SA Hello Everyone! Welcome to James Cook University Dental Students’ Association’s second newsletter, ‘The Grind’. In this edition you’ll find a summary of Semester Two and the North Queensland Oral Health Convention, some student thoughts on how the year has gone and a few pictures. How fast has the year flown! It seems only a few weeks ago that we were settling into the routine of university life. Now, we are just about the start our exam revision week for the end of Semester Two. The whole year has been nothing short of amazing. The knowledge we have learnt – whether in Sim Lab or in Chemistry practicals; the close friendships that have developed throughout the cohort, and just the funny moments people have shared together are priceless. This semester, so many more social events have happened which I truly think is testament to our cohort becoming closer. Even though there were a few stressful weeks here and there with assessment, everyone has been professional and mature throughout the year. As the inaugural group of JCU dentistry, I believe we have set a great example for the coming students to follow. If you have any suggestions, issues or would like to contribute to ‘The Grind’, please email me at [email protected] .

  Hello Everyone!

AUSTRALIAN DENTAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION (ADSA)

The North Queensland Oral Health Convention was the only dental convention held in Semester Two this year. Held in Cairns at the Sebel International on the 20‐22 August, JCUDSA sponsored eight students to attend. Osmo Hautaniemi, Ariana Mccoll, Sarah Bosnic, Ben Casella, Noy Gliksman, Monika Behrens, Stuart Craig and Mitchell Rae were selected to attend Saturday’s day of events. Tia Riggs and Andrea James were also in attendance. I speak for all of those who attended in saying that the Convention was nothing short of superb and was such an eye‐opening event into just of how wide a profession dentistry is. With over 200 delegates in attendance, we were treated to a wealth of knowledge about a variety of dental topics from well‐known local and interstate speakers. We were very privileged to be given a special welcome from Dr. Greg Moore. Many people were expressing their delight that a regional dental school had finally opened, and will hopefully one day benefit rural and Indigenous oral health. It was a honour to attend, and in the future I see no reasons as to why JCUDSA will not be sponsoring this great event again.

One student has kindly volunteered to share their experiences of this year. Abijah Justus gives us a low down on how the year has been for her.

“The best thing I could use to describe this year is a fair. Along with my initial nerves of fitting in with all the new students in Dentistry and coping with the course, I was extremely nervous about starting University. Who would I sit with at lunch? What if I got lost? What am I supposed to wear?! I guess you could say it was similar to planning a day at the fair. Who am I going with? What happens if I get lost? And again, what am I supposed to wear?  My nerves quickly disappeared after the first day when we were introduced to everyone (and they were absolutely lovely). The only thing I can describe my first anatomy lecture to is a hectic rollercoaster with insane loops. Thrilling at the start, absolute fear throughout the whole ride and that feeling of puking your guts out in the end. Unfortunately there is not one subject I could compare to the nice, easy teacup ride; if only! Getting good exam marks would be the same as trying to win a massive teddy bear. The prize is right there in front of you but you have to do an overcome the hard task, the equivalence to studying everything, to get it. Hit a few balloons with a dart, toss some rings, follow a wire without getting electrocuted or climb an unstable rope like Spiderman.

Similarly through Sim lab I have been tested with my precision and accuracy, dexterity and I would compare avoiding getting electrocuted to trying to drill a proximal box without hitting the next tooth.  But overall I would say that this year of dentistry has been like a massive show bag. Really fun, rewarding, exciting (and also expensive). With exams only a corner away I’ve prepared my room for a solid three weeks of solitude. Although I feel like I’m back in my first anatomy lecture, ready to puke my guts out and in a state of constant fear, I’m loving every minute of it. It’s been a hell of a ride! If only it came with the fairy floss and candy apples”.

The JCUDSA First Year Dental Ball was held at the Reef Hotel Casino, Cairns, on 31st October. Two short speeches were made by Professor Sandham and Noy Gliksman. JCUDSA also had a small number of peer‐voted awards to celebrate “certain attributes” of some students. The food, drinks, music and venue were outstanding.  Overall, the night was an amazing success and a great way to cap off the year; and more importantly, a chance to relax before the hard few weeks of exam study.

Although the only official event held this Semester was the JCUDSA Ball, here are a few pictures of the social times that have happened throughout this Semester.

Without sponsorship, JCUDSA would not be able to host events and sponsorship convention for students. JCUDSA would like to warmly thank MIPS (Medical Indemnity Protection Society); Henry Schein | HALAS; the James Cook University School of Dentistry; Dr. Brian James (of Cairns); and Cairns Orthodontics for their generous donations to JCUDSA. We greatly appreciate your support.
