The Helm Station is the official publication of the

Manatee Sail & Power Squadron with twelve issues

yearly. Opinions expressed in The Helm Station

are those of the author of the article and do not

necessarily represent the position of The Helm Sta-

tion, MSPS, or USPS. All rights reserved.

Summer is here; the water is

warm and calming down.

17 May 2016 was MSPS’s 19th

anniversary of its founding. We celebrated that day

on 14 May 2016 with a great party at Blu Mangrove

Grille, which was a huge success with friends and the

past commanders present to give a few words of wis-

dom. June is a transition time for MSPS; we say a

heartfelt good bye to our northern friends and wish

them safe travels until their fall return.

Safe Boating week was the end of May, and started

off with a Proclamation from the Mayor of Palmetto.

It continued with a safety booth at the Palmetto

Boat launch where vessel safety checks were com-

pleted along with talks to fellow boaters. Safe Boat-

ing week may be nationally recognized for one week in

May, but I know that all of our MSPS members carry

the safety message throughout the year. This is one

of the activities that make us great.

MSPS ExCom (the Executive Committee) has been

working on some great new additions to help make our

squadron run smoother and more effectively. We

have implemented a Credit Card Processing System

that will allow you to pay for ship store products and

classes. We have also installed a local squadron

phone number that is posted on our web site, in the

Helm Station and on all of our printed handouts. As

of now the Commander answers the number which is

941-799-7370. We are working on some other

changes to the web site and a storage cabinet at the

Elks.

THE US COAST GUARD AUXILIARY – OUR PARTNERS PROMOTING SAFE BOAT-

ING

As we know, the United States Power Squadrons are civic organizations dedicated to promoting boating safety

among their members and the general public, primarily though education and employment of good boating and sea-

manship practices. Also, as we know, the Manatee Sail and Power Squadron does all that and does it having FUN.

This past weekend, at the Regatta Point Boat Ramp, MSPS provided vessel safety inspections and provided safe

boating information to the general public alongside members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The

USCG Auxiliary people that we see sometimes wear military style uniforms and appear to be part of the military,

but they are really civilians just like us. It is a good thing to know a little about whom they are and what they do.

The mission of the Auxiliary is to:

• To promote and improve recreational boating safety,

• To provide a diverse array of specialized skills, trained crews, and capable facilities to

augment the Coast Guard and enhance safety and security of our ports, waterways,

and coastal regions, and,

• To support Coast Guard operational, administrative, and logistical requirements.

In other words, their mission is similar to ours in regard to recreational boating, but, in addition to that, the

USCG Auxiliary provides many services to the USCG.

In 2015 there were approximately 32,000 members of the USCG Auxiliary compared to approximately 42,000

active duty USCG personnel, 8,000 USCG reservists, and 9,000 civilian personnel. The USCG Auxiliary was es-

tablished by Congress as the USCG Reserves on 23 Jun 1939, and it was re-designated the United States Coast

Guard Auxiliary on 19 Feb 1941. Today, the Auxiliary exists to support all USCG missions except roles that re-

quire "direct law enforcement or military engagement.” An interesting historical anecdote is that in the early

stages of WWII, until US Military Forces could be created and employed, the USCG Auxiliary did provide much

of the resources to patrol the coastal waters of the East Coast for German submarines. Coast Guard Auxiliary

vessels actually strapped depth charges to their boats and patrolled the coastal waters of the U.S. for subma-

rines although none of the boats in the USCG Auxiliary fleet did actually sink a single submarine. They did how-

ever rescue several hundred victims of submarine attacks.

Boating is fun .. We'll show you how.

Two thousand and fifteen miles, 2500 gallons of diesel, 17 days, 6 overnight runs, plus a 75-

hour straight run at the end. That is the basic summary of my trip on a 60-foot sportsfisher-

man from Madeira Beach to Freeport Maine. I could add that the water temperature was 43

degrees and the air temperature was 46 on arrival, but I don’t want to appear like a whiner.

I had never run offshore or overnight before, so the trip was an adventure for me. We left at

1800, so that we would arrive at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee at daybreak. The owner likes to run the boat at

about 8 knots to save fuel, so we tended to roll with the swells unless they were right on our nose. My daily schedule

was two to three hours at the helm in daylight plus the 0200 to 0600 shift at night. We always had two people at the

helm at night for safety reasons and to split the driving duties.

Once in the Caloosahatchee we ran to our first overnight marina stop in Moore Haven. This is hardly a bustling com-

munity, but we did find a Fraternal Order of Eagles club where we procured a beer and watched the NHL playoffs.

We left early the next day heading for Ft. Pierce. We ran at 20 knots across Lake Okeechobee, then up the Intra-

coastal Waterway. From Ft. Pierce, we stayed in the Intracoastal, overnighting in Titusville and St. Augustine. The

trip so far was great: calm, sunny and very pleasant. But that was about to change!

We left St. Augustine for a 25-hour run to Charleston as the weather appeared decent and the seas were forecast to

be only 2 to 3 feet. Unfortunately, the seas were twice the prediction, and it was a very rough ride as we rocked

along in a mainly beam/quartering sea. It was virtually impossible to sleep in the bunks or even to sit in the helm seat,

so it was a tired crew that arrived in Charleston. Here we lost one of our group as he had to get home to close on a

boat, and a new arrival was scheduled for the next day. We took advantage of the many fine restaurants and gave our

cook a couple of days off!

We left Charleston for another all-nighter offshore to Morehead City and then on to Belhaven N. C. This trip was

better since the seas were as predicted and we arrived in Belhaven in much better spirits. The next day was an easy

run to Coinjock where the only restaurant featured an excellent prime rib so the cook got yet another break! We

fueled the next day in Chesapeake Virginia; ($1.69) changed the oil in the generator and main engines, and began plan-

ning for being offshore from Cape May to Atlantic City. The weather forecast was appalling with 25 to 30 knot winds

and 9-foot seas so we stayed in the Intracoastal through Norfolk and ran up the Chesapeake to a small town called

Oxford. For some reason the skipper wanted to stay here rather than pushing on to Cape May, so we stayed a day

and a half waiting for a better forecast before starting an overnight run up the Chesapeake, through the C&D Canal

and down the Delaware to Cape May. We anchored in Cape May overnight then left for our last 75-hour leg to Free-

port. The crew was disappointed to miss Atlantic City, but we had lost so much time over the past several days that

we needed to get back on some sort of schedule. We transited New York City at dusk after a rough run up the Jer-

sey coast – the calm water was much appreciated.

People have asked if I’d do the trip again. I can definitely say that I would not run north again that early in the year.

The southbound trip might be interesting, as the promise of warmer weather would be inviting. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll

help bring the boat back this October!

Education Department

At May's Squadron membership meeting, we had a very good response to signing up for fall classes. Seamanship,

Pilot, Advance Pilot, and Electronics Phase II all had a strong class response Because of this, some classes maybe

offered this summer. In that way students will be able to move to the next level of boating skill courses during

the coming year. The sign-up sheets will be posted again at June's membership meeting, so if you missed doing so

last month, please sign up then, as our monthly meetings will be suspended until September. Signing up well in

advance really helps us keep offering courses in their proper sequence. Remember our core courses are in pre-

requisite order. The initial behind your name reflects your educational level, i.e., S - Seamanship, P - Pilot, AP -

Advance Pilot, JN - Junior Navigator, N - Navigator, SN - Senior Navigator (Senior Navigator requires complet-

ing 8 electives in addition to the core courses).

CONGRATUATIONS to the following:

SAIL (taught by Lt Bill Dearstyne JN): Don Tress P, P/Lt/C Robert Gutierrez N, and Lt/C

Bob Kelly N

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS PHASE I (taught by P/C Charlie Brunner SN): Matthew Braatz, Robert F. Goodrich P,

Ted Halloran, Lt Don Hanzlik S, and Lt/C Bob Kelly N.

CONGRATUATIONS AGAIN on an effort worth doing and having fun at the same time!!

We are now in Florida's prime cruising season; enjoy, be safe and set a good example for all around you-- family,

friends, and strangers alike. At least have your PFD's out and visible. Also, think about our Bent Prop Award!!

Significantly, Auxiliarists do not have and cannot be given general police powers or direct law enforcement au-

thority. Coast Guard unit commanders may, however, assign Auxiliarists to missions that support Coast Guard law

enforcement efforts.

In summary, in addition to their other activities, the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are our partners in supporting

safe recreational boating and deserve our support and cooperation.

Boating Quotes

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed

by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw

off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade

winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

~~Mark Twain

“The ocean has always been a salve to my soul...the best thing for a cut

or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of

life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental

abrasions one inevitably acquires on land.”

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES FOR THE FALL OF 2016

Summer brings warm weather and water temperatures, sudden showers and

thunderstorms, the beginning of the tropical storm season, and......and.....the

opportunity for some very pleasant boating. We take a break from General

Membership Meetings in July and August and we will look forward to gather-

ing again in September. Looking forward to the Fall, pencil in on your calen-

dar the following National and District 22 Events:

21-28 Aug 2016~~USPS Governing Board meets in Pittsburgh, PA.

.

30 Sep 2016 -01 Oct 2016~~The District 22 Fall Conference will be held

in Punta Gorda, FL

03-06 Nov 2016~~The District 22 Fall C & R will take place at Palm Island Marina, Cape Haze FL.

A lot of our new members attended these events which is what MSPS is all about. When talking to our new mem-

bers we sometimes use acronyms common to USPS but the news member may not know what the meanings are. I

thought I would post a partial list of them. You will also see these acronyms in articles in the Helm Station:

The acronyms also apply to District and National just a D – Like D/Cdr = District Current Commander D/Lt/C =

District Lieutenant Commander, etc.

JUST FOR GIRLS FISHING

On 29 Apr 2016, Our Squadron hosted twenty-five girls from the Just for Girls School in Palmetto, Florida for a

morning of fishing at the Green Bridge which spans the Manatee River from Bradenton to Palmetto, followed by

lunch at Blackstone Park in Palmetto. This Just for Girls Fishing event is an incentive for scholastic performance

for the students from the Just for Girls School and offers the students a welcome break in the school routine

and a chance to experience a fishing outing with our Squadron Members. The weather cooperated, more so than

the fish, and the lunch was well received.

Many thanks to the squadron members who helped Lt Ed Van Stedum S set up the fishing rigs, baited the hooks,

and provided help with fishing techniques. Many thanks to Steve Petty, R/C Myles Gee SN, Lt Kathy Gee S, P/ C

Larry Beverage JN, Lt Yvonne Beverage P and their team for providing the lunch at Black-

stone Park. A gathering at the YachtSea Grill for appetizers and libations provided a

pleasant ending for another quality community service function by the MSPS.

Led by Alice Brunner P, 9 members and 1 guest enjoyed a sunny kayaking trip on the Tampa Bay, some crossing the

channel to explore Shell Island.

We were blessed to have a close encounter with 4 manatees, surfacing quite near Roger Tyrrell S.

During lunch, we were entertained by 3 dolphins and had an unusual class in proper

knot-tying after our 4 kayaks were retrieved from the currents by Rich Maggio.

Our group also included our newest member, Susan Sherrow S, Lt Lynne Gieges and

Lt Jim Gieges, Lt Carolyn Schmidt S and P/Lt/C Dona Bigham SN.

Thank you to my friend, Pam Roecker, who took these pictures.

May Activities~~continued

National Safe Boating Week was successfully acknowledged by MSPS in May through the supportive efforts of

many. A hardy “thank you” to all who joined in making this a successful outreach to the people of Manatee Coun-

ty and visitors.

On 16 May 2016, the MSPS and the USCG Aux Flotilla 8-5 were presented with a proclamation for National

Safe Boating Week by the Palmetto City Council. Commissioner Jonathan Davis, a boating captain himself, read

and presented the proclamation to P/C King Bernard SN, P/C Charlie Brunner SN, and Commodore Braxton Ezell

and Vice Commodore Jackie Fresta. Fifteen members of MSPS were in attendance for this presentation, and

the photo documenting the event was in the 19 May 2016 publication of the North River News.

On 20 May 2016, MSPS celebrated Ready, Set, Wear It! -- the national promotion to wear your lifejackets. See

our MSPS Facebook page for the photos of many of us documenting how fun and comfortable it is to wear our

lifejackets.

On 21 May 2016, members of MSPS and the USCG Aux Flotilla 8-5 joined forces to provide safe boating infor-

mation and VSI at the Palmetto City Ramp at Regatta Point. Nine of us manned an informational table, provided

assistance to launching boaters by holding lines, and encouraged safe boating practices to individuals and fami-

lies who were intent on enjoying a beautiful day on the water.

The Left Coast Amateur Fishing Report

By Lt Jim Gieges S

May 2016

All systems are go as we head into the lazy days of summer. The

constant wind of spring has let up, water temperatures are in the

slot and bait fish are everywhere. It is easy to know the tarpon are

around; just trying to wade through the numerous tourney boats

from Passage Key up to the shipping channel tells you something is going on. If you enjoy what nature has to of-

fer now is the time to head off Bean Point to view the numerous tarpon in their annual gathering. The local wa-

ters off our beaches are crystal clear so viewing should be great.

So what is available- Just about everything. Kings are hitting bait in deeper water, the three and seven mile

reefs are showing very good results with snapper, grouper, grunts and pompano taking bait. The deeper grass

flats inshore are holding trout and our resident redfish are being targeted by numerous tournaments on our

coast. The south Skyway pier reports good catches of mackerel, snapper and the usual mixed bag of fish. The

cobias, one of my favorites, are a thrill when you find them…....talk about a good fight! If you are just now plan-

ning to make the lobster mini season in the Keys, you may be in for a little sticker shock. Finding a place to rent

is like searching for a needle in a haystack and be prepared to pay top price.

Fishing Regulations Changes- The main thing to remember here is to stay fluid. There are so many changes

(several on 01 Jun 2016) and the knowledge of the FWC has the ability to close seasons when they feel quotas

have been filled help to confuse things. To complicate matters further we need to be aware of state and federal

regulations concerning open & close seasons with offshore rod benders not being spared. Red snapper regulations

with the numerous open/close dates are a thing to behold; having a potato sack race in the middle of I-75 during

rush hour makes more sense. Snook season will open 01 Jun 2016 through 01 Sep 2016, amberjack will have a

shorter season, and gag grouper reopens 01 Jun 2016 through 31 Dec 2016 with a 2 inch(s) size increase. And

that is not all. Check the latest regulations before you leave the dock.

We are headed into our yearly rainy season; stay alert and check weather reports on a constant basis. Now is a

good time to get that MMSI number and wire your GPS into your radio. If you have not yet done so, get your

vessel safety check completed. Call me today and I’ll set you up. (941-920-0035) Be safe, have fun and get on

the water today.

Helmsman: A Helmsman is “one who steers the ship”. The Helm Station is our monthly

newsletter, and is one of the ways we communicate with our members and helps us steer our

organization. It is also one of our largest expenses. To help us defray the cost of publishing

this newsletter, we established the Helmsman Program.

You can become a Helmsman for The Helm Station by contributing $10 in honor of

the month of your birthday. We will publish your name on The Helmsman Page and recognize

your birthday during your birth month. Sign up in January to have your support listed

throughout the year.

If you paid to join the Helmsman Page ($10/year) you are also eligible for a free

classified ad in two consecutive issues. What a deal! Contact the editor to take advantage

A big thank you to our May volunteers!
