I don’t even get
how we the Japanese
agreed to open trade with
the United States. I mean
after years of tradition and
seclusion the United
States don’t just get to
suddenly barge in my
homeland and threaten us
with black ships. Now
we’re left without a ruler
because they had to visit
some place called San
Francisco to negotiate a
treaty with the United
States and it’s congress. I
personally think that
something bad is going to
happen to our lords but all
my friends don’t tend to
think so. I just wish the
Americans would just
leave my country and
bring my people back
safely. I think the Ameri-
cans are so strange with all
their guns and their west-
ern crap I mean all their
stuff is so different they
don’t believe in tradition
or anything important they
must have no honor with
all their advanced mecha-
nisms.
But I don’t really
think the Americans are all
that bad but they just need to not be
uncivilized and invade another
country just to learn about all our
traditions and rich materials. Then I
heard a few days ago that our rulers
arrived in San Francisco on one of
their fancy ships called the USS
Powhaten. Even though they almost
died because of some tempest winds
somehow they managed to survive
the long perilous journey to the other
land. Now the San Francisco people are
treating our shogun with good hospital-
ity. I guess I was wrong to judge them
so badly but they still should’ve taken a
more friendly way to get us to trade with
them because they were about to risk
war with us.

The Open Door Policy We had the closed door
policy for over two centuries, but the
Americans threaten us to opened our
doors and signing the Treaty of Kana-
gawa with us. The Treaty of Kana-
gawa was a treaty that allowed the
Americans to use two of the ports for
trading. We, the Japanese, had only
trade with China and some Dutch
during the time when we had the
closed door policy, but maybe open-
ing our doors to the world can be
something that will change our coun-
try's future.
On March 31, 1854, we
signed the Treaty of Kanagawa with
the United States and started to open
our doors to the world. After opening
our doors to the world, we receive
most of the benefit from trading with
other countries. After trading with the
United States, other countries, like
Britain and Russia started
trading with us too.
During the closed door
policy, we traded with the Chinese
and Dutch, we adopted some of
their inventions. For example, the
Chinese writing system, the struc-
ture of their buildings, and the
knowledge in fields ranging from
medicine to painting from the
Dutch. During those trades, we
were having control of all of the
trades.
Trading with the United
States was the beginning of mod-
ernizing our
country. We
started to adapt
more ideas
from different
countries to
build us a
stronger country.
Some ideas we adapt were
the constitution and military
system from Germany, pub-
lic school from the Ameri-
cans, and a naval system
from Britain. Maybe the
open door policy will help
our country become one of
the most powerful countries
in the world.
