• What is The Tenth Life?– Non-profit corporation in Greene County

– Operated with volunteers and a full-time veterinarian

– Member of Better Business Bureau

– No-kill haven for over 400 homeless/unwanted cats

– Adoption service to place cats in responsible homes

– Education/advisory service for cat care and problems

– Provider of life enrichment through pet therapy visits to nursing homes and care facilities


• What is a no-kill facility?– Do not put cats to sleep unless terminally ill to

prevent suffering

• When started– Nov 1984 with one building and 81 cats

• Why started– Need

– Dissatisfaction with other organizations


• Purpose– To provide a home environment to adoptable stray and

unwanted cats until suitable home can be found

– To provide a permanent home to unadoptable cats, ill, feral, leukemia or AIDs positive

– To educate people on responsible pet ownership, importance of spaying/neutering, respect of animals, etc.

– To reduce the over-population problem of cats


• Growth– Facility mortgage free after 15 years

– One building to five in twenty years – all connected

– All construction with donations – no interest accruing funding

– Full-time veterinarian

– Fully equipped health care facility

– 81 to over 400 cats


• How funded– Fundraisers - 8% of funding

• Entertainment books ( need retail stores - sell books)

• Mehaffie’s pies – Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas

• Flower and vegetable sale

• $3.00 donation

• Raffles

• Penny fund

• Recycling of aluminum

• Christmas wreaths, roping, and plants

• Craft shows, festivals, bazaars


– Private donations – 30% of funding

– CFC/United Way – 46% of funding

– Adoption fee – 15% of funding

– Sponsor program(187 cats) – 1% of funding

– All funding used for care of cats, no paid staff except veterinarian

• Cost of operation– Nearly $100,000 annually


• How advertise– Word of mouth

– Newspaper advertisement

– Referrals from veterinarians

• Who adopt to – Responsible pet owners

– Commit to keep pet for life barring unforeseen circumstances

– Provide loving home

– Maintain vaccinations

– Obtain needed veterinary care


• Care provided prior to adoption– All cats enter The Tenth Life through health care facility– Blood tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDs– Spayed/neutered– Vaccinated for distemper, leukemia, and rabies– Treated for internal and external parasites– Socialized if shy or feral– Microchip implanted for identification– Evaluated for adoptability


• Services provided– Healthy cats available for adoption– Spay/neuter information– Telephone hotline to handle cat problems– Speaking to groups on responsible pet ownership– Educational tours of the facility – Pet therapy visits to local nursing homes and care facilities– Quarterly newsletter– Educational handbook


• Ways to help– Volunteer– Donate funds– Donate supplies - paper towels, bleach, Lysol wipes– Sponsor a cat ($10.00 per month donation)– Save aluminum – Save pennies– Be a responsible pet owner– Encourage all your friends to be responsible pet owners and

spay/neuter all pets– Participate in our fund raisers
