Once upon a time in the Baltic Sea therelived a beautiful mermaid .

Ta pół ryba, pół kobieta …

This half-fish, half-woman…

… postanowiła popłynąć rzeką Wisłą…

…decided to swim the river Vistula…

z portu, który znajduje się w Gdańsku…

from the port of Gdańsk…

… aż do źródła Wisły w Polskich górach Tatrach.

… to the source of the Vistula riverwhich is situated in the Polish Tatra mountains.

Na szczęście dla naszej historii, syrena postanowiła odpocząć na piaszczystym brzegu, gdzie dziś znajduje się warszawskie Stare Miasto. Tak pokochała to miejsce, że zdecydowała się zostać dłużej.

Fortunately for our story, the mermaid decided to slightlyrelax on a sandy bank on the foot of what is todayWarsaw's Old Town.She loved the place so much that she chose to stay here.

Wkrótce rybacy z pobliskiej wioski zauważyli, że ktoś wypuszcza im ryby z sieci.

Soon though, fishermen living in the nearby villagenoticed that someone was letting the fish out of their nets.

Zezłoszczeni, zdecydowali się złapać winnegoi srodze go ukarać.

Getting angry, they decided to capture the offenderand punish him.

Nie spodziewali się, że okaże się to syrena.

They didn't expect to find the mermaid.

Jednakże, gdy tylko usłyszeli jej przepiękny głos …

However, as soon as they heard her beautiful voice…

… obiecali, że nigdy jej nie skrzywdzą.

Wkrótce syrena wypełniała każdy wieczór swoim pięknym śpiewem …

Ale pewnego dnia bogaty kupiec przechodził wzdłuż brzegu Wisły i zobaczył syrenkę.

But one day, a rich merchant was walkingby the Vistula river and noticed the mermaid.

Wpadł na świetny pomysł, aby schwytać syrenkę i zarobić na niej dużo pieniędzy pokazując ją innym na jarmarku.

He had a great idea to capture the mermaid and make a lot of money from showing her off at a fair.

Porwał syrenkę i uwięził ją w drewnianej szopie.

He trapped the mermaidand imprisoned her in a wooden shed.

Jej płacze i wołanie o pomoc usłyszał młody rybak. Z pomocą przyjaciół uwolnili ją.

Her cries for help were so loud that soona young fisherman heard her.With the help of friends they set her free.

Syrenka wdzięczna za pomoc obiecała bronićich wioski, która później rozrosła się w naszą ukochaną stolicę - Warszawę.

The mermaid, grateful for their help, promised to defend them and their village, which would latergrow into our beloved capital city - Warsaw.

Od tego momentu syrenka uzbrojonaw miecz i tarczę broni miasta i jego mieszkańców.

Since then, the mermaid, armed withthe sword and the shield, protects the cityand its inhabitants.

Dzisiaj Warszawską Syrenkę można spotkać w całym mieście: począwszy od rzeźby na Starym Mieście, do syrenki w herbie miasta.

Today the Warsaw Mermaid can be seen all over the city, from the statue in the Old Town to the city's coat of arms.
