Literacy

• Learning to read is both one of the most important things a child can do and one of the most complicated.– Learning to read builds new pathways in the brain and

helps brain development.– The most important thing that a parent or caregiver

can do to help a very young child get ready to read is to hold the child and read to him or her (So parents need to be readers, too).

read to are much more successful than those who lack that background.

What about libraries?

Research shows us that having reading materials nearby is one of the most important factors in helping children learn to read.

Libraries put books and other reading materials into the hands of children and their families.
