• The death and resurrection of our Lord is the centre of His purpose in coming into the world.

• It is the event upon which our salvation depends.

• “And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:17, NLT)

John 13:1-5

Verse 1NIV “the full extent of His love”Original Greek: “He loved them to the uttermost.” Totally to the end.

Jesus loves us without hold back anything for all eternity.

John 13:1-5Verse 2NIV “the devil had already prompted Judas to betray Him.” Greek can also mean, “the devil had already made up his mind that Judas should betray Him.”

The devil wanted to destroy Jesus and his strategy was to get one of the inner circle to betray Jesus to the authorities.

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, NIV84)

John 13:1-5Verse 3 - 5

The king of Kings

Worthy of all honour

Before whom every knee will bow.

This is who kneels before each disciple to do the work of a servant.

John 13:1-5Verse 8

“Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

The humility of the foot washing points to the greater humility of the Cross.

Unless we accept His act of love we will not be washed from sin.

John 13:1-5Verse 8

The outward acceptance that jesus died for sin has no meaning unless the heart accepts the love.

The betrayer accepts the foot washing but it is powerless to save him because his heart does not love Jesus.

John 13:12-17The practical meaning of foot washing. Give honour to others.

Jesus humbled Himself with out loss of face because He did it because of love.

Out of love the disciples must seek to give honour to others.

John 13:12-17Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.” (John 14:23, NIV84)

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.” (John 15:9, NIV84)

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12, NIV84)

John 13:18-20Did Jesus know who was going to betray Him?

He only knew that one of those he had chosen would betray Him. Because of the prophecy.

“Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.” (Psalm 41:9, NKJV)

“lifting up his heel” = “has given me a great fall” “has taken cruel advantage of me.”

John 13:21-27

According to Matthew and Luke Judas had already made a deal with the Chief Priests.

Judas had free choice. No one compelled him. He could have turned back.

John 13:21-27“Lord who is it?”

The first piece of bread was a special honour.

Was Jesus offering a last chance to turn back?

When Judas accepted the bread Satan took control.

John 13:28-30

“And it was night.”

A physical description of the time.

A spiritual reality: this was the hour that the powers of darkness were at work against Jesus.

John 13:31“Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in Him.”

The suffering, death and resurrection reveal like nothing else Jesus said or did, the full extent of His love and power. This is the glory of God.

Nothing else so clearly reveals the depth of God’s love or the greatness of His power
