Presidents Message This is the second month of the year with a number of well organised and attended events. It is really wonderful to see the different activities going on in the club. These activities can only be realized by dedication of the sections and the members who run them. This is reflected in the quality of the events. I have to mention the last event of the month which made a return to the club after a long absence. It was the Orange ball. The event had to change location and this was organized in a very short time. The section and the club office worked together to make it a success. It was a wonderful event and I would like to congratulate the Holland committee for their hard work and acknowledge the support given by the front office and the accounts section for the support. HSE & Security I really want the help of the membership on this subject. This is our club. We should all be able to enjoy it as a safe and respectful environment. The club management has tried a number of things to help focus on HSE

and Security. We have put up signs and distributed leaflets and yet members chose not to comply or worse ignore the simple rules, such as bringing alcohol from outside the club. Not only is this against the club rules but also against Omani Laws and club permits. On the beach, we have made provisions to install warning flags. This should help in warning the members about the sea condition. However, it is the responsibility of the members to follow and adhere to the signs. The other important thing I would like to stress is safety is the responsibility of all, members and their guests. The club is a place to relax and enjoy, the management of the club takes all the efforts to create a safe environment. Over all we, as club management, are trying to improve all the aspects of HSE. However, we expect compliance from the members. We cannot convert this club, which is a place to enjoy and relax into a place where the members are policed all the time. Please follow the rules; these are made to ensure that everyone enjoys the club and what it has to offer. In addition, the club has developed a waiver to ensure clarity on potential incidents arising from sports or other activities. This waiver will apply to all members. Please see the waiver form for your information. Waiver Form Ras Al Hamra Club The other interesting annual dinner I attended was that of the diving section. During the dinner, there was a slide show running and then a few videos were shown. These were really worth sharing. I would like to share them with the general membership via the link. For more information contact the dive section. (http://diving.pdorc.com/gallery) https://www.facebook.com/RAHSAC. The other busy section is as usual the tennis section. It is really busy. I see that via the emails the section sends out to the general membership. This is a practice that I would like all the sections to follow. I know all the sections have their signed members and they share all the news of the different events among them. Please follow the example of the tennis section and send out an email to the general membership informing them of the activities at least once a month and inform them of special events. I know there is the section website and all the news is there but I would like to the sections to take this extra effort to send it to all the membership via the front office. The other exciting news that I would like to share is about the two new sections, well really one new section and revival of an old section. The new section is formed by the Pakistani community and finally I found some members of the Indian community to revive the once vibrant Indian section. This section gave us glimpses of the different cultures and culinary taste of the different regions of India. The glamour of the famous Bollywood and incredible fashion shows. There are many other sections and events that are held in the club with the help of the different sections. Please keep the activities going and if there is anything that I can do please let me know via my email as well as the front office. The maintenance team brought a new team member and it has made a difference. Most of the outstanding work has now been taken care of or is under progress. In this regard I would like the members to report anything broken to the front office. This will help us to take care of it quickly. We also had a newcomers and goers party. This was attended by a number of new comers and was well received. Another newcomers & goers get-together will take place shortly. I would like the new comers who attended the event to please give a feedback before the next event on things we should improve. This will be valuable as they would have gone through the settling process and highlight what we may have missed. There will also be a annual event to engage all the members of the club with different sections putting up stalls to show the activities. RAH Recreation Club Development Engagement Work on the RAH Development Project is going on. The project team organises engagement sessions. Please attend them for the updates. The golf course is looking nice with parts of the fairways with grass. It will look fantastic after it is completed. For more information on what is going on at the club, please visit the club website at: www.pdorc.com and any comments or feedback can be posted to [email protected]. Enjoy the rest of the cool weather and remember to give your help and support to make RAH a better place for our friends and families. Khalid Jawad Al Khabouri. President

PDO Gavel Club Launched

18th Jan 2014 was a Red Letter day in the history of PDO Toastmasters. They successfully launched the PDO Gavel Club. This is a great platform for Children aged between 11 and 17 to develop into excellent leaders and communicators. The Launch was attended by more than 40 interested children and their parents. A demo meeting was arranged by other Gavel Clubs in Oman. Though globally Gavel clubs have limited access to the Toastmasters area and district speech contests. However, PDO Toastmasters shall provide opportunities for PDO Gavel Club members to have regular contests with other Gavel Clubs in Oman. Since then, the Club has held two more meetings on 29th January and 12th Feb 2014. The Club continues its meetings every alternate Wednesday in RAHRC at 17.00 hrs. The next meeting is now planned at 17.00 hrs in Marlin Hall, RAHRC on 26th Feb 2014.

How does the PDO Gavel Club help and how does it operate?

The PDO Gavel Club is being run on the Toastmasters programme with the support of PDO Toastmasters Club. It provides a conducive and friendly environment where members develop their Public Speaking and leadership skills.

The PDO Gavel Club operates in the same way ordinary Toastmasters clubs do. It uses same club officer titles, uses the same communication track manuals and follow similar club meeting protocols. Gavel club members are not, however, referred to as Toastmasters; they are called “Gaveliers”.

Membership: Initial registration has already been completed. More than 40 children are members. If still interested you can be in touch with Vibhas Mangla ([email protected]) or Samiha al Ghafri ([email protected]). [We have two Toastmaster Clubs in PDO which focus on improving leadership and communication skills amongst their members. These clubs focus on PDO employees or their spouses who want to improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. (More details can be found at www.toastmasters.org). If you are interested, you can even visit PDO Toastmaster Club meetings as a guest to get an idea of what is involved.]

RAHADS Section

Following the success of the pantomime ‘Cinderella’ in December 2013, the RAHADS committee has agreed on the next production – ‘Bedroom Farce’ by Alan Ayckbourn which will take place on 2nd – 4th April 2014 in the Cinema Hall. Auditions were held on the 2nd February and the cast of four couples will include Julian Masters, Rosie Reddy, Geoff Murray, Hanneke Hollak, Hussein Al-Noumani, Hanne Efkind, Levent Orsal and Jamie McLean. Directed by Brian Greenhalgh. The play is set in three bedrooms during one Saturday evening when one of the couples is hosting a housewarming party which, unsurprisingly, does not go according to plan. The fourth couple move from house to house generally creating havoc wherever they go. This is a light-hearted comedy and although the action takes place in various bedrooms, neither the script not the action contain inappropriate content. The RAHADS beach BBQ was on Saturday 8th February when we all celebrated the success of Cinderella and welcomed several new members. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to RAHADS this season and if you are interested in helping out, either on stage, back stage, technical (sound & lights) or Front of House, please let Camilla know on [email protected] . Everyone welcome. Finally, our Chairman Mike Turberville continues to make steady progress in hospital in UK recovering from his serious illness. We look forward to welcoming Mike and Kay back to Muscat as soon as possible.

RAHGC – golf section round up – Jan & Feb 2014 News: Interim playing arrangement at Ghala Valley Golf Club After 2 years of playing our social and competitive golf at Muscat Hills, January saw us change host clubs as we switched to Ghala Valley for the remaining months until our own RAHGC golf course and clubhouse open. We would like to thank Muscat Hills for their kind hospitality and also look forward to continuing our events at Ghala Valley, as we make our way home! If you would like to know more about RAH golf section and/or about the club’s activities then please contact Ray Prescott via email [email protected] Update on our course redevelopment The Ras Al Hamra Golf Course is currently being redeveloped into a 9 hole floodlit course, which can be played as 18 holes by utlising 15 different green complexes. There is also a full length floodlit driving range as well as a chipping and putting area to improve your short game.

The course is designed to cater for all levels of golfers, from beginners up to and including scratch players, and become the only fully floodlit course in Oman, enabling members to play rounds of night golf. The new course will be complemented with new clubhouse facilities and a pro-shop.

The chosen turf grass is TE platinum, a hybrid of seashore paspalum, this is highly durable and sustainable grass well suited to Oman's climate and also allows use of recycled and treated water to manage it. Many trees have been preserved from RAH redevelopment project which are to be replanted throughout the 14 hectares of specially designed golf landscape.

Progress to date... • Construction work on the course is ongoing with currently more than 100 workers on

site, to date we have completed 75% of construction with remaining works to be complete by late march.

• Grass has established well on hole 3, with next batch of grass sprigs to be delivered end of February for holes 2,3 (remaining green complexes), 4, 5, 6 which will be roughly 50% of the golf course

• Also, installation of the irrigation water tank is complete and pump station is running, the maintenance shed is going up, cart paths are being constructed, and the lake between 7th and 9th greens has been dug out

Joint RAHGC and Ghala fun competition - Friday 24th Jan

This 9 hole fun competition was held as a joint event for all RAHGC and Ghala Valley members. The format was stableford, but with an additonal play-off between the highest scoring lady and man from each club – this final hole was played head-to-head on the 18th to determine which player and club claimed top spot. The top men from each club were David Oliphant for RAHGC with 22 points, and Rajesh with 23 points for Ghala. For the ladies, it was Susan Oliphant with 22 points and Jackie with 23 points from Ghala. The 18th was then played by these 4 players to decide the club winner in front of a clubhouse gallery consisting of the participants, each cheering on their team. In the ladies shootout Susan shot a 7 and Jackie managed a 5, but with Susan receiving 2 strokes on handicap their match was squared. In the men's it was a bit more tense, with both men scoring gross par net birdies to half the hole and with daylight fading the men were asked to play on to the 18th again over the water from about 100 yards. David put his shot on the green to about 20ft but unfortunately the Rajesh put his ball in the water and then upon re-trying also put his second shot in the water. David holed out in 2 putts to win the hole and the club match for RAHGC. Congratulations to Dave on a great win for RAHGC and for keeping his cool in front of the cheering gallery! Nawras Men's and Ladies A&E Monthly Medals – Sat 1st Feb

Upcoming events: RAHGC Club Championships – 28th Feb & 1st March

This year’s 36 hole Strokeplay event will be played over 2 rounds at Ghala Valley, and determine who will be crowned the 2014 RAHGC Ladies and Men’s Club Champions. This event is open to all members with a valid OGC handicap.

41st MUSCAT OPEN – 7th & 8th March

This is RAHGC’s flagship event that has traditionally attracted the best golfers in the Sultanate and also prominent golfers from other Gulf countries.

This year, for the first time, the competition will be spread across two venues. The first day will be played at Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club and the second at Ghala Valley Golf Club... as we make our way home... to the redeveloped RAHGC golf course which is expected to open mid 2014. RAHGC is grateful for the support of both Muscat Hills and Ghala Valley to enable us to continue with our blue ribbon event, and too of course to the sponsors, who without their generosity, this event could not be possible. Namely; GAC; Sulzer Pumps; Gommer bv; Special Oilfield Services (SOS); Aggreko; Etihad; Amouage; and Imagine Technologies.

Several prizes are up for grabs, including total gross and nett scores, as well as daily prizes to recognise golfing skills. And of course there is coveted trophy for the best gross amateur who is crowned Muscat Open Champion.

The weather may have stopped us diving a few times in the last month but we have still been busy….Our Annual Dive Dinner was held on 5th February in the Sohar Gardens, a fun night was had by all.

Ocean Diver Course Start up: 18 trainee divers took to the water of the pool on 12th February to complete the swim test and see if they were ready to learn to dive. We look forward to starting the Ocean Diver training in next few weeks.

Sports Diver and Dive Leader Trainees: training for more experienced divers continues whenever we go out diving with our instructors being kept busy at all times.

AGM coming up: 9th April at 7pm (venue to be confirmed)

Recent Dive reports: waves and rough weather have made launching the boat impossible on some occasions recently but we have still been getting out diving as much as possible. . See our recent dive reports: 13th December: Lovely day of diving today at

BK. One of those days where the tide meant we had to stay out until at least 3pm to be able to recover the boat. So a late,

relaxed start. Sea was lovely and calm 8 of us went to dive the wreck, some of the best viz on the wreck for a very long

time, and someone has very kindly put a new mooring line on it. Lots of fish seen and all enjoyed their dive. For the

second dive we moved to Mermaid, Katherine enjoyed being an Ocean Diver for Peter to lead as part of his dive leader

training. We returned via the marina, stopping for petrol and easily recovered the boat. Great team effort with unloading

and cleaning up, thanks team

18th January: We had a very productive day of training today...... We took the boat, RN, to Fahal and completed a

dive in Ray Bay and a dive on Hamburger. Even though the sea had been quite rough yesterday the visibility was good

the water temperature was around 23 degrees, so there was some fighting for the sunny spot on the boat in order to

warm up afterwards. Turtles, rays, moray eels and pretty reef fish all observed.

11 divers completed 22 dives. 2 sports diver practical lessons were completed and 6 dive leader practical lessons. Thank

you to all involved and especially the marshal Evert and the instructors (Alan H, Louis and Katherine).... as a club we all

work together in order to help each other to become better divers.

Excellent start by Captain Suleiman and Ghassan Al hajri

The first round of ‘The 2014 Angler of the Year PDO Recreation Club’ competition was held Saturday, 25th of January 2014. This competition was generously sponsored by MODUS Oman Drilling System LLC.

Finally the weather settled down. Early January 2014 High waves and strong winds calmed down and the sea finally welcomed the anglers with its calmness and vitality, the wind was reassuring and smooth, it did not exceed 5 knots. This was an excellent day for Oman Anglers fishing tournament.

A total of 17 eager fishermen joined the event in eight fishing boats. Four anglers in one boat joined in from Bandar Al Roudha, 7 other boats joined in from the Ras Al Hamra recreation centre hoping for the daily prizes and the end of year “Fisherman of the year title”.

As the dusk broke at 0630 with the first calm light, the captain nodded for the for the competition to start. The anglers sheared the waters with their speeding boats heading North and North East from the Recreation centre.

The sea was too cold for any substantial game fishing. No rumours were heard off for the tuna or Eldorado. It was known that this competition was going to be very challenging for both categories bottom and game fishing.

Majority of the anglers roamed around 85 to 130 meters reef. No one ventured in the deep except for a one Angler, Said Al Harthi. Said favourite fishing spot during the year has been deep, some 14 km away from the shores .In fact, at the deep reefs Said would come back with giant good 4 kg plus groupers with various other fish. This time round, it resulted not to be a good day for Said. Majority of the boats were densed at East of the Al fahal Island at 125 meters reef. Only at 7 km from the shores.

Many boats including tourism ones and local fishermen were seen at this reef pulling reasonable size Andaq. Few Anglers were magnetised at this point, Captain Suleiman and his partner Ghassan, Said Al Harrasi and partner Sabri, Jamaal and young Osama, and the three trios Frans, Andrea and Ray. The result of this tournament would now be a recipe of luck, speed of retrieving the fish, and certainly fishing technique.

When you are at the sea one does not realise how fast the time passes by. It was already 1215 pm and minutes were closing in for the competition to end.

The four anglers, Bruce, Olivier Patrick and Fred were the first to arrive at the Ras Al Hamra buoys; this was followed by Frans, and partners, than the captain and his partner few seconds later exactly at 12:30:30 GPS time Jamaal and young Osama arrived. Then Said Al Harrasi and the weighing master Faisal Riyami/Salim Al Khatri arrived. The last two boats were way late on arrival. This meant three boats have to be disqualified for the weighing in. Difficult decision for the anglers but the sporting spirit of the anglers made it relatively easily to be taken.

At the weighing in, many were disappointed particularly with a handsome catch they made in the day. Said Harrasi came back with a good weighing hamour. The catch would have certainly won him a bottom prize. The catch is estimated at 10 kg. As to Jamaal and his son Osama, they had a beautiful catch of barracuda. I think this catch was the biggest and would have broken the recent barracuda weight record.

As to the rest of the competitors, captain Suleiman Al hajri and his son came back with 11.6 kg of the bottom catch wand 7 kg of game category. The only Mahi weighing 4.9 caught at his tornament.Bruce, Oliver, Patrick and Fred came back with a single hamour weighing 4.55 kg. This was enough for the prize giving ceremony to take the first bottom. The trio Frans Andrea and Ray managed to come back with a 54 kg game catch. The total catch of teh day including the disqulifcatio at the weighing in was 77 kg. Unfortunately only 32 kg was noted as a competition official catch !

As to the January fishing champions and the winners of the day prizes:

1. First Overall champion Captain Suleiman Al hajri 2. Second Overall Champion Ghassan Al hajri 3. First Bottom Champions Bruce, Oliver, Patrick and Fred 4. First Game fishing champion Frans 5. Second Bottom Champion Bruce, Oliver Patrick and Fred 6. Second Game fishing champion Andrea Kohler 7. The biggest fish of the day prize went to captain Suleiman with his Eldorado catch

weighing 4.9 kg

A wonderful day was concluded with a barbecue buffet lunch and prize giving ceremony.

Captain Suleiman Al hajri and Ghassan Al hajri the overall winners
