Opportunity to Read More This year our students have read a total of 28,531,661 words and 7,229 books according to our Accelerated Reader tracker. Even though this may sound impressive, we are down from last year’s high mark of 46,192,814 words. Our tracker indicates that our students are only reading an average of 17 minutes at home instead of the 30 that we have asked parents to monitor. The California standards state the following: “In addition to their regular school reading, by grade four, students read one-half million words annually, including a good represent-tation of grade-level-appropriate narrative and expository text (classic and contem-porary literature, magazines, newspapers, online information). In grade one, students begin to make progress toward this goal.” It sounds like a lot of words but for example, a fourth grader reads an average of 100 words per minute. If they were to read for at least 30 minutes that would be 3,000 words per day. If they read every day during the entire academic year (180 days), it would be a total of 540,000 words. Keep in mind that students are provided time to read at school, but we are asking what the standard requires, that the students read “in addition to their regular school reading.” Please help your child meet his or her reading goal.
