Ἀδελφοί, βλέπετε μή τις ὑμᾶς ἔσται ὁ συλαγωγῶν διὰ τῆς φιλοσοφίας καὶ κενῆς ἀπάτης,

κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, κατὰ τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου, καὶ οὐ κατὰ Χριστόν·

Χριστουγεννιάτικα καλάθια – Ευχαριστούμε τους δωρητές!

Τα μέλη της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας επιθυμούν να ευχαριστήσουν όλους όσοι δώρησαν

τρόφιμα, χρήματα ή βοήθησαν κατά την προετοιμασία των χριστουγεννιάτικων καλαθιών. Με

τη δική σας συνεισφορά είμαστε, και πάλι, σε θέση να βοηθήσουμε περισσότερες από εκατό

οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη. Για όσους δεν πρόλαβαν να συνεισφέρουν, μπορούν να κάνουν,

ακόμα και τώρα, τη δωρεά τους προς τη Φιλόπτωχο Αδελφότητα.

Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης – Κοπή της βασιλόπιτας, 8 Ιανουαρίου Το ετήσιο γεύμα για την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Κυριακή, 8 Ιανουαρίου,

2017, στο Κοινοτικό μας Κέντρο, στις 12 μ.μ. Είστε όλοι ευπρόσδεκτοι, σε αυτή την πρώτη,

κοινή μας συνάντηση για το νέο έτος, κατά την οποία ο πατήρ Αλέξανδρος θα ευλογήσει και θα

κόψει την βασιλόπιτα. Τα εισιτήρια είναι 25 δολ. για ενήλικες, 12 δολ. για παιδιά 6-12 ετών και

δωρεάν για παιδιά κάτω των 5 ετών.

Το “Campus Ministry” είναι ένας οργανισμός που προσφέρει συμπαράσταση σε νέους και νέες,

Christmas Baskets THANK YOU

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society, would like to thank everyone who donated food, funds

and their time to make the annual Christmas baskets program a success. We were able to help

over 100 families this year. If you wanted to contribute and didn't have the opportunity to do

so, you can still make a monetary donation to the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society.

Philoptochos Vasilopita Luncheon - January 8th

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society’s annual Vasilopita Luncheon will be held at the

Banquet Centre on Sunday, January 8th at 12:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to

attend our first gathering of the year as one family where Father Alex will Bless and cut the Va-

silopita. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $12 for Children 6-12 years of age, and free for Children 5

years & under.

University of Ottawa Campus Ministry - Fundraising Dinner – January 22nd Please help support a much needed ministry in the Orthodox Church here in Ottawa: Orthodox

Campus Ministry at the University of Ottawa. Many of our Orthodox youth have been touched

by this ministry during a crucial time of transition in their lives. The annual fundraising dinner

will be held on Sunday, January 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Hall of the Assumption of the Virgin

The “Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation Scholarship” - Academic year 2017-2018

The foundation provides two scholarships of $1,000 each to students who have graduated from

High School (Grade 12) in 2016 and entered University as full time students. The application

deadline for this scholarships is February 3rd

, 2017. All recipients must be members of the

Epistle of St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians 2:8-12

My mouth shall speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall bring forth understanding.

Verse: Hear this all you nations.

BRETHREN, see to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty

deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe,

and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily, and

you have come to fulness of life in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In

him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off

the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ; and you were buried with him in

baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God,

who raised him from the dead.

The Gospel Reading: St. Luke 2:20-21, 40-52

At that time, the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they

had heard and seen, as it had been told them. And at the end of eight days, when he

was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was con-

ceived in the womb. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and

the favor of God was upon him. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the

feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to

custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed

behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the com-

pany they went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and ac-

quaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.

After three days, they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to

them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his under-

standing and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his moth-

er said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been

looking for you anxiously." And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did

you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the

saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth,

and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus

increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man.

Simple Thoughts for the New Year

NEW YEAR’S ENCYCLICAL

Certain followers of another religion — that is very much in the news today — are fond of

ridiculing Christianity and Christians. They say such things as: “Are you dumb? Are you a

masochist? Don’t you know any better?”

They go so far as to ridicule the teachings and sayings of Christ Himself, when they say:

“Christians are stupid. You can slap them on the cheek, and they will tell you to keep on hitting

them.”

Of course, you know better. They misinterpret what Jesus said. “If someone strikes you on the

one cheek, then turn to them the other.

With this teaching, Christ preached tolerance; love; cooperation; and humility, while other

religions preach supremacy; hate; revenge; and oppression.

Listen to me. In the New Year that begins, the first thing you need is faith in Christ. Why? Be-

cause in Christ, all the prophecies are fulfilled, for He is the True Messiah. The only True God.

The only Redeemer and Savior of the world. There is no one else who can claim this. True faith

is the link that unites humanity and the divine — a faith that allows each person who is baptized

to be united with Christ the God-Man.

2016 has passed. Imitate your ancestors, the ancient Greeks, who would look back at the events

of the past year and make their resolutions and plans for the New Year. Think about how you

have lived your life and what changes you need to make. What good have you done? What harm

have you done? What should you have done that you did not do? Since the Lord has allowed you

to live through 2016, you still have time and a long journey before you in 2017. Make plans in

2017 for both your spiritual and material benefit. Stick to this plan faithfully, so that by the end

of 2017, you will be successful — if the Lord wills that you are still on this earth.

During the course of this New Year, above all, have faith in Christ, the divine Son of God. Show

genuine love to all people. We are all children of the same Father, who is the Only True God.

Practice these virtues throughout the New Year: industriousness, honesty and kindness.

Do not fear possible threats. Violence can never prevail. Truth will ultimately prevail, for Christ

is the Truth, the Way and the Life — a Life lived in abundance.

With faith in Christ and abiding in His love, you will succeed in this life and inherit life for

eternity. I wish you a happy and blessed New Year, having Christ abiding in your hearts. Christ

has accomplished the true victory over evil in this world, and this victory He grants to each

person who is united with Him for eternity.

Απλές σκέψεις για το νέο έτος

ΕΓΚΥΚΛΙΟΣ ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΑΣ

Είσαι χαζός; Είσαι καρπαζοεισπράκτορας; Δεν το ξέρεις; Έτσι λένε κάποιοι οπαδοί μιας άλλης

θρησκείας.

Να τι λένε: «οι χριστιανοί είναι χαζοί. Τους ριχνεις μια σφαλιάρα και σου λένε, βάρα ακόμη».

Εσύ το ξέρεις. Παρερμηνεύουν αυτό που είπε ο Χριστός. «Αν σε κτυπήσουν στο ένα μάγουλο,

γύρισέ τους και το άλλο».

Με τον τρόπο αυτό ο Χριστός εκήρυξε την ανεκτικότητα. Την αγάπη. Την συνεργασία. Την

ταπεινοφροσύνη, ενώ άλλες θρησκείες κηρύττουν την υπεροχή. Το μίσος. Την εκδίκηση. Την

καταδυνάστευση.

Άκουσέ με. Στο νέο έτος, το πρώτο που χρειάζεσαι είναι η πίστη στο Χριστό. Γιατί; Διότι στο

πρόσωπο του Χριστού επαληθεύτηκαν όλες οι προφητείες και είναι ο Αληθινός Μεσσίας. Ο

Αληθινός Θεός. Ο μόνος Λυτρωτής και Σωτήρας του κόσμου. Δεν υπάρχει άλλος. Η αληθινή

πίστη είναι η ζεύξη του ανθρώπινου με το Θείο.

Το 2016 πέρασε. Μιμήσου τους προγόνους σου. Τους αρχαίους Έλληνες. Κοίταξε πίσω και

σκέψου. Τι καλό έκανες; Τι κακό έκανες; Τι έπρεπε να κάνεις και δεν το έκανες; Στο 2016 δεν

έφυγες για τους ουρανούς. Έχεις ακόμη δρόμο να διανύσεις επί της γης. Προγραμμάτισε το

2017 για το υλικό σου και το πνευματικό σου συμφέρον. Τήρησε το πρόγραμμά σου πιστά,

ώστε στο τέλος του 2017, εάν φθάσεις και είσαι ακόμη επί της γης, να είσαι πετυχημένος.

Κατά την διάρκεια του νέου έτους έχε πίστη στο Χριστό, τον Αληθινό Θεό. Αγάπη στους

ανθρώπους. Είμαστε όλοι παιδιά του ίδιου Πατέρα. Του Αληθινού Θεού. Εργατικότητα.

Τιμιότητα. Καλωσύνη.

Μη φοβάσαι τις απειλές. Δεν θα επικρατήσει η βία. Θα επικρατήσει η αλήθεια και η αλήθεια

είναι ο Χριστός.

Με πίστη στον Χριστό και την αγάπη Του, θα πετύχεις στην παρούσα ζωή και θα κερδίσεις την

αιωνιότητα. Σου εύχομαι ευτυχισμένο και ευλογημένο το νέο έτος, μρ5ε τον Χριστό στην

καρδιά για την αληθινή νίκη.
