The Nowhere Emporium - Lesebegleiter Before you read 1

KV 1 Before you read

1. Look at the cover of “The Nowhere Emporium”. Answer the questions.

a) Describe the picture in one sentence.

There is an open book with empty, white pages and a pen which is lying on the book.

b) Do you write on paper? When and why?

Yes, I write on paper, for example at school when we do a test.

2. Now think about the title “The Nowhere Emporium”. Does it make sense1 to you? What could it be?

The title doesn’t really make sense to me. It could be a place that nobody can see. It could

be something connected to magic.

3. Read the Prologue (pp. 4-5). Draw lines to match the sentence parts.

1. The shop suddenly …

a) the people went into the shop.

2. People in the village …

b) the door of the shop opened.

3. Many people formed …

c) flew into the sky.

4. In the evening …

d) arrived in a village.

5. There were wonderful

smells and a dove …

e) told each other stories

about it.

6. There were fireworks in the

sky, then …

f) a crowd outside the shop.

4. What do you hope to find out when you go on reading the book?

I hope to find out … who the shop belongs to and what happens to the people inside the

shop. How do they pay and why don’t they remember anything later?

___________________________________________________________ 1 to make sense = Sinn ergeben; 2 memory = Gedächtnis

Who does the shop belong to? • What … ? • Why … no memory2?

1. How did Mr Silver’s life end? Write a short text. The words in the box will help you.

Silver tells Daniel and Ellie the true story about Michelle. He also tells them that he was

leading them to the true story about Sharpe through the magpies. Then he says that he

wants Daniel to continue the Emporium. Daniel accepts and the Book of Wonders changes

its cover into “The Wonders of Daniel Holmes”. Now the book only has empty pages. Mr

Silver wants to take a walk with Ellie in the fresh air before he leaves forever. They go out

together, walk along the street and then Silver disappears. Ellie goes back to the Emporium

and tells Daniel that she wants to help him with the Emporium.

Daniel as the new owner of the Emporium? Make notes.
