introduction, the main part and a conclusion. First a speaker of the pro-motion makes the intro-duction and then a speaker of the against-motion makes their intro-duction. When they finish a speaker of the opposi-tion makes their main part and so on until both groups have debated through all of the three parts.

Finally Nicholas argues the possible improvements and discusses in details the debating skills of the students.

If that sounds interesting to  you  just  come  join  us next Friday in footlights.    Sebastian Heinekamp

What is it? We meet every Fri-day 12.15 at foot-lights with Nicholas Gracey, professor of philosophy, psychology and law, and like the name might tell you, we debate about current affairs. Topics we usually discuss are selected from the most recent current affairs events in the world by Nicholas. The latest discussion was regarding the USA election, the newly es-tablished government decisions and the prom-ises made,. Part of the debating was the global recession, and the spe-cific measures that need to be taken by all gov-

ernments to stop the re-cession having unprece-dented results.

How it works.

Nicholas chooses the topic and a relevant ques-tion. For example lets say the topic is the financial crises a possible question would be the “Are $500bn enough to save the economy???“. In the next step the present students are divided in two groups. One arguing for the motion and the other against it. Every group is given about ten minutes to plan the order and material of discussion

The debate itself includes at least three parts: the

THE HISTORY The  history  of  debating and  public  speaking starts with democracy in ancient  Greece.  The first  great  man  in  that context  was  Socrates, born 436 BC and a supporter of free debate, so when  Athens  was  conquered by Sparta, a absolute  monarchy,  he committed suicide.

In  the  roman  republic, being  a  good  public speaker was a necessity

to  accomplish  success and  fame.  Marcus  Tullus  Cicero  (10643  BC), a  lawyer,  philosopher and  politician,  became the  best  known  roman speaker  and  was  the only  one  how  ever  became  consul  without serving  in  the  army  before.  He  was  consul  63 BC.  After  fail  of  the  roman  empire  about  400 AD.,  the  civilisation  collapsed  and  so  public speech  and  debating

became unimportant.

“I‘ve got a dream“

Page 10: The Wall 3rd edition

When 1265  the  first British  parliament  summoned,  public  speech became  important  again but  in  1600  most  European  kings  stopped  having  a  parliament  and even  the  British  parliament only had the right to raise  taxes.  After  numerous  executions  because of  their  opinions  public speech and debating  lost importance  again  until  in 1755  a  group called “Ancient  Society  of  Cogers”  started  public  debates in a London tavern. The  name  derives  from the  philosophical  maxim “Cogito ergo sum” (I think therefore  I  am).  We should  think  of  it  as  “I debate  therefore  I  am.” We can claim  that  this  is the  oldest  free  speech forum  in  the  world.  The meetings had a forty minute opening  talk  on  the

events  of  the  past  week and  then  the  meeting was  open  to  all  participants  in  turn,  who  could express  any  view  about the  selected  current events.  Spies  went  to these  meetings  to  arrest the  people  that  expressed  free  opinions that  the  government  disliked    As  a  result,  the opening  speaker  would always make a “loyal reference”  to  the  monarch to confuse the spies! The p rac t ice   con t inued throughout  the  society’s history.  1815  Cambridge Union  Society  formed  at Cambridge  University  to allow  students  to  practice Parliamentary  style  of  debating.  It  was  closed  for being  too  controversial!  It soon,  however,  reopened. Oxford University students started the Oxford Union in 1823. These  two  societies have trained many famous

figures in the art of debate and  still  regularly  attract famous  personalities  to their debates.

BURN AFTER READINGBURN AFTER READINGBURN AFTER READINGBURN AFTER READINGDirected by: Joel Coen Starring: George Clooney, John Malkovich, Nobody is quite there in this new bright farce by the Coenplot is a smart excuse for a movie about nothing but appearing to be about a lot of things. Going backwards and forwards at the same time. Talk about "The Russians?" or planning to write a memoir. Brad Pitt is priceless and the innocence of his character is so believable that I wondered how many more surprises this actor has up his sleeve. He is a joy. George Clooney is also terrific and the Coen’s move through their crossed purposes with speed and elegance. I was totally immersedwhat was going on. John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins and the unnerving Tilda Swinton complete the package of this movie that feels as if it was made for the sheer pleasure of it.

sad and devastating to witness that the characters of this movie have become the role models of open minded individuals as teenagers, and starting to close their perspective of seeing life with delusions. Once again thanks to Disney cooperation for what it has done it to make money from fooling people by pretty and fancy deceptions. PRIDE AND GLORYPRIDE AND GLORYPRIDE AND GLORYPRIDE AND GLORY (15)

Directed by: Gavin O'Connor Starring: Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, and Jon Voight Sure this is similar to the bad cop, good cop scenario, but this offers something deeper and more exciting than I have seen in a cop thriller for a long time. The all-star cast, great writing and dramatic scenes will have you holding your breath thinking what's coming next. There are twists and turns in this that kept me on the edge of my seat, not able to go to the bathroom. The scene with the baby was so shocking to all the senses, but some might not be able to

handle it. I think because there are so many cop movies coming out, that people just come with the assumption that it's going to be nothing new. Let's think of it this way, every story now is just repeated, it's how you tell it that makes the difference. SAW VSAW VSAW VSAW V (18) Directed by: David Hackl Starring: Julie Benz, Meagan Good, and Shawnee Smith Given that the Saw films are notable for their unexpected plot twists, the fact that this was the most predictable one makes it difficult to see why it scored the "You won't believe how it ends" tagline. Otherwise, it's decent. It blows Saw III out of the water, but I don't feel it really compares to the other three. I can appreciate that they're trying to bring it back to what the original was all about; a brilliant plot with a couple of gory, the problem being, unfortunately, that the plot is fairly weak. The intensity of the torture scenes is greatly increased, though, by the rest period between them. As a horror film, this works, but don't expect Saw - and don't expect to be blown away by the ending, because it is nothing special. That said, if you're addicted to the Saw saga as so many of us are, there's no harm in going out to see it.

EASY VIRTUEEASY VIRTUEEASY VIRTUEEASY VIRTUE (PG) Directed by: Stephan Elliott

Starring: Jessica Biel, Ben Barnes, and Kristin Scott Thomas I went to the cinema expecting a cheesy one liner rich movie with a predictable plot and easy characters. However that is not what I got. I wanted to see this film because I needed something to cheer me up and this film was just what I needed. Easy Virtue is a very liberal adaptation of Noel Coward's play. Director Stephan Elliot has tried to make the film more contemporary and very distinct from the Merchant-Ivory school of film.

– QUANTUM OF SOLACEQUANTUM OF SOLACEQUANTUM OF SOLACEQUANTUM OF SOLACE (12A) – Directed by: Marc Forster Starring: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, and Mathieu Amalric This film could have been so good, but Marc Forster's clichéd and ham-fisted direction completely ruined it for me. To be fair, his handling of the quieter moments between the actions was adequate, but he clearly has no grasp of how direct action sequences, which are clearly central to any good Bond. I'm afraid the 'shake the camera and cut at least once a second' school of action direction doesn't really cut it. It's tragic really, as the setup and the stunts for the sequences looked pretty promising, but you had to look pretty hard to tell once Mr. Forster's hopeless direction kicked in. Such a waste. Quantum of Solace Quantum of Solace Quantum of Solace Quantum of Solace ---- ––––

This sequel to ‘Casino Royal’ has been possibly the biggest let down of the year.

The theme of a Bond that is motivated by vengeance destroys the enjoyment and excitement that is one of the biggest attractions of a Bond film. To add the disappointment there are no witty remarks coming from Bond before his drinks, no ‘Bond girls’ and no gadgets. The storyline is lost in a wavering confusion of 007’s duty, vengeance and a mix of characters and their roles. Which results in it all getting tangled up into one big action scene after another, with no clear idea of what is happening.

However some of the action sequences in this film do make up for the lack of a proper plot. They are fast action packed and they give you a sense of exhilaration.

If you like the idea of brutal and blood thirsty action with no suave or sophistication then this is the movie for you.
