Asa-Di-Vaar Kirtan Seva At San Diego Gurdwara

San Diego Gurdwara is very fortunate and honored to be able to have a Diwan once a month on Sat morning where Asa-Di-Vaar kirtan will be recited. This diwan will take place the First Saturday of every month unless that Sat falls on a long weekend. In that case we will switch to the Second Saturday. This seva will begin this month in June. Should you wish to sign up for Langar Seva for this Diwan in any of the upcoming months please speak to any of the Operations Committee Sevadaar’s or the Bhai Ji’s. They will be able to assist you with this.

Diwan’s For June / July

The following diwan’s will be observed for June / July in addition to the regular Wed & Sun Diwan Rotation. Tue Jun 16th Guru Arjun Sahib Ji Shaeedi Purabh – 06:30 pm- 08:00 pm. Fri Jun 19th – Sun Jun 21st Akhand Path to observe Guru Arjun Sahib Ji Shaheedi Purabh - Fri 07:30 am start – conclude Sun 11:00 am Diwan - 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. Sun Jul 5th Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Parkash Diwas. Regular Diwan Time 11:30 am onwards. Sat Jul 11th Asa-Di-Vaar Kirtan followed by Sukhmani Sahib & Senior’s Diwan – 08:00 am onwards.

Thu Jul 23rd Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji Parkash Diwas - 06:30 pm- 08:00 pm.

Language Barriers

The other day I was walking with a friend and we saw an elderly lady with a small dog and she was walking our way. As she passed, we asked if we could pet her dog, and she said haltingly, “I don’t know English.” My friend and I apologized and the lady said, “Ciao!” and I responded the same, to which her face lit up and she started talking to me. She spoke in rapid Italian and I understood small bits and pieces because I had taken some Spanish at school and I told her that, to which her smile grew even wider. She pointed to where she lived, and started talking about how Italians and Spanish people could communicate even in different languages and I thought that was very interesting. We said our goodbyes and went on our way. That event got me thinking. A woman who probably spent her life in Italy just met a teenager and started to pour her heart out to her just because she said one word in the same language. She must have been feeling overwhelmed in this county where the dominant language was English. I did not know Italian, all I knew was a little Spanish, but this enabled us to communicate for a few minutes. What caused her to continue talking to me even though there was no obligation to keep talking? Was she just having a good day or was she always like this? Did she need a friend or was feeling lonely? Point is, even the smallest effort made to try and understand somebody else, like me saying “ciao”, can make all the difference to somebody else. Imagine if we all made the effort to try and understand people we don’t usually agree with and consider why. You might be surprised and find a commonality or at the least be content understanding the viewpoint of somebody else. The smallest commonality can easily bloom into respect and compassion.
