The only trophy was taken by Tom Ferreira’s ‘69 Valiant, who pre-registered but wasn’t even there. Go figure. Greatest Show On Turf, Sat August 6 Clubmember HemiBoy was there with his Satellite at 0-dark:thirty as he had to work the show due to his recent election to President of the San Diego Association of Car Clubs. He was honorable and didn’t throw the vot- ing his way, however, as the only Club member to trophy, out of the four who entered, was Rick Bobick’s custom Dodge. Somebody important once said some- thing like “Everything has a time, and there’s a time for everything”. I don’t know if that person was talking about solar power or not, but those two wild and crazy Swiss guys finally completed their around-the-world flight powering their plane with solar panels and electric motors. Yes, I am speaking to you about Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg flying the revolutionary Impulse 2 air- plane. Backed by a team of 50 multi-dis- ciplinary engineers from six countries, assisted by about 100 outside advisers and 80 technological partners. The final design turned out to be an aircraft that had a wingspan of 208 feet, was 72 feet long, and could cruise at 43 mph. The project was financed by a number of private companies and individuals, as well as receiving around $6.4 million from the Swiss government. Piccard said the entire project from 2003 until mid-2015 had cost $153 million. Pretty impressive number for a single seat aircraft. Start- ing and ending in Abu Dhabi, the 17 flight legs lasted from 44 hours to 117 hours, including transits over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. That’s a long time to hold your wee, so the seat was also the toilet. Hopefully, the plane was fitted with a rack to hold a dozen or so issues of Mopar Action. So, the around-the-world flight took 16-1/2 months to complete, 558 hours of which were actual air time. And there were technical issues to overcome that kept the intrepid flyers grounded while repairs were made. Well, all this is very impressive, is it not? And it demonstrates that green energy can do, um..., stuff. But was this practical? I mean, any around-the -world trip is gonna cost you big, I get that. But $153 mill? And take a year and a half to do it? One of the pilots admitted he needed a break. I bet. Yeah, there are hiccups in airline travel these days, but there’s no better way to get there from here than flying. Although my Cuda comes close. But what’s the next step? Once fossil fuels become outlawed, will Delta be trans- porting us in solar powered planes? “That’ll be $953 thousand, sir, for your round trip from San Diego to Phoenix. And you’ll get there in four days.” Can’t be worse than the delays caused by Delta’s computer crash. I guess.- Bob Gough, Y’r ‘umble Ed’tr. Showin’! Showin’! Showin’! Upcoming Events

It’s hard to fathom that our annual Club car show just had it’s 18th event. held at Miracosta College San Elijo Campus on Saturday July 16, the Mopar Club hosted over 240 cars. As is our custom, after expenses such as rentals and permits, the Club donates 100% of our net income. This year, our designated charities are USO San Diego, Homefront San Diego, War-rior Foundation Freedom Station and Wounded Warrior Homes. All are local charities that support our troops and rely on local funds for their good work. They staffed booths and sold raffle tickets, too. This year the weather was perfect. With the help of Club volunteers on parking, registration, judging and the raffle table, the event went off without a hitch. Also, in the pre-event build up, Clubmembers hit cruises and shows with 5000 flyers and several members were on hand at KUSI for a tv promo featuring Dave “Car Guy” Stall. Yessir, when it comes to hosting a car show, it can be said that The Mopar Club does it right. And be sure to check additional photos at our Club website:www.moparclubsandiego.net
