MangyansoffersarichartisticheritagetothehistoryofprecolonialPhilippines.Likeanyotherindigenoustribesinthecountrytheirartisanexpressionofsocialrelationsintheircommunityhencetheadage,Artforartssakedoesnotapplytothem.OneoftheirartsistheAmbahan,arhythmicpoeticexpressionwithameterofsevensyllablespresentedthroughrecitationandchanting.AvariationofthisistheUrukay,whereinituseseightsyllablesinstead.TherearenoauthorsofthepoetryandifonewillaskaMangyanwherehelearnedthelinesofthepoem,hedsayitcamefromhisparentsorreadandcopieditfromthebambooshootswheretheyoriginallywritetheirscripts.Thefollowingaresampleofthepoems:

Finally,theMangyanscript.WhentheSpaniardsarrivedinthePhilippines,themorefamousFilipinosystemofwriting,theBaybayinwasdiscarded.However,inMindoro,theBuhidandHanunooMangyanscontinuedtopracticetheirwritingsystem.TheMangyanscriptliketheBaybayinisbasedonthesyllablesofthePhilippinephonetics.TheNationalMuseumdeclaredthissurvivingsystemasNationalCulturalTreasuresonDecember9,1997.TheUNESCOonOctober6,1999,meanwhile,inscribedthescriptsintheMemoryoftheWorldregistry.

Likemostindigenouspeoplearoundtheglobe,thetribesmenareusuallytreatedassecondclasspeopleintheirowncountryandarecommonlysubjectedtoabuse.Therefore,protectionoftheirwayoflivingandpreservationoftheirheritageisessentialinprovidingthemalifewiththesame



equalrightsandaddressingtheirproblemsandneedsinthisfastchangingglobalenvironmentthattheycurrentlylivein.
