Asuka and Ako were born in 2016.These 2 dogs are raised by Odate city and the Akita Dog Protection Society. They take them for a walk and greet passengers at the station (Sat, Sun, public holidays 10am,

1pm for 30 mins). Please come and meet gentle and pampered Asuka and the curious tomboy, Ako.

There is a monument of Loyal Hachi at Odate station, similar to the one you can see at Shibuya station, in Tokyo. The monuments watch over people who use the station. At Shibuya station, Hachi’ s left ear is sagging because he is old but Odate station’ s Hachi has both ears strongly standing up as it depicts him when he was young. You can find a momument of a family of Akita dogs in front of the station and there is a shrine of Hachi on the platform.

As well as Asuka and Ako, you can meet many Akita dogs in Odate. There is a city loop bus called Loyal Hachi. This bus takes you to Omachi shopping arcade in central Odate. In Zerodate Art Centre (ZAC), you can pet the Akita dog, ‘Nono’ . *Check in advance as she may be out for a walk* Tel 050-3332-3819Further on is the head office of the Akita Dog Protection Society. (Akita Inu Kaikan). You can meet real Akita dogs from April to November. Look for Akita dog monuments in Odate city. They are in parks, city facilities and elsewhere.

JR Odate is a JR EAST and JR CARGO station. Opened in 1899 (Meiji Era 32), it has a history of over 110 years. There used to be 4 lines: Ou Main Line, Hanawa Line, Kosaka Line and Hanaoka Line. Those lines were used for passengers and cargo. However, there are only 2 Lines remaining, which are the Ou Main and Hanawa Lines. Both connect to Akita city, Aomori city and Morioka city, which are the main cities of the North East. Odate station and Shibuya station have aligned as sister stations, bonded by Loyal Hachi. As a proof of friendship, they exchanged gifts. Zelkova (From Shibuya to Odate) and weeping cherry blossom trees (From Odate to Shibuya) are planted at each station.

Kosaka railway bookended a 100 year history (1909 – 2009) when it closed in 2009.Kosaka Railway Park opened in June, 2014, using the old Kosaka railway.At the spacious station, you can ride on a handmade, sightseeing torokko train and a rail bike. Adults can operate a diesel train. There is accommodation constructed from an old night train called “Akebono” which used to operate to/from Ueno – Akita – Aomori.

Ishida Rose Garden, Magewappa (Handcraft using Akita cedar) experience workshop and Akita Inu Kaikan etc.It’ s also fun to discover hidden shops and places. This is a great way to get around the city and look for Akita dog monuments and sightseeing spots (This service is not available in winter due to heavy snow).

Kosaka mine recorded the highest profit in Japan in 1907, due to the success of its copper flash smelting furnace. It became one of the top 3 mines alongside Ashio mine in Tochigi and Besshi mine in Ehime.The head of the mine at that time aspired to form an ideal society.Duringthe last years of the Meiji Era (from the early 1900s to 1912), he established the first electricity usage in Akita prefecture, installed water works throughout the town, ran Kosaka Railway and electric railway, oversaw the prefecture’ s general hospital, Tohoku’ s (North-eastern Honshu) grandest playhouse and so on. He equipped Kosaka as an urban centre, thereby putting Kosaka at the leading edge of westernization.

Kosaka mine grew dramatically due to the successful development of black ore copper flash smelting furnace and the first domestic strip mining.Kourakukan opened its entertainment facilities.The first performance was on August 16th, 1910, played by Osaka Kabuki Onoe Shokaku Ichiza.From then on, performances of Kabuki, Shingeki and movies were very popular there but, due to the aging building and the popularity of colour television, it stopped operation in 1970. However, it reopened in 1986, due to the passion of local citizens.You can take a tour of the facility, guided by a Kuroko (a stagehand, dressed in black, who assists the actors in various ways during the performance). You will be able to learn about the history, characteristics, stage settings and dressing rooms.
