Short history of Sámi people

Sami history reaches at least back to the beginning of our era. Many older researchers have drawn conclusions about Sami history that it is much older than that, sometimes since the Ice Age.

Today, archaeologists are not so inclined to use contemporary ethnic designations of ancient cultures. Regarding the Stone Age cultures caught in the Nordic means leading researchers to their primary collective identity was probably linked to the local group or family and not any larger, overall unit corresponding to the Sami people. Some time around the birth of Christ, it is relevant to talk about a Sami ethnicity according to most contemporary scholars. Over the centuries, then begins Sami also to be mentioned in the white sources.
