First Reading: John 1:1-18 (NAB)1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things came to be through him,and without him nothing came to be.

What came to be 4 through him was life,and this life was the light of the human race;

5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it

6

John 1:1-18 (NAB, cont.)

6 A man named John was sent from God.

7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light,so that all might believe through him.

8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.

9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him,but the world did not know him.

John 1:1-18 (NAB, cont.)

11 He came to what was his own,but his own people did not accept him.

12 But to those who did accept himhe gave power to become children of God,to those who believe in his name,

13 who were born not by natural generationnor by human choice nor by a man’s decisionbut [were born] of God.

John 1:1-18 (NAB, cont.)

14 And the Word became fleshand made his dwelling among us,and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only[-begotten] Son,full of grace and truth.

15 John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said,‘The one who is coming after me ranks aheadof me because he existed before me.’”

9

John 1:1-18 (NAB, concl.)

16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, 17 becausewhile the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18 No one has ever seen God. The only[-begotten] Son, God,who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

Matthew:“An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (1:1)

Luke:“Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, / just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, / I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, / so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.” (1:1-4)

En archē ēn ho logos

En archē Not “En tē archē” – “In THE beginning…” But “En archē…” – “In beginning; At origin…” Cf. Gen 1:1 – “In beginning, when God created

the heavens and the earth…”

Verb ĒN: imperfect past tense Not just one point in past time Implies continued action/existence in the past

Page 31: The Prologue of John: Proclaiming the Good News of Eternal Life! Religious Education Congress (Session 2-13) Archdiocese of Los Angeles – March 23, 2012

31

What Is the “Word” / “Logos”?

JESUS? Yes, but notice that the name “Jesus Christ” is

not mentioned until verse 17!

Page 32: The Prologue of John: Proclaiming the Good News of Eternal Life! Religious Education Congress (Session 2-13) Archdiocese of Los Angeles – March 23, 2012

32

En archē ēn ho logos Ho logos

Greek logos: not just “one word” Logos = word, phrase, sentence, speech

“Seven Last Words of Christ”? (Good Friday)

Logos = power of communication & reasoning Logic; Biology, Geology, Anthropology, Zoology, etc.

Genesis 1: God creates by speaking… OT: God’s Torah, Law, Instruction, Wisdom, Voice

John 1: God’s LOGOS / WORD is personified God’s “Speech Act” is inseparable, yet distinct

R.E. Congress 2012 Theme: Voice Infusing Life / Voz que infunde vida Reflection:

“Earth, with her thousand voices, praises God” (Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

…and so it was from the beginning, the Voice of God rang out, infusing all of creation with abundant life.

At other times, this “still small voice” calms troubled spirits, enabling all to reach for new horizons. A familiar voice stirring with the harmonies of care and reassurance awakened Lazarus and returned him to life, energy and renewed vitality.

Ours is a God whose voice resounds in the depth of our being calling us away from old habits, inviting us to embrace more wholesome ones. And today ... the voice reverberates and we echo God’s voice infusing life – giving hope, refreshing spirits.

– Sr. Edith Prendergast, RSC; Director, O.R.E.

34

Logos: God’s “Voice Infusing Life”Gospel of John: “Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming, and

is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” (5:25)

“My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.” (10:27; cf. 10:3-5, 16)

[After Jesus briefly prayed thanking God], he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" (11:43)

[Peter]: “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (6:68)

Page 35: The Prologue of John: Proclaiming the Good News of Eternal Life! Religious Education Congress (Session 2-13) Archdiocese of Los Angeles – March 23, 2012

35

En archē ēn ho logos… …kai ho logos ēn pros ton theon…

God = Greek “Theos”; Latin “Deus” (Eng. “Theo-”)

The logos was not just “with” (next to) God,but “face to face” or “turned towards” God!

…kai theos ēn ho logos. Not just “the word was divine” (Jehovah’s Witnesses)

But “the Word was God” from before time began Alt.: “What God was the Word also was”

Page 36: The Prologue of John: Proclaiming the Good News of Eternal Life! Religious Education Congress (Session 2-13) Archdiocese of Los Angeles – March 23, 2012

36

Review – A (vv.1-2) & A’ (v.18)A 1 In origin was the Logos/Word,

and the Logos was face to face with God, and what God was the Logos [also was].2 He was in origin face to face with God.

A’ 18 No one has seen God ever. The only-begotten God [or Son], the one existing in the bosom/lap of the Father, that one has revealed [him].

Page 37: The Prologue of John: Proclaiming the Good News of Eternal Life! Religious Education Congress (Session 2-13) Archdiocese of Los Angeles – March 23, 2012

37

A (vv.1-2) & A’ (v.18) Compare A & A’

Verses 1-2: Logos & God Verse 18: Son & Father

“No one has even seen God”? 1st Cent. debates: Did Moses see God? Jesus is the best REVEALER of God!

Textual Variations in v. 18: Mono-genes theos = “only-begotten God” Mono-genes huios = “only-begotten Son”

Page 38: The Prologue of John: Proclaiming the Good News of Eternal Life! Religious Education Congress (Session 2-13) Archdiocese of Los Angeles – March 23, 2012

38

Is Jesus the “Only Son” of God? We are used to saying “yes” – “of course he is”!

But: old translations of Gloria & Creed inaccurate! Aren’t believers “children/sons/daughters of God”?

Jesus is the “Only-Begotten” (not “One and Only”) In contrast, we are “adopted” as children/heirs (Paul) John 1:14 & 1:18 – mono-genes John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world that he gave his

only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”

John 3:18 - “Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.”
