(That is, an annual average of over 4kWh/meter 2 /day.) • About 2 billion people, one third of humanity, inhabit these regions. Most of them live in poverty and suffer declining quality of life. • Their traditional fuel is wood and the supply is dwindling. At least 100 million already “experience virtual fuelwood famine.” (FAO 1997) • Smoke from cooking fires causes pandemic respiratory and eye diseases. Children are frequently burned. Foraging for fuel wood is increasingly punishing to women as th ey must go ever further to find it. Frequently, it is also perilous. SOLAR COOKING ALLEVIATES ALL THESE PROBLEMS. AND MORE. Destruction of carbon sequestering trees is curtailed. Atmospheric pollution is substantially reduced. Green areas are outside the purview of prime solar cooking regions because only seasonal solar cooking is possible. Data depicted in this map are approximate.
