PROF. OMER BARTOV BROWN UNIVERSITYVisiting Scholar, Spring 2014

In the Spring of 2014, the Roth Institute hosted Prof. Omer Bartov of Brown University for a visit of two months. One of the world’s leading scholars of the Holocaust, Prof. Bartov delivered a lecture on “The Holocaust as Genocide” within the context of Tel Aviv

University’s Board of Governors Meeting and also led a workshop for graduate students at Tel Aviv University on Holocaust Studies and other aspects of modern European history. In addition to these events, Prof. Bartov’s extended visit enabled him to meet with different faculty members and graduate students to

discuss their research. Although the

Roth Institute r e g u l a r l y hosts visitors

f rom leading universities in

North America and Europe, such long-

term visits allow for a more substantial and

meaningful exchange of ideas as well as time

to develop cooperative projects. Indeed, as

a result of discussions

with Prof. Bartov and other faculty members from Brown, members of Brown’s Program in Judaic Studies will take part in different programs sponsored by the Roth Institute, including a workshop this summer at Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Bartov’s visit was the result of cooperation between the Roth Institute and several different units at TAU’s Faculty of Humanities including the Cummings Center for Russian and East European Studies and the Institute for the History of Polish Jewry and Israel-Poland Relations as well as the International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem.

PROF. THOMAS J. SUGRUE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIAVisiting Scholar, May 2013

history and urban studies, Prof. Sugrue gave a guest lecture on “The Education of Barack Obama: Race, Identity, and Politics in the Age of Fracture,” led a graduate-student workshop, and consulted with students and faculty from TAU and other universities in Israel.

Sponsored by the Roth Institute in cooperation with TAU’s Program

in American Studies and the Legal History Workshop, Prof. Sugrue’s visit offered students, faculty and community members a unique opportunity to discuss current research on race and racism in American society with one of the world’s leading experts on these and related questions.

In May, 2013, the Roth Institute hosted Prof. Thomas J. Sugrue from the University of Pennsylvania. A leading scholar of African-American

the Jewish and Arab worlds, with the purpose of advancing mutual acceptance. It also organizes an annual event commemorating Zeev Vered, and sponsors occasional lectures and conferences on related topics.

Through the Zeev Vered Project, the Roth Institute also monitors manifestations and expressions of antisemitism in the Arab world. Dr. Webman and her research staff regularly monitor a wide range of Arabic newspapers and other media outlets on an ongoing basis. This material is entered into TAU’s Database for the Study of

Antisemitism and Racism and also included in the Annual R e p o r t o n Antisemitism publ ished in c o o p e r a t i o n w i t h TAU ’s Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry.

A leading scholar of Jewish society in Muslim lands, Dr. Webman regularly comments on current affairs in the media and consults with government officials, both in Israel and abroad.

The Zeev Vered Project for the Study of Tolerance and Intolerance in the Middle East was established by Mrs. Sara Vered of Ottawa, Canada in memory of her late husband Zeev Vered in December, 2009.

Created in 2011 as part of the Roth Institute’s efforts to promote world-class research and academic discussions at Tel Aviv University on topics related to antisemitism and racism, the Roth Institute’s Research Group on Antisemitism and Racism consists of gradaute students from across TAU’s campus. In addition to receiving financial support, members of the Research Group convene regularly to present and discuss their research, meet with visiting scholars from leading universities in Israel, North America and Europe, and conduct their research in the Roth Institute’s working space in TAU’s Gilman Building. Together, these different activities help forge a community of students, researchers and scholars at TAU working on various aspects of antisemitism or racism. Members of the 2012-2014 Research Group included a range of graduate students from different departments at Tel Aviv University including those from the departments of comparative literature, history, Jewish history, law, religious studies and social work.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism undertakes academic research and provides a forum for discussion of issues related to antisemitism and racism, their history, and their social, institutional and cultural settings. The focus of the Institute is the social and political manifestations of these phenomena since the end of World War II.

To that end, the Institute:

nUndertakes research projects on aspects of antisemitism and racism, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that draws on the skills and resources of various departments at TAU.

nOrganizes international conferences and workshops, both independently and in cooperation with academic institutions within and outside Israel.

nHosts visiting scholars and distinguished academic lecturers from outside Israel for extended periods.

nContributes to the annual survey of antisemitic trends throughout the world in cooperation with TAU’s Kantor Center for the Study of European Jewry. The annual report is based on an authoritative database of antisemitic manifestations worldwide that is accessible through the internet.

nProvides support for graduate students from different faculties and departments at TAU whose research projects focus on various aspects of antisemitism or racism.

nActs as a resource center for persons interested in this subject, both within Israel and outside.
