Fun FactsThe Full Monty has been performed in twelve different countries, including South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Iceland, Sweden, Greece, Australia, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, Croatia and Mexico.

The World Premier of the musical opened at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego where it ran for 35 previews and then moved to Broadway on October 26, 2000. At the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Broadway, The Full Monty ran for 770 performances.

Originally a 1997 Independent British film, The Full Monty took nominations for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay at the 1998 Academy Awards. With the success of the movie, Fox Searchlight Pictures’ producer Lindsay Law produced the musical himself after calling Jack O’Brien to direct and Terrence McNally (Ragtime) to write the book.

Differences in the movie version include changing the setting from Sheffield, England to our own Buffalo, New York, and adding the characters Jeanette, the rehearsal pianist, and the male stripper Keno.

The composer for The Full Monty, David Yazbek, had no previous musical composing experience. He was best known as the composer of the theme for the PBS television show Where In “The World is Carmen Sandiego?” Since then, Yazbek wrote the score for the popular musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

The title is a British slang phrase meaning “the whole thing.” Studio executives for the movie version were confused when they found out there was no character named Monty. Although there is no actual clarification of where the phrase derived from, the most popular explanation evolved from Sir Montague Burton’s tailoring shop where a complete three-piece suit would be called “The Full Monty.” The film’s working title was “Eggs, Beans, and Chippendales.”
