President Peter reminded the members present of the upcoming District Conference and encouraged as many members as possible to attend. President Peter further announced to the members present, of the Board decision taken to make Ian Thomas an honorary member of the Essendon Rotary Club in recognition of the work he has done over many years as an active member since 1979.

New member assimilation President Peter also said that new members need to be assimilated and in order to do so in a relaxed setting he invited all members on the 27th August Thursday night at 7pm to the Wine Cellar door in Hall Street Moonee Ponds, all members are welcome to attend this night, for new members to get to know each other and know more about Rotary. Our new exchange student Freja in her new school uniform (left) Freja has never worn a uniform to school in her native Finland. Note from Jenny Foster Jenny Foster spoke next and informed the members of the International day she has organised on the 18th August and wanted everyone to come in an attire of their country of origin or heritage but did not know the difference between a Saree worn by a lady in Sri Lanka and a sarong worn by a man!! (And Jenny says she has travelled the world!!) Jenny admitted that she is of Scottish back ground (that explains it), where the men wear “short skirts” and so do the women. We got to be present for this function, cross dressers welcome.

Thank you to Karyn Jenny also wanted to say a big Thank you to Karyn Clarke for the assisting at DIK last week, Jenny said it was great to have Karyn come along to assist pack the medical equipment. Jenny wanted to inform the other members if they want to join in helping herself and John Odgers on the 13th August to please inform her. Note from John Odgers DIK packing container for Kenya, new hope for widows and orphans on the 15th August start at 9am shed 40 DIK, 400 Somerville Road West Footscray. Please contact John Odgers or Connie Maina for more details Other events Veronica O’Sullivan had to pay a fine for having another birthday! Tony Colicchia won the raffle but failed to draw the joker. Sergeant Neil Henderson then decided to have a spelling B and forced the contestants (selected by him) to pay a fine whether they spelt the words correctly or not, but Neil himself could not get the spelling of “accelerator” correct!! And had to pay a fine himself!! Note from Michael Cariss – Michael wishes to advise all members that the club directories have all been distributed, if further copies are needed please contact Peter Baker or Michael Cariss.

Speaker for the day Chairperson of the day Jenny Foster then introduced the speaker for the day Dr Laura Hougaz Relationship Manager Education First Youth Foyer.

Dr Laura Hougaz said that Hanover Housing had merged with Launch housing to provide accommodation places for young people who are homeless. These people are provided with accommodation provided they make a commitment to education, Laura said there are Youth Foyers in Glen Waverly, Broadmeadows and a new facility is now being built in Shepparton. Government is now looking at 2 more accommodation centres, Laura said that Victoria is the only state to have this programme and the Youth Foyers are facilities available for youths between the ages of 16 and 24 years. Laura spoke about the open talent programme to explore the hidden talents of the youth that come into the programme. Laura said that there is a Multi-disciplinary staff system to attend to the needs of the youth in the programme. Laura also said that there are 6 service offers to the youth and explained each one by way of a power point presentation and mentioned the importance in teaching the youth, wellbeing- proper eating, drinking plenty of water, social connections. Civic participation – giving back to the

community. Housing & Living skills – learning how to look after a house and pay the bills. Teaching the youth how to write a resume and interview skills, were some of the areas that the programme focused. Laura informed the members that anybody who is interested in mentoring these youth or in any other way contributing to their development to contact her on 0409 416 108 or email – [email protected] Mens’ Shed Strathmore Mens Shed (SMS) will have its first open session at 10am, Saturday 29/8/2015 and we need

volunteers to assist on this day and into the future. SMS will be run on a day to day basis by 3 Rotary Clubs:

Essendon, Essendon North and Strathmore. Moonee Valley Council will provide support as required.

We currently have more than 80 people who have indicated that they wish to use the SMS and we expect a

large turn-out on the 29th so we need your help to ensure this day is successful. This would involve managing

the enrolment procedures, but not matters related to handling tools or machinery.

After this day we require volunteers to assist with running the hands-on sessions and this will involve tools and

machinery. Lino Airo-Farulla has already volunteered and we are seeking more members, or friends of

members, who might enjoy being more closely involved with this significant Rotary community project. For

more information contact Alistair Fraser, 9379 4836 or 0411 117 881.

Wanted Youth Exchange Host Families

Rotary Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people between the ages of 16 and 17 years of age who spend a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs. Hosting an exchange student can be an incredibly rewarding experience for your family, providing an international experience without leaving home. Host families come in all shapes and sizes, you can help by: • Asking non-Rotarian families - that may be interested in hosting a Youth Exchange student. • Asking fellow club members - during a meeting at which partners are present or after another student has attended a meeting and has met many of the club’s members. • Asking Families of Youth Exchange alumni - to act as hosts. Many of these families would like to participate in the program because of the opportunity provided to their own children. • Asking club members - for the names of families in their communities they feel would make good host parents. • Asking families - who have successfully hosted students to recommend other families in the community who would be interested in hosting. To learn more about Youth Exchange hosting Contact Vanda Mullen Youth Exchange Committee chair [email protected] or visit Youth Exchange website
