing data collected from the inelastic collisions of polarized protons, spin physi- cists on RHIC’s two largest ex- periments — PHENIX and STAR — hope these results will help reveal what makes up a proton’s spin. These experimenters and theorists include members of the RIKEN-BNL Research Center (RBRC), headquartered at the billiard balls, via the nuclear, or strong, force, which is one of the four fundamental forces in nature. Summing up spin “Unlike previous experi- ments at the Alternating Gradi- ent Synchrotron and other ac- celerators around the world, data from the collisions of spin- aligned [polarized] protons at RHIC will allow us to tease apart the individual contributions to spin of both the quarks and the gluons within the proton,” ex- plains BNL Senior Physicist Gerry Bunce of the Physics De- partment, who is leading the RHIC Spin Collaboration. It was long thought that the spin of a proton, which has a value of !/2, resulted from the spins of its three constituent quarks. Experiments through the 1990s, however, have shown that the quarks account for only about one quarter to one third of the proton’s spin. That has left the scientists with the question: What accounts for the rest of the proton’s spin? The most likely explanation, physicists think, is that gluons, which are the carriers of the strong force holding quarks to- gether, must also contribute to the proton’s spin. The hypothesis is that, for gluons to contribute such a large proton-spin effect, the vast majority of them must be spin- ning in the same direction. In addition to setting up the RIKEN-BNL Re- search Center (RBRC) on site as a home for visiting theorists and experimentalists pursuing spin physics at RHIC, RIKEN pro- vided much of the hardware needed to collide polarized pro- tons at RHIC, plus a spin-phys- ics detector for PHENIX. Within the RHIC accelerator- collider complex, polarized protons start out as polarized negative ions of hydrogen. Af- ter acceleration by the AGS Linac, the polarized hydrogen ions are stripped of their elec- trons. Now polarized protons, these particles are further accel- erated to higher and higher en- ergies, as they make their way from the Booster, to the AGS, and into RHIC. Because spinning protons are like tiny magnets, keeping the beams polarized, however, is no easy task. After initial po- larization, the beam moves through the bending and fo- cusing magnets of four accel- erators, all of which interfere with polarization. To overcome this problem, BNL and RIKEN worked with the Budker Institute in Russia to design and build specialized sets of four magnets, two for each RHIC ring. These “Siberian snakes” (see photo, left) have a corkscrew-like design, which causes the direction of the mag- netic field to spiral along the direction of the beam. To maintain stable beam polarization, a snake works by first suggested in 1990 that po- larized protons also be acceler- ated at RHIC. The following year, the RHIC Spin Collabora- tion was established, and, in 1993, the proposal for spin physics at RHIC was approved. From last November throughthis January, the Relativistic

Physicists are using RHIC inthis way to investigate a funda-mental question: Where do pro-tons get their “spin”?

A magnetic property of par-ticles as basic as mass and elec-trical charge, spin is a particle’sintrinsic angular momentum.The spin of a minute particle suchas the proton is classically analo-gous to the spin of a large, com-posite body such as a planet.

Understanding spin is of im-portance not only to physicistsinterested in the interactions ofsubatomic particles, but also toastronomers studying astro-physical phenomena such assolar winds and to medical sci-entists using magnetic reso-nance imaging to diagnose in-jury and disease.

In spin-polarized protonbeams, a percentage of the pro-tons are spinning in the samedirection. It took many years,and much hardware and dedi-cated staff to turn RHIC into theworld’s only collider capable ofaccelerating and colliding high-energy spin-polarized protons(see photos).

Ready for its first polarizedproton run last November,RHIC accelerated two beams ofprotons with 25 percent polar-ization to 100-billion electronvolts (GeV) per nucleon — thefirst record to be set. These beamswere then collided, producing acenter-of-mass energy of 200 GeV— another benchmark.

“During this very short run,all the components required forsuccessful polarized-proton ac-celeration worked flawlessly,thanks to the hard work of theBNL staff and many collabora-tors from the U.S., Japan, andRussia,” said Thomas Roser,head of the Accelerator Divisionof BNL’s Collider AcceleratorDepartment, whose acceleratorphysicists and other staff pro-duced the polarized-proton run.

Visitors to the Lab can nowuse their personal comput-

ers to access the Internet directlyby using wireless modems with-out compromising BNL com-puter security. The wireless ser-vice is available in the Berknerauditorium as well as in BerknerRoom B, areas that see the high-est concentration of visitors.

According to the InformationTechnology Division’s (ITD)Network Operations ManagerScott Bradley, the division in-stalled the wireless access pointsto support the collaborativeneeds of the BNL visitor commu-nity and the Lab’s own scientists.“As more Lab funds become avail-able, we’ll install additional wire-less access points in other majormeeting areas,” said Bradley.

One user who gives kudos toITD for providing the new ser-vice is Jim Thomas, a LawrenceBerkeley National Laboratoryphysicist with the STAR collabo-

ration at RHIC. “Our productiv-ity is driven by the 25-year-oldcrowd, who use wireless tools,”said Thomas. “Go to any meet-ing nowadays and you’ll find thekey clicks deafening. It’s all theyoung people. They just keepworking, talking to a supercom-puting facility no matter wherethey are.”

Visitor Network

ITD has also installed walljacks in conference rooms andcommon-use areas around thesite. “We call this the VisitorNetwork,” said Bradley, who ex-plained that 52 color-codedjacks provide external Internetaccess for visitors not requiringinternal BNL network access. Asa result, these visitors do nothave to register their comput-ers with BNL or be otherwise im-peded by the Lab’s cyber security.

needed unrestricted Internet ac-cess to reach their home institu-tions,” said Bradley. “Having theVisitor Network in departmentand division public work spacesmakes external network accessmuch more convenient.”

Bradley thanked all the build-ing representatives who workedwith him, Project Manager Vin-cent Bonafede, and others in ITDto find the best locations for thewall jacks.

It’s simple to use the VisitorNetwork, Bradley said. “Find apurple wall jack and plug in yourlaptop. World’s First Colliding Polarized Protons (cont’d.)

On March 2, a team of BNL bowlers won the championship inthe 2002 Long Island Men’s Industrial Tournament, having

played four games a week over four weeks at North Levittown Lanesin Nassau County.

According to Rich Deem, Energy Sciences & Technology Depart-ment, who put the team together, this year’s group had to over-come a strong showing from Northrop/Grumman as well as fromlast year’s champion, BAE Systems. “After the first week, the teamwas in fifth place out of a field of 18,” Deem recalled. The secondweek, after combining to play a tournament high team game of1046, the team moved into second place. During week three, theBNLers edged out Northrop/Grumman for the lead.

The last two games were the most exciting, Deem says, becauseBNL withstood major pushes from BAE Systems, which bowled ateam high game of 1025, and Northrop/Grumman, which closedwithin 17 pins after the first two games. BNL prevailed, however,ending up with a 135-pin margin of victory.

“We look forward to going back next year to defend the champi-onship,” said Deem. “A back-to-back win would be nice, and withsuch a strong team, BNL has a good chance of a repeat.”

“While the group is still early inits development, it has success-fully provided a forum to shareideas, concerns, and knowl-edge for BNL women in engi-neering, computer science,and other technical fields.”

Zhang explained that fe-males make up only a smallpercentage of the engineeringpopulation at BNL and work indifferent areas throughout thesite. So, they do not have regu-lar interaction with each otherin their individual work envi-ronments.

“That’s why a group of us de-cided to start BWEN,” Zhangsaid.

With the help of the Diver-sity Office, the Human ResourcesTraining Office, and the Stan-dards Based Management Sys-tem Office, BWEN was set upand now meets monthly in Berk-ner Hall. Participants take turnsin hosting the meetings, givinginformal talks on their areas ofexpertise, and coming up withideas for future discussions.

“This gives everyone in thegroup the opportunity to grow,”

commented Zhang. In additionto regular meetings, the grouphas also sponsored presentationson topics such as AutoCad, in-ternational atomic safeguards,and program analysis.

In MemoriamMadeline Meo, who had taken a position as a Chemistry De-partment research services assistant on July 29, 1974, and hadleft the Lab on November 30, 1982, died on September 23,2001. She was 81.

Eleanor Murgatroyd, who, as a clerk B, had joined theDirector’s Office on November 14, 1962, died at age 76 onJuly 29, 2001. She had moved to the Budget Office and be-come an assistant budget analyst before retiring from the Labon March 31, 1987.

Casimer Nawrocki, Life No. 968, who had come to BNL onJune 16, 1947, as an electronics research associate in the HealthPhysics Department, died on September 25, 2001, at the ageof 88. He had retired as Experimental Engineer 1 from theInstrumentation Division on December 31, 1977, after 30years of service.

Ronald Graeser, who had joined BNL’s Reactor Physics Groupas a technician on October 14, 1952, died on September 28,2001, at age 77. After 35 years’ service, he had retired as Tech-nical Associate II from the Department of Advanced Technol-ogy on April 3, 1988.

Maddie Miles, who had joined the Staff Services Division asa custodian on July 25, 1973, and had left BNL on June 24,1983, died on October 24, 2001, at the age of 83.

Alice Mabry, who, on March 17, 1947, had joined PersonnelRecords as a clerk A with Life No. 193, died on December 11,2001 at age 88. She had given 30 years’ service to BNL beforeretiring as an administrative assistant on December 31, 1977.

Clemens Auerbach, who had joined the former Departmentof Nuclear Energy on July 23, 1956 as an assistant analyticalchemist, and had retired as a chemist after 36 years at the Labon December 31, 1992, died on January 20, 2002. He was 78.

Day Run/Walk on Saturday,April 20, at 3 p.m. Children 12 andunder are invited to participate ina free one-half-mile Fun Run at 4p.m. Race-day registration/check-in will begin at 1 p.m. inBerkner Hall. All entry fees fromthe 4-mile event will benefitLong Island Cares, Inc., a re-gional food bank. All visitors toBNL age 15 and older are re-quired to bring a photo ID to beadmitted.

The race will be held on a U.S.Track & Field Federation certifiedcourse consisting of a combina-tion of road and wide trails through the PineBarrens on site. The course is relatively flat, withsome slight rolling hills in the last mile. Mileswill be marked, a two-mile water stop will beavailable, and mile split times will be called out.
