If you have young children, you have

probably either heard of or visited an Upper Clutha mainly music session during the past 10 years. We offer children aged 0-5 and their caregivers a weekly music and movement session, followed by morning tea and playtime. Not only do children develop motor skills, language, and imagination, but they enjoy spending time with their mum/dad/grandparent and the other kids. The warm and welcoming community that has developed is also great place for parents to connect.

Our Wanaka sessions are on Tuesdays during school term time, 9:30-11:00am, in the Presbyterian church hall on Tenby

Street. In Hawea we are holding one session during Term 1 on Wednesday 7 March, 9:30-11:00am at St. Ninian’s, Hawea Flat. Attendance and input on that day will determine plans for the rest of the year, so if you are a Hawea regular or newcomer please join us!

Started in 1990, each mainly music group is run by volunteers from a local church. Originating in New Zealand, there are now branches in Australia, the UK, South Africa, and the US. Wanaka Police have dealt with a variety of incidents over the past week. Here are some that you may find interesting or can help us with.

We are continuing to get reports of a male walking in various states of undress in different parts of Wanaka. We live in an area that has numerous tracks and pathways and can not be everywhere at once, contrary to common belief, so we rely upon you to call in any suspicious incidents.

The local Police and Volunteer Search and Rescue teams have been busy this week. A climber was air lifted from the Siberia Valley with a fractured wrist and a climber was air lifted from Mt Aspiring with a fractured ankle. A ‘tramper’ was also recovered following a distress beacon activation from Roses Saddle after injuring her back. This shows how good preparation and the right equipment can help you in times of need. Thank you and well done to all our SAR members and we wish those with injuries a speedy recovery.

A local 37 year old woman is being prosecuted for drink driving and has been suspended from driving. She was found driving only two days later and now has an additional charge and her vehicle has been impounded for 28 days.

Someone has either too many chickens or eggs! The Hawea Bowling Club and Community Centre were the victims of egg throwing over the weekend. If you know who may be responsible for this mindless act let us know.

We have received reports of prowlers at peoples’ homes. If you think someone maybe on your property and you do not want to look yourself please ring us. Call 111.

We have had only one crash on our roads this week, where the driver collided with a rock on the road at the Neck near Hawea. Either the rock or the driver was going a bit too quick. Please slow down and drive within your capabilities.

Freedom camping - have your sayThe Draft Freedom Camping Bylaw is open for submissions. The bylaw was introduced in 2011 but is being redrafted to bring it in line with the Freedom Camping Act which came into effect at the end of last year.The bylaw lets Council enforce rules about freedom camping to protect our beautiful environment from the minority of campers who take it for granted. There has been a drop in the number of freedom campers camping within the ‘No Freedom Camping Zones’ since the Act came in.
