“The Script” is available on their website
Splinters From The Chair he Klondike Day’s Breakfast was held last Sunday. I was
away in Florida on business however Mary went and said
we had another great turnout. I spoke with Lorne tonight
to confirm there were 51 people for breakfast and about
22 stayed for lunch. Thank you to all the cooks, helpers, and
the Schmidt family for hosting this event at their home once
again.
If you have not already done so it is still not too late to regis-
ter for our “Exploring the Lake Region” Oldies Tour coming up
on August 15th through the 18th. The cut-off for giving the
various meal venues final numbers is August 10th so don’t
hesitate if you are thinking about what to do on that weekend.
We presently have 20 registrations with 39 people planning to
attend. If you cannot make the tour you might want to see the
cars off at 9:30 AM on Thursday, August 15th. We will be
leaving from the Country Roads Tempo on the Yellowhead
Highway just East of Highway 21 in Strathcona County.
Another couple of events coming up are the Mystery Tour on
Wednesday, August 7th departing from the Old Timer’s Cabin
@ 7:00 PM and a tour to the Reynolds Alberta Museum on
Sunday August 11th. Additional information on both of these
events is included under the Schedule of Events in the Running
Board.
While we are still in summer and looking forward to at least
two months of good touring weather I would like to remind you
that with the fall approaching the club will be looking for candi-
dates to run for the board for 2014. We will be commencing

The Edmonton Antique Car Club
he Edmonton Antique Car Club is registered in the Province of Alberta as a
nonprofit society, interested in historical motor vehicles and related collectible
items. Our club is dedicated to the acquisition, restoration, preservation, sal-
vage, maintenance of and promotion of interest in cars from the following
categories.
The Horseless Carriage Era (1892 to 1905)
The Brass Era (1906 to 1915)
The Vintage Era (1916 to 1927)
Early Production (1928 to 1935)
Late Production (1936 to 1948
Classics (1925 to 1948) (Defined by The Classic Car Club of America.)
Our objectives also include encouraging the retention of such vehicles in Al-
berta, promoting driving tours, displays and other activities our vehicles can
participate in, and educating the general public in the historical contribution of
the automobile in the development of our Canadian heritage.
Our membership is varied as to careers and cars, and extends country wide. To
qualify as a member, new applicants must be at least 14 years of age; must
complete an application form (which is submitted to the club executive for
approval), and pay a nominal membership fee of $40.00 per year (spousal,
additional $20). It is not necessary to own a vintage car, but merely to have an
interest in antique auto memorabilia.
In the club discriptor on the lower half of page 2, please add back in the first two categories of auto-mobile: The Horseless Carriage Era (1892 to 1905); The Brass Era (1906 to 1915).
Please add the following to the Schedule of Events for 2012:
Sat. May 26, Fort Assiniboine to Bar-rhead Run (contact Steve Bemount) Sun. Jun 3, EACC 50th Anniversary Picnic at Leduc West Wed. Jun 20 thru Tue. Jun 26, EACC 50th Anniversary Tour
General Meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday evening of each
month, with tours and events being dispersed throughout the calendar year. The
Annual General Meeting is held each year in January.
Our club members participate in a variety of events and activities which pro-
mote social interaction among members, and give them an opportunity to drive
their cars and display them to the general public. Annual events include the
Klondike Breakfast, the Corn Roast, and mystery tours. Senior visits are a
way for our club to give back to the community. Members also participate in
community events such as Sunday in the City , Father’s Day in the Park, Crys-
tal Kids, and harvest festivals. Our club participates in the annual International
Meet in which members from all corners of Western Canada and the North-
west United States come together for a wonderful exchange of camaraderie,
trophies and good old-fashioned fun.
Our club publishes a monthly newsletter, The Running Board. Members are
encouraged to submit articles and other items of interest to the editor for publi-
cation. As a member you are entitled to receive a copy of each issue and to run
free classified ads in the “Swap Meet” section.
Club members as a group have a wealth of experience and knowledge of all
aspects of the antique car hobby which they will share with you. Bring your
particular problem to our membership and you will be probably be directed to
an expert in that field.

with nominations to fill the board positions being vacated at the
end of this year at the October General Meeting.
Please give the opportunity to serve your club some serious
consideration over the next couple of months – I know from
first-hand experience becoming involved on the board and tak-
ing an active role in running the club is very rewarding and
gives you an opportunity to work with a fine group of dedicated
individuals. I would particularly recommend this to our newer
members as a term on the board is a great way to meet many if
not the majority of the membership over a relatively short pe-
riod of time.
Until Next Month - Happy Motoring

Churchill Manor Retirement Residence July 12 Friday July 12th turned out to be a great day for a Seniors Visit
to Churchill Manor located on 34 Ave in Millwoods. This was

with chips and refreshments.

berta, Alison Redford. Lunch was provided as well.
Those members who attended were as Follows
Verna & Ron Eagleson 1937 Ford Coupe

crowd.

52nd Annual International
Antique Car Meet by Steve Bemount
The 2013 International was hosted by the Central Alberta
Vintage Auto Club of Red Deer and was based at the Olds Col-
lege in Olds, Alberta, from Friday June 28 through Monday
July 1. The weather was beautiful, the fellowship outstanding,
and the automobiles provided plenty of eye-candy for the
heartiest of enthusiasts.
The cars arrived on Friday afternoon. Following registra-
tion, all assembled for a Show and Shine between 6 and 8 p.m.
in the parking lot at the College. Participants were divided in
their choice of lodging and you picked one touring activity for
each of Saturday and Sunday from three touring choices. So
the Show and Shine was really the only time that the cars were
all together in one place, and what a fine sight it was. This is
also when most of the voting went on for the various people’s
choice awards. The Show and Shine was followed by the tradi-
tional Wine and Cheese Reception.
The three touring choices for Saturday and Sunday were the
PaSu Sheep Farm, the Discovery Wildlife Park and Innisfail
Historical Village, and the Weidner and Gilmour Automobile
Collections. We picked the Innisfail attractions for Saturday
and the automobile collections for Sunday. I must say that the
bear show at the Wildlife Park is quite remarkable. It is really
amazing how those huge animals have been trained to star in
movies and commercials. But of course the true highlights for
this incurable addict were to be found in the two automobile
collections. Robert and Dave Weidner had their collection
beautifully displayed out in the sunshine. I particularly enjoyed
seeing the 1936 Auburn Roadster, the 1930 Cadillac Fleetwood
V8 Roadster, and two Cords: a 1931 L29 Sedan and a 1937
Supercharged Convertible that once belonged to movie actor
Dick Powell. Lois Gilmour and her son Parker were our hosts
for the Gilmour collection. Lois is Charlie Parker’s daughter
and she has some beautiful pieces collected by both her late
father and her late husband Harold Gilmour. Charlie’s legen-
dary 1913 Lozier is quite exceptional; Charlie drove this car
across Canada in the first Coast-to-Coast Tour in 1967. Also of
special interest was Harold’s 1932 Stutz 8 Cabriolet, the 1922
Kissel Gold Bug, and the 1925 Pierce-Arrow Touring that is
believed to have originally belonged to silent screen legend
Mary Pickford.
Saturday night’s banquet had a Roaring Twenties theme and
a number of participants dressed the part. Once again, Lillie
Quinn of Lethbridge and Ted Weale of Calgary were recog-
nized for perfect attendance at all 52 Internationals. The Fur-
thest Driven Award went to Doug and Karen Winz who drove
their 1966 Chevrolet Caprice from Missoula. The Oldest
Driver was Myrl Goddard, age 86, of Olds who drove a 1931
Ford A Convertible Sedan. The Youngest Driver was Cheryl
Cass, age 44, of Okotoks who drove a 1971 VW Superbeetle.
The Hard Luck Award went to Boyd Lampman of Calgary who
had fuel pump problems
with his 1952 Studebaker
Commander. The Club
Participation Award for the
club with the greatest per-
centage of its members at-
tending, other than the host-
ing club, went to the Alberta
Pioneer Auto Club of Cal-
gary.
In addition to the three
traditional International
Awards (the Ed Pargee,
Floyd Skogen, and Leah
Robertson Awards), the
hosting Red Deer club, at its
discretion, offered five addi-
tional awards for this year:
Best Pre 30, Best 30s, Best
40s, Best 50s, and Best 60s;
all were done by popular
vote. The Best Pre 30
Award went to Rod Doupe
Best Pre 30 - Rod Doupe's 1929 DeSoto Touring
Supercharged 1937 Cord Conv. from Weidner Collection
Charlie Parker's 1913 Lozier from the Gilmour Collection

Calgary. Best 40s was a 1947 Studebaker Champion Converti-
ble owned by Randy and Joan Ross, Lethbridge. Best 50s was
a 1951 MGTD, Jim and Linda Herbert, Calgary. And the Best
60s was a 1962 T-Bird Landau, Alf Johnson, Calgary.
This year’s winner for the Ed Pargee People’s Choice
Award, 1948 and older, went to EACC’s own Ron and Danin
Bodnar for their 1932 Franklin Dietrich Speedster. The Floyd
Skogen Award for People’s Choice, 1949 and newer, went to
Malcolm and Sharon Fischer of Stettler for their 1958 Buick
Roadmaster. There were two winners for this year’s Leah
Robertson Award for the oldest car driven on the tour: Walter
Bushfield of Calgary and Martin and Sylvia Mathon of Innifail;
both arrived with a 100-year-old 1913 Overland 69T.
Things wound up on Monday morning with an omelet-in-a-
baggie breakfast at the Saby Ranch west of Olds. There were a
total of 97 vehicles and 197 people participating in this year’s
International with 222 attending the banquet. There were 16
EACC vehicles in attendance. The members of CAVAC are to
be commended for a job very well done!
The 2014 International will be held in Missoula, Montana,
from Friday June 27 through Sunday June 29. The Missoula
Pioneer and Classic Auto Club have set a new standard by dis-
tributing their 2014 registration forms at this year’s Interna-
tional. The International will be in Lethbridge in 2015, Great
Falls in 2016, and here in Edmonton in 2017 (it’s not too early
to start thinking about 2017). These are great events. Where
else can you meet fellow enthusiasts from across the Canadian
prairies and the northwestern U.S.? The International Tours
deserve your support.
The International
by John Eggertson
The Pasu Farms has been on our list to go to for years. We
were always too early or too late going by but thanks to the
International we made it. We had a great deal of fun at the Pasu
Sheep Farm. The lady who owned the farm gave us a great talk
on the history of the farm. They had no intention to get into the
sheep business but as time went on they found themselves in
the business. They created a fabulous Gift Shop. My wife had a
ball there, many trinkets. Their restaurant was great we had a
Mediterranean sandwich and it was very tasty and right on
track.
The banquet was a great success and great food and we got
our second table decoration from an International Meet, and
proudly display them together.
The next day we went to Innisfail Game Farm. The pictures
show some of the animals there. I had to be careful to stay
down wind on the predators as we had our little Shih Tzu with
us, but got some good pictures of the undulates and BIG BIRD.
The next day we went for breakfast at a club members farm and
had a great time. Breakfast in a bag? Yes and it was a great
omelet. A lot of good fellowship followed by good byes.

The Lady Michelle and I had the pleasure
of hosting the Model T World Tour folks for
three days in late July as they passed through
Edmonton on their way around North Amer-
ica. The brainchild of Dirk and Trudy Reg-
ter, this remarkable journey began in 2012
with a run from Holland through the Middle
East and down to South Africa. After a
Christmas break during which their 1912
Ford T Touring and 2006 Land Rover De-
fender support vehicle were shipped to Hous-
10
ton, TX, the tour resumed with a circle
around North America. For 2014, their goal
is the bottom of South America and back up
to Brazil. In 2015 they continue on around
New Zealand and Australia, then up through
Asia and home to Holland. See map above
for more details, and be sure to visit their
website at www.tfordworldtour.org.

When I asked Dirk his preference for high-
way or gravel roads before driving to Leduc-
West, the answer was an emphatic “gravel!”. A
man after my own heart, and very much in tune
with the route we developed for the next leg to
Thunder Bay, right. Just 2,100 km by the Yel-
lowhead and Trans Canada, the team will actu-
ally travel 3,600+ km by way of Fort
McMurray, Edam SK (the Regters hail from
Edam, Holland), Prince Albert, Flin Flon and
The Pas.
They pick up a fresh crew in Thunder Bay
on August 20th (and also Trudy, who has been
home with the kids and grandchildren since mid
-July) and make for Atlantic Canada before
heading back south to the massive AACA
Swap Meet in Hershey, PA on Oct. 9-12.
Scenes From The Road

Camel pays homage to the Mighty T Ford
near Atbara in Eastern Sudan.
A broken king pin turned the T into a tricy-
cle, and prompted this 4-hour repair session in
the 45°C Tanzanian sun. Dirk and Trudy’s son
Dirk-Jan (at left) and daughter-in-law Inge were
a heavy fitted tarp if there are any concerns
about prowlers.
The cracked wishbone brace gets welded
in Tanzania. Dirk and Trudy drove this car
from Peking to Paris in 2007 and learned
much on that trip about vehicle preparation.
I had the pleasure of driving the T a few
miles and was blown away by how tight
and solid it felt and drove despite all the
miles and roads it has seen so far this trip.

problems of note during the Africa leg were
two flat tires, a broken wheel and failed
wishbone (front suspension member).
The T Tour is helping raise money for
the international SOS Children's Villages
charity, and visited this SOS location in
Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. One gets the impres-
sion these kids don’t see many Model T
Fords in their village.

The Foothills Model T Ford Club in Cal-
gary is an active group of over 90 members
admitting to, depending whom you ask, some
200-300 cars. Jerry de Jong and I joined five
Ts from Calgary for their second annual
camping tour, happening last month in North
eastern Alberta…

The high point for most of us was a visit
to CFB Cold Lake and a tour of a real live
CF18 Fighter Jet, including a photo-op on the
tarmac and a few minutes each in the cock-
pit. We totalled six cars but two stayed at the
campground, one with a broken crankshaft
and the other all set up for sleeping. Folks in
the middle are Rhonda Ireland, our base host,
and CF-18 pilot and tour guide Captain
Craig “Waldo” Reidiger (credit Cpl Audrey
Solomon, 4 Wing Imaging).
Captain Craig excused himself after al-
most an hour as he was due for a training
flight... and we saw this jet and several others
take off an hour or so later (Robb Wolff
photo).
Those Calgary sissies all trailered their
cars to Vegreville while Jerry and I motored
right past Veg to Mannville the night before
to visit a friend. We met these Hutterities at a
crossroads and had an impromptu car show
on the way.
Robb Wolff had a lovely period-look
camper and canoe on his T plus a variety of
vintage cookware — breakfast on Day 2 was
enhanced with fresh “cinnamon cake a la
Robb” baked in a 1920s camp oven on the
Coleman stove. Breakfast and most suppers
were communal meals in the campgrounds,
and lunches were group or on-our-own affairs
at local restaurants.
Harry and Rose Lillo’s beautiful 1920 De-
pot Hack, with full side curtains and uncom-
mon but very striking barrel-sided body (RW
photo).
Rose Lillo brought this cute little portable
gramophone and a selection of vintage 78s.
Tom van Dijk’s wife stayed home in Cal-
gary but he brought Daisy, one of two pups on
tour, who seemed to really enjoy the trip but
never did catch any of those squirrels.
Our first lunch stop was in St. Paul to visit
the 1967 Centennial UFO Landing Pad and
where Team Bamfords Garage picked up a
third member, “Paula” the Inflatable
Alien (RW photo).
The Calgary cars travelled 389 miles over
five days, trailer to trailer. Jerry and I
clocked 640 miles total at an impressive 27
mpg (and an all-too-typical 300 miles per
quart of oil).
