THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
DISCERNMENT
To discern is to be able to grasp and comprehend the
obscure, to perceive, to paraphrase Merriam-Webster
online. Your younger person today may talk about be-
ing “woke up.” During Lent we are invited to self-
examination. Discernment is often prompted by a sense
of being called by God to service, to ministry, to some
sort of discipline, or to renewal.
In Lent, we are invited to examine where we are. Our
Vestry is beginning a year long process to review our
Vision and Mission and adopt new goals. We are invit-
ed into a slowness of discernment to answer the ques-
tions of the Parish’s call to service.
In both the action of the individual in discernment, and
the Parish in discernment, your time is the most valua-
ble gift. I pray that you will make the time and put in
the effort to discern how we, St Luke’s ~ San Lucas, will
respond to Gods call for the next phase of our life as a
Christian Community.

“woke up” o despierto. Durante Cua-
resma estamos invitados a auto-
estamos.

sonas alojó a 23 mujeres.
Me encantan
esas cosas.
calle Fourth Plain Blvd.

REPORTE DEL TESORERO Resumen De Presupuesto: “dólares y centavos”
4 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
bergue de mujeres WHAT. Hemos recibido fondos

Oriente Medio.

ESCUELA DOMINICAL Ya hemos comenzado nuestras maravillosas enseñan-

Hable on P.
Jaime.

san Valentín para las mujeres que residen en albergue;
miembros Mary Ellen Sandberg y Ellen Hiromura hi-

Las do-
Gracias.

VESTRY SUMMARY – FEBRUARY 2018 The February Vestry meeting took place on February
24 as part of the annual Vestry Retreat.
WHAT Shelter: Our parish’s responsibility is to be
good landlords: SHARE’s responsibility is to fund-
raise. Due to turnover in the winter of 2016-17, our 12-
person shelter housed 23 women. Now, 80% of them
are in permanent housing. Some of this year’s 18 wom-
en have also successfully transitioned from the shelter.
The new bathroom, with a shower, is in use. Part of
the $10,000 community grant was used for cleanup af-
ter the basement flooding and for purchasing an addi-
tional washer and dryer for the laundry room.
Immigration: The Diocese provided assistance for bail
for two Hispanic parishioners. They are at home with
their families awaiting resolution of their cases.
Committees: Parish committees created or renewed for
2018, with their missions, are listed elsewhere in this
issue of The Messenger.

JUNIOR WARDEN REPORT It’s the start of a new year as your Junior Warden. The
last year has been busy and very fulfilling and I don’t
expect 2018 to be any different. There will be many
new challenges, leaks to plug and toilets to unplug,
plants to plant and appliances to fix. I love this stuff.
Work supporting the WHAT shelter has consumed
much of my time over the last month. Our laundry
room appliances were in sad need of replacement.
One washer didn’t wash and the other leaked. One
dryer had no heat and the other’s door wouldn’t stay
closed. All four units were over 25 years old and were
used by the WHAT shelter’s women every night. In
preparation for their replacement we painted the
walls, replaced the flooring, installed a new natural gas
line and 120V power circuit and new dryer vent ducts.
We are now virtually complete with the upgrades in
this corner of the basement which includes the laundry
room and shower room. Next up: the other basement
bathrooms.
Work continues on a replacement of our sign on
Fourth Plain Blvd. A committee has been reviewing
proposals and we are close to a final design. Expect to
see a bright new sign later this spring!

TREASURER’S REPORT BUDGET SUMMARY
“Dollars and Sense”
At the end of January we expect percentages to be at 8.3%
of budgeted revenue and expense.
Summary as of January 31, 2018
• Revenues: January revenues are greater than an-
ticipated which is a very good thing.
• Expenses: Expenses are just slightly over year-to-
date budget projections. Expenses are averaged
over all twelve months, so a slight difference is not
problematic when the whole year is averaged out.
Additional Comments: Thank you for your early
pledge contributions. With greater amounts of money
received weekly, we hope to contribute over $23,500
to outreach activities this year which includes $7,500
for the rector to support families and individuals in
need through his discretionary account. The rector’s
discretionary account is wholly dependent upon
monthly donations from church members, so please
give extra for this valuable ministry.
We will also be able to begin financially supporting
The Reverend Dennis Cole for all the pastoral care and
other activities he supports throughout the year. Be-
cause the church is growing and is now a “B” parish,
the rector will receive upgraded compensation and it
should be noted parenthetically, our rector voluntarily
declined the “B” parish additional salary last year as a
gesture to provide more funding for our ministries!
Additionally, this budget will allow for continued fa-
cility updates for the WHAT Women’s Shelter. New
and unanticipated funds have been received in the
amount of $10,000 from the Ed and Dollie Lynch en-
dowment through the Community Foundation, and
these funds are specifically intended for WHAT needs
as determined by the WHAT committee and SHARE.
Please note that the 2018 budget is, in part, supported
by one-time-only carryover funds, which will need to
be addressed through long-term budget planning and
additional financial support as we enter 2019.
Thanks for your continued financial support of
St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas.

STAFF CHANGES We are sad to report that Erika Carranza, our Parish
Administrator, resigned.. We are beginning the search
process for a replacement. With the additional task of
replacing Erika, we are asking for Office Angels to
help with answering phones and doing light tasks so
that Fr. Jaime and Kris Lawless can focus on working
and preparing for a new hire. Please see the sign up
sheet in the Narthex or contact the parish office.
SUNDAY TOPICS
KNOW YOUR PRAYER BOOK Bishop Greg Rickel always selects a book for the Dio-
cese during Lent. Here at SL2 the best kept secret is
the Book of Common Prayer that resides in our pews.
Although disparaged because of its date of publication
(1979), it is still a brilliant liturgical and devotional
step forward for the Episcopal Church. Throughout
Lent, and continuing through March 18, we will offer
a Lenten series of talks each Sundays following the
10AM service in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit
(Children’s Chapel). Unearth the treasures of the BCP.
The Rev. Jaime Case, Rector
LIBRARY DISPLAY OF THE BOOK OF

The SL2 Library will be open during the Coffee Hour
after the 10AM service: Come see the excellent display
of prayer books from around the world, and pick up a

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays during Lent and Holy Week at 12:15 PM we
will offer prayers of the Stations of the Cross. Often
this is lay led. If the occasion permits, we will do it
bilingually.
EASTER FLOWERS We will have lots of special flowers ordered for Easter
Sunday. We ask your help to fund these special
plants. Any amount you give is appreciated, as a me-
morial if you wish. The flower offering envelopes will
be in the Narthex starting March 11-25. Please print
your name and the name(s) of loved ones you wish
remembered. A phone number would be helpful in
case we have any questions.
PALM CROSS MAKING The Altar Guild invites one and all to our Annual
Palm Cross Making. It will be in the Parish Hall on
Saturday, March 24 at 10:00 AM. Questions? Please
call Carol Hiltz or Sandra Kimura.
THE GREAT LITANY CHANT
AND PROCESSION Wednesday of Holy Week (Mar 28) 12:15: In place of
the midweek service on Wednesday March 28 we will
chant in procession the Great Litany. See your BCP,
pp. 148ff.
AGAPÉ MEAL - MAUNDY THURSDAY Join us on March 29 at 6:00 PM. This meal will be
meatless, the setting austere and the food sparse and
simple. Appropriate foods include (meatless) soup,
cheese, olives, dried fruit, bread and wine. Please add
your name to sign-up in the Narthex if you are com-
ing, and if you can bring a portion of the meal. Also
there’s a place to sign-up for set-up and clean-up. We
request food donations for our Outreach pantry to
feed the hungry. After the Agapé Meal we move to
the church for a bilingual service of Holy Eucharist, at
7:00 PM.
GOOD FRIDAY OFFERING – March 30 Good Friday Offering reaches back to 1922 when The
Episcopal Church sought to create new relationships
with and among the Christians of the Middle East.
Through the years the generous donations of Episco-
palians help the Christian presence in the Land of the
Holy One to be a vital and effective force for peace
and understanding among all of God’s children. All
donations received on Good Friday will go to support
the Christians of the Middle East.
WORSHIP RELATED MINISTRIES: All worship related ministries are invited to a refresh-
er meeting on Saturday, March 24 at 10 am. Lectors,
Chalice Bearers, Acolytes, Altar Guild, Ushers and
Greeters are all invited. That day is the Saturday be-
fore Holy Week, and presents us an opportunity to
review the extra services and adjust any tasks before
the week begins!
NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM As the saying goes, “March comes in like a lion and
goes out like a lamb.” The Gospel for the first Sunday
in March finds Christ thrashing his way through the
temple like a lion and the final Passion Sunday on
March 25th brings the lamb to the slaugh-
ter. Musically, Lent is a very subdued time. There are
no Bach Lenten Cantatas. We are bidding our time
until Easter arrives with trumpets blaring. Oddly
enough this year, Ash Wednesday fell on Valentine’s
Day and Easter falls on April Fools.
We do have special music every Sunday, including
Palm/Passion Sunday and bilingual services on Maun-
dy Thursday and at the Easter Vigil on the final even-
ing of March. Many of our choir members will be
singing Bach's St. John Passion again at 7 PM on Good
Friday at St. James Lutheran. St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas
has spoken services at noon and 7 PM on March
30th. Jazz Vespers returns on April 7th with music at
6 PM by trombone specialist John Moak with jazz all-
star Mike Horsfall at the piano.
And if March means “March Madness” to you and
college basketball, try out “Lenten Madness,” a cele-
bration of the saints of the church in a friendly bracket
format. Past champions who have worn the “golden
halo” have included Florence Nightingale (2017), Die-
trich Bonhoeffer (2016), and Francis of Assisi (2015.).

a family member, please complete a Baptism infor-
mation form found in the Narthex and contact the

SUNDAY SCHOOL We have already began our wonderful teachings and
stories for Lent. In February we began with our story
on the cross and then continued on to the many faces
of Easter. We will complete the series of the many fac-
es of Easter and end with our story on the Easter Egg.
We have come to that time again where we get ready
for our wonderful Easter Egg event. We will need can-
dy ( no nuts) and plastic eggs. Any and all donations
are greatly appreciated as we always have an amazing
turnout. We are also asking for volunteers to help hide
the eggs and organize the children. With so many
participants each year, the more help the better!
If you have any questions, please contact Herlinda or
Lee Wilson.

WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP All women are welcome to join us for our March
monthly session on Saturday, March 10 when we will
gather from 10AM to 12PM. This will be a time to
come together and expand our spiritual experiences
with a feminine view. Each Saturday session begins
with refreshments and friendly conversation then we
will begin our study and discussion based on the
book, The Heartbeat of God – Finding the Sacred in the
Middle of Everything” by Katherine Jefferts Schori, for-
mer Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The
pre-March reading assignment is found in Part IV,
Who Is Jesus in the World Today?, Finding Our Way
Home, Stardust and The Dream of God.
As part of taking action to help those in the margins of
our society, we are requesting donations of a feminine
sanitary products to donate to the Outreach Ministry.
These will help the women who are homeless or low
income.
Remember that we enter the church building at the
north entrance, through the kitchen. This door will be
un-locked from 9:50 – 10:10AM for our safety. Hoping
you will join us! If you have any questions please con-
tact one of the conveners:

SPANISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE: IDIAM (Instituto de Español de la Iglesia Anglicana de
México = “Spanish institute of the Anglican Church of
Mexico”). It is located in Cuernavaca, capitol of Mexi-
co’s Morelos state. It is sponsored by the Anglican Dio-
cese of Cuernavaca, and held in their diocesan com-
pound. Father Jaime started the Instituto in 2003. It is a
total-immersion course in Spanish culture, language,
dance, and cuisine. The 2018, dates are
August 4- 18. The program is limited to 18 persons, at
$1,800 each. Stu and Catherine Hennessey took part in
the Instituto last year. They liked it well enough to re-
turn this year, Lizzy will join them.
The Rev. Jaime Case, Rector
THE WIDOW’S MITE Back in the 1980s, during the period of Rev. Ed Rankin
serving as our rector, he received or obtained a gift of
a plaque. The plaque contained two small coins, a
quote from Mark (12:41 – 44), and an authentication
document and seal. The story is the Widow’s Mite, in
which Jesus is in the Temple, observing the contribu-
tions by the rich to the Temple. He notices a widow
approaching. She takes out two ‘mites’ and puts them
into the Temple coffers.
The two coins in the plaque are small, as are mites
from the days of Jesus, and perhaps made of copper, of
which mites were made. Actually, the ‘mites’ are
Greek lepta (singular lepton). It was the lowest value
coin in the realm of Rome, which included Jerusalem.
The term ‘mite’ did not come in until the King James
Version of the Bible was published, but that is just
translation trivia.
Luke, our parish’s patron saint, told this story as
“Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts
into the offering box. He also saw a poor widow put in
two small copper coins. He said, “I tell you the truth,
this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For
they all offered their gifts out of their wealth. But she,
out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live
on.”
Another similar coin in circulation at the same time as
the Roman lepton was the Jewish prutah, a copper
coin that was the lowest Hebrew value (its Hebrew
translation). One prutah was worth two lepta, and
could purchase a loaf of bread in Jerusalem. So it is
likely, since the story speaks of two coins, that these
were lepta, or later-called mites. However you can see
the meaning of such an offering to a poor widow, giv-
ing away her ability to purchase bread for herself and
perhaps her family.
You will find this plaque in the Parish Hall, near the
west exit and Fr. Jaime’s office exit. Take a look at it.

WHAT MINISTRY One of my favorite songs in one of my favorite musi-
cals is “All Good Gifts” in the musical Godspell. The
chorus begins, “All good gifts around us...”
Recently one of the members of the WHAT Ministry,
Diane Epherson, made mini Oreo cheesecakes and
beautiful spa washcloths as Valentine gifts for our
women’s shelter residents; truly gifts of the heart. “…
Are sent from Heaven above, so thank the Lord, oh thank
the Lord for all his love…”
The Helping Hands Ministry which Mary Ellen Sand-
berg and Ellen Hiromura are members made 10 gor-
geous quilts to be given to the shelter women when
they exit to their new homes. These quilts are made
from donated batting and fabric. Another lovely ges-
ture of love to our residents! “ We thank thee then, O
Father, for all things bright and good, the seedtime and the
harvest, our life our health our food…”
Our congregation is filled with talented, giving peo-
ple waiting for that touch on the shoulder that this is
the time, that this is the place, this is the moment to
step up to make a difference in someone’s day with
your gift of time or talent. Which is why this song res-
onates in my mind, heart, and, soul this lent season:
“All good gifts around us, are sent from heaven above, so
thank the Lord, oh thank the lord for all his love…. I really
wanna thank you Lord!”
If you feel called to share your gift of time, talent, or
treasure with the WHAT Ministry please contact Deb
Stavig [email protected]
WHAT MINISTRY – REQUEST Our women's shelter (WHAT) has been a life raft for
many of the occupants in our basement. Our WHAT
Ministry's mission is to not only provide shelter but
also to support these vulnerable and homeless wom-
en. In this vein, occasionally, one of the residents may
have unique needs which can not be met by the pro-
gram. If you would like to be part of an email group
notifying you of those needs, please contact Deb
Stavig - [email protected]. Additionally, Share
would like residents to be able to check out lap tops to
look for jobs, emails, etc. They are looking for two
used lap tops, chromebooks or tablets with keyboards.
Contact Deb Stavig if you can donate!
FOOD ASSISTANCE
NEEDS ASSISTANCE St James wrote: "... and you say, 'Good-bye and have a
good day; stay warm and eat well'-- but then you
don't give that person any food or clothing. What
good does that do?"
Our parish provides food four mornings per week for
people who come in hungry. Yet donations to our Pie
Room are not keeping up. Imagine if every person
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 15
who comes for Eucharist each week brought ten food
items. We'd have around 1500 items to distribute dur-
ing the following week. When we grocery shop, the
little collapsible shelf on the cart could be for outreach.
What a cool ritual that would be --- an extension of the
hospitality of The Table. Thank you.

THE LITTLEST W.H.O. VOLUNTEER She volunteered once last year and met a
gentleman who does chalk art. He loved
teaching her and Maddox about the me-
dium and shared some of his own story
with me. She remembered him and won-
dered if he would be there. He was and
as soon as he walked in and saw her he smiled big and
said, “ I remember you. I’m gonna make you a pic-
ture.” It was sweet. And another man hung out and
tried to help with her homework but realized he did
not remember learning about prepositions and told us
he’d learned new things with us. So Wednesday I’ve
asked her teacher to send an extra packet for him. She
can play teacher and I will be tutor and share some
more knowledge.

home to be laundered. Please check if you have any of
