WELCOME Theatre Calgary has presented Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story A Christmas

Carol for twenty-eight seasons. In that time over 675,000 people have attended

the production, and another 450 artists have been involved as actors, technicians,

designers, directors and other members of our creative family. At the end of each

performance, as happy patrons exit the theatre, we are reminded of the abiding

power of Dickens’ story to inspire and delight. There are audience members who

return year after year and bring their ever-expanding families. For many people,

attending A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary signals the beginning of their

holiday celebrations. Our tradition has become their tradition.

There have been various adaptations of the story presented on our stage over the

years. I’ve set this production in a winter wonderland. It’s a reflection of Scrooge’s

cold heart and I also think it’s a fitting nod to our chilly Calgary winter. Rather than

end our story with the snow melting and the ice receding, instead we celebrate

winter with a delightful skating party on a frozen river. Our story centres on one

man’s confrontation with his own selfish and destructive existence. By reflecting on

the life he has led, and more frighteningly, seeing the life he is destined to lead, this

man finds his way to redemption. And because of this, there is light and hope at

the heart of this story. For this reason we have filled our production with music

and laughter.

This production endures here at Theatre Calgary because our audiences

continue to support us year after year. Thank you for sharing this gift

with us.

for theatre calgary (selected): Liberation Days, To Kill a Mockingbird, Our Town, Romeo and Juliet, A Christmas Carol (1983, 1990, 1994). elsewhere: Duve’s association with Theatre Calgary goes back to the mid-70s and the Stage Coach Players where he acted, directed and eventually led the program. He then went on to co-found Quest Theatre where he served as Artistic Director for 25 years. Since then he has been very fortunate to have been featured on virtually every stage in Calgary and many more beyond. THE GIFT OF A LITTLE CHRISTMAS BOOK

“If Christmas, with its ancient and hospitable customs, its social and charitable observances, were ever in danger of decay, this is the book that would give them a new lease.”

– Thomas Hood on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, 1843

The autumn of 1843 was not a season of great cheer for Charles

Dickens. After a visit to one of London’s poorest schools, he

travelled to Manchester in October to speak on behalf of the

struggling Athenaeum, an institution that provided education

and recreation to the city’s enormous working class. Life in

newly industrialized Manchester was difficult at the time.

Most workers faced dangerous conditions and low pay, with

thousands relying on the charity of soup kitchens every day.

But while delivering his rousing speech to the Athenaeum’s

members, Dickens was inspired by the “bright eyes and

beaming faces” of the poor in his audience. Afterwards, he

spent the night walking the city’s grim streets and formed the

idea for A Christmas Carol.

On his return to London, Dickens threw himself headlong into

the new project. He was so eager to finish the book in time

for Christmas that he postponed meetings for several weeks,

sending his regrets to his lawyer, for example, by explaining

that he was “in the

middle of a roaring

Christmas scene.” In

a letter to a friend,

Dickens wrote that

he had “wept and

laughed and wept

again” while working

from morning to

evening on what he

affectionately called

“my little Christmas

book.”

When his publisher

expressed doubts

about A Christmas

Carol, Dickens put his

own finances on the

line to print the book.

He commissioned

the artist John Leech

to make illustrations

and woodcuts, chose

a festive red and gold

cover, and set the

price at a relatively affordable five shillings (a novel would sell

for around 30 shillings at the time).

With Dickens’ hard work, A Christmas Carol was ready just in

time for Christmas. Six thousand copies were published on

December 19, 1843, and every single one was sold by Christmas

Day. Newspaper reviews praised the book’s Yuletide message

of generosity and goodwill. “Who can listen to objections

regarding such a book as this?” wrote William Makepeace

Thackeray, a fellow novelist and one of Dickens’ foremost

rivals. “It seems to me a national benefit, and to every man and

woman who reads it, a personal kindness.”

Dickens soon received scores of letters from readers who

wanted to thank him for brightening their holiday season.

A prominent Scottish judge wrote to say that Dickens had

“fostered more kindly feelings and prompted more positive acts

of beneficence” with his one small book than all the sermons

and publications of the previous year’s Christmas combined.

As for Dickens, he was so cheered that he spent a full hour

performing magic tricks for children at a Christmas party that

year. He made plum pudding appear from a top hat and then

danced with his friends late into the night.

Playwright Philip Barry wrote The Philadelphia Story for his good friend Katharine

Hepburn, who badly needed a lead role after a series of box office failures in the late

1930s. She starred as Tracy Lord in the play’s hit Broadway premiere and returned to the

role a year later in the Oscar-winning classic film alongside Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart.

Critics and audiences loved the Shaw Festival's production of The Philadelphia Story

A CHRISTMAS CAROL GLOSSARY

Christmas carols A carol is a song of joy and praise,

often with a religious theme or

lesson. The Christmas tradition of

door-to-door caroling dates back

to the Middle Ages, and many

of today’s popular carols were

written in the 1800s.

Bob and quid “Bob” is slang for a shilling.

Twenty shillings make one pound,

which can also be called a “quid.”

Bob Cratchit earns 15 shillings a

week. This is less than the average

salary for a clerk in the 1840s,

which was around 25 shillings a

week.

Bedlam There was a notorious insane

asylum at the Hospital of St. Mary

of Bethlehem in London. The

name of this facility was often

shortened to “Bedlam.”

Workhouses and the Poor Law During Dickens’ time, the Poor Law forced many poor people

into prison-like workhouses, where they were given meagre

food and shelter in exchange for menial work.

Wassail Wassail is a drink consisting of ale or wine sweetened with

sugar and spices. The word comes from the Norse ves heill,

which means “be of good health.”

Robinson Crusoe Robinson Crusoe is the title character of a 1719 Daniel Defoe

novel, which follows the adventures of a castaway marooned

on an island for 28 years.

How does WorleyParsons celebrate the Christmas season with its staff?WorleyParsons considers its employees part of a bigger family so we definitely celebrate together during the holiday season. We have a children’s party with face painting and a visit from Santa and also host an adult dinner and dance. We also focus on the spirit of the season every day by celebrating the diversity of our staff. We have more than 2,000 employees in Calgary.

What value does partnering with Theatre Calgary provide WorleyParsons? We’ve been a partner of Theatre Calgary since May 2013. This partnership provides opportunities to get to know our customers and celebrate our business relationships. Through Theatre Calgary we can reach out to guests who prefer a cultural evening. This allows us to get closer to a more diverse customer base than at a sporting event or golf tournament. I have received very positive feedback from families, whom we have invited to attend productions like A Christmas Carol and Mary Poppins.

How does your partnership with Theatre Calgary support business development?Partnering with Theatre Calgary provides a unique, culturally-focused venue to have more open conversations with our customers outside the office. The more we get to know customers personally, the more we understand their business. A couples-based evening at Theatre Calgary allows us to connect with more senior executives than is possible at other events.

How have guests responded to your client events at Theatre Calgary?After an event at Theatre Calgary, more customers send me written thank you messages than any other WorleyParsons events. Based on these responses, I know there is a very strong appreciation for Theatre Calgary productions.

Would you recommend a partnership with Theatre Calgary to other companies?Not to our competition! (laughs) But in all seriousness, I would highly recommend it to any other company that wishes to develop and celebrate a business relationship in a unique way, while supporting the performing arts in Calgary. I am very impressed with how professionally Theatre Calgary is managed. The entire Theatre Calgary team provides a true “front of line” experience for our guests and employees.

What is your current role at WorleyParsons?I came to WorleyParsons as a Vice-President of Operations in April 2013 and am now Location Manager for WorleyParsons’ operations in what is called North America Central, which incorporates offices in Calgary, Edmonton, Tulsa and Houston.

With whom do you do business?We provide projects primarily for Fortune 100 companies in both the resources and energy sectors. Our business in North America is quite vast, including infrastructure & environment, onshore pipelines, offshore, minerals & metals, downstream, upstream, LNG and power. We provide conceptual design, front-end engineering and detailed design work to build facilities for customers at home and around the world, including oil & gas customers in Alberta and offshore in the US Gulf coast, North Sea and Australia. We also have a fabrication unit based in Edmonton and provide construction and construction management services as well as “brownfield services” to assist customers using new technology to increase capacity for existing projects and facilities.

When was WorleyParsons established?WorleyParsons is headquartered in Australia and, in 2007, established a presence in Calgary by acquiring Colt Companies – Canada’s largest engineering and project services firm.

What are some of WorleyParsons recent Calgary and Alberta projects?Some recent projects include High River flood mitigation, major projects in the oilsands and unconventional oil & gas projects in Alberta, BC and the US. We recently established a “repeatable design” process for projects, which enhances our customer’s bottom line.
