1 THE CLOAK A monthly publication of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church June 2016 Colors, Colors, Colors: Welcome to Ordinary Time! You may have noticed how our wonderful altar guild carefully dresses our sanctuary for the seasons of the church year, along with providing vestments for our priests in the right colors. We are a church that uses colors to denote the various Holy Seasons of the church year. They put away red for Pentecost (May 15), replaced it with the white for Trinity Sunday (May 22) and now we bring out the green. Sunday, May 29, was the Second Sunday after Pentecost (also designated as Proper 4.) The liturgical color for this next season called Ordinary Time is green. Ordinary Time is a long season which goes all the way until November 13 which is the twenty- sixth Sunday after Pentecost or Proper 28. The following Sunday, November 20, is the Last Sunday after Pentecost or Christ The King Sunday. November 27 is the First Sunday of Advent, and purple becomes our color of the season. What ARE these liturgical colors? According to Wikipedia, Liturgical colors are those specific colors used for vestments and hangings within the context of Christian liturgy. The symbolism of violet, white, green, red, gold, black, rose and other colors may serve to underline moods appropriate to a season of the liturgical year or may highlight a special occasion. Most Anglican churches use the colors appointed in the Roman Rite, usually in its post-1969 form, but some use the earlier form, with, for instance, black in place of red on Good Friday. Some churches use black at Masses for the dead, but more commonly white or purple is used. For historical reasons much of the worldwide Anglican Communion takes a noticeable lead from the practice of the Church of England. A chart for the colors is shown here: http://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/liturgical-colors.php https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liturgical_colours

Colors, Colors, Colors: Welcome to Ordinary Time!

A word about the Search Process:

The Search Committee and their Chairman are doing their job, following the rules of the Episcopal Church and our Diocese. They are working to find us a new Rector, Preacher, and Priest of the Communion Table. The question is: how will this new person find us, the Community of St. Martin’s Church, Lebanon, Oregon? Will he or she find a discouraged, quarrelsome, impatient and diminishing few, or a loving, vital small church carrying out its ministries, encouraging each other, worshipping God together and looking forward, however long the process, to a new life together with the Priest discerned by our committee? Let us each vow for the second scenario described and help each other to do so. Let us not give way to impatience and discouragement and let us pray every day for the Committee and its work.

~~ Be of Good Cheer! ~~ .

Search Committee Progress Report

We met, reviewed and discussed the two job applications. We are formulating some questions for the applicants. We will meet again on Wed June 1 at 4 pm. Respectfully Submitted Larry James, Search Committee Chair; George Hamilton, chaplain; and members Sue Coakley, Patty Linn, Carolyn Brown, Jim Rutledge, Roger Munk, Florence Christ, and Dena Losier.

Verse from James Weldon Johnson’s Poem “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Lift every voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

The Episcopal Church recognizes Johnson on June 25

OUR HEALTHY CHURCH FAMILY

What if you could address your major health concerns — blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, low energy, loss of lean muscle mass, flagging brain — by eating slightly healthier versions of foods that you enjoy? No more sacrificing, no more guilt. You can. For nearly a decade, Eat This, Not That! books have been helping..people’s health — without giving up the foods they love. In the April/May 2016 issue of AARP The Magazine editors of the Eat This, Not That! book series look at some of the top health concerns all Americans face with food swaps for their health. Check out the full story here: http://www.aarp.org/health/healthy-living/info-2016/healthy-snacks-diet-weight.html#slide1

Mid-Valley “Mass in the Grass” Picnic: Update

In past years, St. Martin’s has happily shared a summer “Mass in the Grass” mid-valley celebration and picnic, with St. Martin’s participation coordinated Jim Johnson. Due to his illness, we did not participate in 2015. Because of strong interest to keep this tradition alive, a meeting was held in April with Ray Hendricks, Dcn. Helen Richard, and Jim Rutledge representing St. Martin’s. Also present were Charlie and Delores Mouradian, Ron Shreve, Melinda Stephens, and, Dcn. Peggy Bernhard. By the time we started planning, it was too late for park reservations this year, especially at a park with decent plumbing and easy access. So the Mid-Valley group will keep planning for 2017. There is a need for quarterly meetings of representatives from the Episcopal churches of the area to discuss common problems, solutions and plans. It would be good to have younger people involved in the committee as well as in the work. Also, the Episcopal churches of the mid-valley used to get together with Lutherans and hold services at the various churches with Holy Communion and refreshments. People enjoyed them. (Idea for future.) Meanwhile, St. Alban’s is planning on a service of installation when Fr. Bob Morrison is installed as Vicar. This will be a service during the week as the bishop needs to attend. However, they are also planning a big celebration to which St. Martin’s, Faith Lutheran and Good Shepherd Lutheran will be invited. It will be on the grassy lot at St. Alban’s in June, near to the date of St. Alban’s Day (June 22). St. Martin’s would reciprocate when our new priest is selected to lead us.

Will return in the Fall

Birthday Card Ministry

Did you know? St. Martin’s would love to send you a card of birthday blessings from your friends at St. Martin’s – but we need to know the date! For years, Lyola hand-painted cards, and she hopes to resume that. Currently, Florence sends the Birthday Cards. Thanks to them for this way to let our St. Martin’s family members know that we think of them.

Shrove Tuesday

Pancakes! Thanks to the St. Martin’s Men for a good Pancake Supper Did we make any money?

Vestry Snapshot by Vestry Clerk, Jennifer Munk Members of St. Martin's vestry had a short meeting on May 18. With Senior Warden Kathy Johnson out of town, Junior Warden Roger Munk led members on a whirlwind tour of reports and decisions. The highlights:

Members agreed unanimously to use $1,100 from the $3,290 in the development fund allocated for the parking lot to pay for striping work, which was done earlier this month.

The Scouts have found a new meeting place but still have some items in the church. Roger will be talking to representatives to determine what they'd like to do next, whether they think they might come back at some point and how the facility might be used if they do.

Supply clergy has been arranged through July, with the exception of June 19. The lineup includes Tom Stevenson of Alsea, retired Bishop John Thornton, then Anne Moore. June 19 is still open and may be morning prayer. After that will come Wes Sedlacek, and then Bishop Thornton for all of July.

On the rector selection front, the selection committee is meeting next Wednesday to go over the two applications received thus far.

Our organ has developed an all-or-nothing volume issue. Vestry members agreed to have organist Ray Hendricks work with the repair company that has fixed it in the past. Our Saviour's Lutheran has also expressed interest in having some organ repair work, so we're going to see if we can share travel costs for the workers.

The question came up at the vestry meeting and members may be looking into changes.

Vestry meetings are now at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month. Your voices are welcome. In addition to the Senior and Junior Wardens, our Vestry members are Barbi Thomson, Jim Rutledge, Sue Coakley and Machelle Davis. Dena Losier, Patty Linn and Jim Bitle just came off, and Jim Rutledge is filling the remainder of Bill Clark's term.

ECW Brief Notes: ECW includes all women of St Martin’s !

What are your thoughts on singing / chanting the Psalms?

Would you like to continue?

Every Sunday, or alternated with spoken

on occasion?

The question came up at the vestry meeting, and members may be looking

into changes.

ANNUAL TRUNK SALE IS COMING –

June 20 is World Refugee Day

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were refugees, so this is an annual opportunity to celebrate the refugees who bless our communities with their wisdom and irrepressible spirit and to examine the root causes of violence and persecution that force people to flee at an alarming rate. This year, The Episcopal Church, in partnership with congregations, volunteers and our network of 30 local affiliate offices in 26 states will welcome more than 5,000 refugees to the United States from 32 countries To raise awareness and support, Episcopalians are encouraged to find a local World Refugee Day activity or plan one of their own.
