Prayer Corner “Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death.” Proverbs 8: 32-26.

We take time to listen, watch and wait upon the Lord each Tuesday evening at 6:45 pm, during prayer time. Come receive your blessing!

Bites of Bread from Bob How many books can you identify by their opening lines? Many of the great books have an opening line that draws us in. Here is a test for you. You can find the answers at the end of this article. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” “ It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Men you may not want to admit it if you know the answer. Here is an easier one. “I am Sam, Sam I am.” The next one is sort of a trick question. “In the beginning…” It is a trick question because the obvi-ous answer is the book of Genesis, but it is also the beginning of the Gospel of John. In writing his Gospel, John purposefully begins with the opening of the book of Genesis and even continues with some similar language about “light” and “dark.” John’s effort is to show us how there is a new beginning is Jesus Christ.

Our Fall Bible Study this year will focus on the book of Genesis. The word “Genesis” even means “beginning.” Below is a reading schedule for Fall Bible Study. Another challenge for you would be to see how many new many beginnings you can discover in the book. We can find in Genesis that God is a God of new beginnings. Most of us could really use a new beginning. We have started many things that we have not completed. That is the reason we like the idea of New Year’s resolutions. They are an opportunity for us to begin again. It was also in the book of John that Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born

again.” (3:3) Praise God for new beginnings. Fall Bible Study is a tradition of Salem First Christian Church that has been an opportunity to have a new beginning to grow in faith through the study of God’s word. Fall Bible Study begins September 9 (with a preview on Sunday, September 2). On Sunday, September 9, all of our Sunday School classes will start a new study on Genesis called, “An Invitation to Genesis.” We have classes at both 9:45 am and 11:00 am. If you want more information about our classes, pick up the yellow “Adult Bible Studies” flyer at the information center or call the church office. Fall Bible Study can be an opportunity for you to have your own Genesis.

For Children and FamiliesFor Children and FamiliesFor Children and FamiliesFor Children and Families A Little Light from Laurie Last Thursday was the final day for all regional camps for the year. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked to make these camps a success. Thank you to our regional ministers, Doug & Cathy Wirt, for your seemingly endless supply of patience and joy. Thank you to the parents for sending your children to experience the joy of God in this awesome way. Thank you to the drivers for getting our kids safely to and from camp. Thank you to those who donate to help make this happen.

Now, that being said, I would like to point out an interesting little fact: Silverton First Christian Church sent approximately twice as many campers as we did this year. Way to go, Silverton! So, how can we increase our numbers? Our church pays for half of the registration fees for each camper from our church, but what else can we do to get the kids to attend? I would like to challenge our church members to prayerfully consider how to make our children and youth a priority in our church. Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me.” What are you willing to do to make that happen?

Backpack School Supply Drive is on! Through your generous donations every year, Children’s Ministries are able to give school supplies to local families, schools and other organizations. Each store has a list of school supplies that schools recommend. Please drop donated items at the church in the grocery cart. And as always, if you know of a need, please let us know.

Flurries from Chris Over the past couple of weeks I have been on a transformative vacation. For those of you who have not already heard or maybe missed the announcement of the date, Jenn and I were married on August 11, 2012. During the time leading up to and following the wedding, I have found myself reflecting on how my life is going to be different from here on out. I have gone through many transitions through my lifetime, mainly having to do with school, and there has always been a feeling of anxiousness about the unknown.

Within the life of the church I see this happen each school year as the church begins a new cycle of programs, Sunday school classes, and budgeting. I have seen on the faces of some of our young people who have moved up to the youth department a sense of wariness about this big change. Throughout this summer Laurie and I have allowed the incoming 6th graders to decide where they go for Sunday school. When they have come up to the youth lounge for the first time they are welcomed by the youth into a large room filled with couches, a pool table, and ping pong table. Many of the first questions I hear or anticipate by their body language is what do I do now? That is a question we all ask when entering into a new situation because we are looking to those who have gone before us for guidance.

When it comes to living in community and beginning new journeys with one person or with a large group we need to remember Jesus’ example as he lived with the sinners of his time and loved them. As we enter into a new church cycle and especially an election time, let us remember that the greatest command-ments are to Love God and to Love our neighbor as our selves. Let us show that love to all that come through the doors, whether they are old members or new visitors.

Holy Land, Anyone? Pastor Bob and his friend Barry Lind are hosting a ten day "Best of Israel" tour the third week of June 2013.

The cost of $3,500 includes: round trip airfare from Portland, 4 star lodging, daily breakfast and dinner.

By this weekend, a flyer will be available at the Information Center or available from Bob with itinerary and additional information.

How Many Bells Do We Have? How many chimes, and do you know the difference? The answer is hiding at the end of this article. What I can tell you, is we are in NEED of ringers!!!!

Here’s the math: If every ringer has 2, we need 49 people! If every ringer has 4, we need 24 and ½ people. If every ringer has 8, we need 12 and ¼ people.

Last year we had 10-12 people, it is hard cutting them in half, though many have been so dedicated that they ring even when they can not stand up, or have only one good hand! All that said, we are not able to ring ALL the wonderful bells and chimes we have been blessed with because we need YOU! Campbellorum (our fancy Latin name referring to the Disciples’ founding father) usually plays during worship once a month, September - June.

We will also join seven other choirs November 3-4 at St. Paul’s for the 3rd annual Handbell Festival. Do not miss out on this outstanding opportunity to glory in the Lord through music. Come see what it is all about Thursday, September 6, from 5:00-6:00 pm downstairs in the “Bell Room”! See ya there!

Please join us! Saturday, September 22, 9:30 am - 12:00 pm is the Alzheimer's Network of Oregon's WALK TO REMEMBER fundraiser. There are two ways you can participate this year:

1. Volunteer as a staff person at the Walk 2. Walk on the FCC team on the 1, 2 or 3 mile

routes.
