Have a price in mind. Before you start visiting bridal boutiques, have arealistic budget in mind. Many brides often findthemselves spending far more than they hadoriginally intended to! A good starting point tothink about would be an amount that is around10% of the overall wedding budget.

Cut and paste. Before you arrange an appointment to try dresseson, you need to start with the basics. Cut outimages of dresses you like the look of from bridaland fashion magazines. You can also mix andmatch tops and skirts from a variety of images atthis stage to start building up a picture of whatyou can see yourself wearing for your wedding. This collection of images will provide a greatstarting point for any consultations you arrangewith your local suppliers.

Create a moodboard.Use the images you have selected so far as astarting point, and add in any pictures of cakes, flowers, accessories, table decorations and otherfinishing touches as this will really help definethe overall theme for your day. You will also needto consider your venue as this may also have abearing on the dress you decide on.

What style will work for you?Are you a contemporary, glamourous, traditional orretro bride? When you understand what lookworks best for you, it is easier for bridal stylists tohelp find the perfect dress for you. It is vitallyimportant to choose a style that you are

comfortable in, and also one that suits your figure.Have a look at our style guide to find the perfectstyle for your figure. Trust your instincts, but do letthe professionals guide you if necessary!

Many shades of white. When it comes to choosing your wedding dress, you will find that the traditional white can comein many different shades! Speak to the shopassistants as they will help you choose the perfecttone for your skin. Pure white looks amazing onbrides with an olive skin tone or choose an ivoryshade to complement the classic English rose skintones.

‘The One’.You will know when you have found the perfectdress to compliment the wedding of your dreams, and when you have found it, stop searching!perfection is impossible to beat! ♥

FindingThe One

Follow our step-by-step guide to findingyour dream wedding dress.

Important questions to ask whenbuying your dress:Can the style I have chosen be made tomeasure? Can I make any alterations to the style if Iwant to change the length of the train orstyle of sleeves for example? What is included in the price? Will I have topay extra for any alterations? How many fittings will I need to arrange? How far in advance do I need to order mychosen dress? How long will my dress take to arrive?

Secondtime

around

If this is your second time as abride, it may present you with theperfect opportunity to break awayfrom traditional wedding customs.

There is often a very real sense of freedom for abride and groom to be as creative as they want intheir planning in order to celebrate their weddingin a unique and personal way.

Your wedding outfit. There are a number of different possibilities tochoose from when it comes to deciding on youroutfit for your second wedding. It may be theopportunity to wear the fabulous fairytalewedding dress that you just couldn't afford firsttime around, or you might decide to opt for astunning white dinner suit. You could wear almostanything you like, but make sure you arecomfortable in your final choice as you will bewearing it for a long time! There are a number ofspecialist shops which could offer you a range ofspectacular outfits, or take advantage of thepersonal shoppers offered by a number ofdesigner and department stores.

Your wedding ceremony. If you are divorced from your previous husbandand would like a Church of England weddingservice, you need to contact your local parish. Insome circumstances a divorced person may notbe allowed to remarry in a church so you maydecide to choose to have your wedding in alicensed venue instead.

Your venue..There are all sorts of unusual venues where youmay decide to hold your wedding, includingtaking advantage of the opportunity to getmarried on the London Eye! You might decide touse your favourite restaurant to host yourreception, or there might be a different placewhich holds a special meaning for you which youwould like to share with your guests.

Very often, with a second wedding, anything goes!Remember to take the time to unleash yourcreative side and let your imagination run wild!

Do you want to be stylish yet different onyour wedding day? Then why not visit aCouture Bridal Dress Designer who willdesign a gown exclusively for you. Thepossibilities are endless and whateveryour fashion taste and personal style, aCouture wedding dress will enable you tochoose a design that will match your tasteand personality.

A Couture wedding dress will be made from thefinest fabrics, sewn with great craftsmanship andwith extreme attention to detail. The first step inthe Couture process will be to book anappointment for an initial consultation. This willallow you to share your dreams with the designer.Bring to the consultation all your ideas —photographs, magazines, or simply a verbaldescription of what you envision. Together youwill explore various options, including necklines, skirt shapes and fabrics. The designer will thenwork their magic, translating your ideas into arough sketch.

Once the sketch has been approved and yourmeasurements taken, the proper work begins. The sketch becomes the pattern for the calicotoile garment which is made out of a roughcotton fabric. The toile can be cut and pinnedallowing all the fitting problems to be ironed outand your personal blueprint emerges. The workdone at this stage reaps many benefits later on,reducing the number of alterations done on theactual fabric.Once work on the fabric begins you can expect anumber of fittings as the garment evolves. You

will be asked at this point to wear your bridallingerie to ensure the fit is just right. Beautifullinings make sure it feels as good as it looks. Andall the little details which make it uniquely yours– embroidery or beading, are gradually added.

Remember, when you come to the hem fittingyou will need to wear the shoes that you will bewearing on the day. It is also a good idea to takealong your tiara and jewellery so you get to seethe complete look.

Following your final fitting, your truly uniquegown will be pressed for collection – this is thelast step in the wonderful Couture process beforeyou wow your guests, leaving everyonespellbound on your special day! ♥

Whether you have two or twenty bridesmaids, their look is an important part of the day andchoosing the right dresses will help you all to feelfabulous and ooze confidence.

Know your styleIt may seem obvious, but you should always findyour dress before you even start thinking aboutyour bridesmaids. Once you know the style of yourdress and the theme of your wedding, it is mucheasier to start getting ideas of how you want yourbridesmaids to look and be confident that theirlook will fit in on the day.

Know your crowdAsk yourself this: Are my bridesmaids similar toeach other? What would they be mostcomfortable in? You must also consider size, age, shape, style and their colouring. You want to

flatter your bridesmaids and keep them happy onthe day. It is important to not give them free reignbut to let them know that they do have someinput into what they will be wearing. If you haveyoung bridesmaids make sure that they will becomfortable in what you have chosen for them asa wedding can be a tiring day for the little ones.

Fabulous fabricAnother important aspect of the bridesmaids’dresses is choosing the right sort of fabric for thetime of year. If you are having a summer wedding, try and opt for dresses made from lighter fabricssuch as silk georgette or crepe. If your wedding istaking place in the winter, bridesmaids canexperiment with layering and fabrics such assatin, organza and taffeta.

Accessorise!Don’t leave the accessories as an after thought, asthese will either make or break the look. Makesure you have enough time to get the right styleof headdress, shoes, earrings, necklaces etc to suiteach bridesmaid. ♥

ReligiousChurch of England A Church wedding stillproves to be a popular choice amongst couples, with a third of all weddings in England takingplace in Church, and three quarters of this takingplace within the Church of England. As well asyour local church, you can choose any churchoutside your parish that either you, your parents,or your grandparents have a connection with. Youcan also establish a new connection if you attendregularly over a six month period well before thebanns are published. Instead of going to theSuperintendent Registrar before the ceremony, banns (a notice of the proposed marriage) can beread in the parish church of both of the partnersor in the church where it has been agreed themarriage can take place. Banns must be read onthree Sundays before the ceremony.www.churchofengland.org

Roman Catholic Arrangements for a weddingin a Catholic Church are always made through thepriest in the parish in which you are living. Threemonths notice must be given to the priest. Bothyou and your groom must be free to marry, and one of you must have been baptised aCatholic in order to marry in aCatholic church. You will

also need to visit yourlocal superintendentregistrar at your localcouncil office to givenotice of your intentionto marry, and obtainyour licence.www.catholicchurch.org.uk

Jewish Weddings Jewish weddings fulfil botha religious and civil purpose, but you will stillneed two applications - one for your local registeroffice and one for the religious authority underwhich the ceremony will take place. Marriages cantake place in any synagogue, private house orother place as long as you and your partner areJewish and the ceremony is held under theauspices of a synagogue. The marriage must beregistered by the Secretary of the husband’ssynagogue. www.jmc-uk.org

Other Denominations In all other religions, religious marriage ceremonies can take place butyou must first give notice to the SuperintendentRegistrar, at your local Register Office. They willknow whether the building in which the ceremony

is to take place hasbeen registered.

Civil ceremonies can take place at anyapproved venue, which can include hotels, stately homes and castles!

If the building has not been registered, you canstill have a religious ceremony, but you will alsoneed to have a separate civil ceremony for themarriage to be valid under United Kingdom Law.If the building is registered, an authorised personmust be present at the ceremony to register themarriage. They will give you a marriage certificateon receipt of the fee. If there is no authorisedperson, the attendance of a Registrar is necessaryand this should be arranged with theSuperintendent Registrar.www.adviceguide.org.uk

CivilRegister Office In order to marry in a registeroffice, both you and your fiancé must give noticein person to the superintendent registrar at yourlocal council office. They will then issue you witha certificate of common notice. You will need thiscertificate to make a booking with the registeroffice to get the date you want. Weddings can bebooked no more than 12 months in advance, orwith no less than 17 days before the event.

Approved Premises Civil ceremonies can takeplace at any venue that has been approved for thepurpose. The venue must be regularly open to thepublic, and open-air premises will usually need apermanently built structure in order to beapproved. Visit www.direct.gov.uk to search for anapproved premise in the area you wish to marry. You will need to give notice of your intention tomarry to your local superintendent registrar, and

contact the local register office closest to thevenue you have chosen to book a registrar toconduct the ceremony.www.direct.gov.uk

OverseasOverseas WeddingsWeddings abroad are recognised as legal as longas they do not contravene UK laws. You shouldcontact the country's embassy or consulate foradvice to make sure you have the right documentsand find out when you will need to provide them.A number of countries require a minimumresidency period of between one and seven daysbefore you are free to marry there. It can often beeasier to have a civil ceremony in the UK followedby a blessing abroad due to the complicationssometimes involved in marrying in a differentcountry . www.fco.gov.uk

Legal Advice• You and your fiancé must both be at least

16 years of age. (In England and Wales, ifeither of you is under 18 you will need tohave permission from your parents orguardian).

approved premises.• The marriage must take place in front of

There are likely to be two parts to your weddingto organise, the wedding ceremony and thewedding reception. You may have your heart seton a traditional Church ceremony which is still afavourite choice for couples. If this is the casethen the reception should be planned around theChurch location. You will need to consider ease oftransport for yourguests from theceremony to thereception venue. Thesecond option is a civilwedding where yourceremony andreception will be held at a licensed venue. When you have decided on a Church or Civil

Ceremony there are certain factors to consider.Firstly, the venue must look and feel right to you.You may have a particular style of venue in mindfor example, a Castle, a Manor House orsomewhere dramatic or chic. The choices are

endlessand whereyou choosewill help you todictate the styleand theme of your wedding. The venue must be able to accommodate the

number of guests youare inviting so youshould have a good ideaof numbers before youstart looking around.

Importantly the cost ofthe venue must suit your

budget. Castles, country houses and stately homesare among the locations many dream of for theirbig day but consider your budget carefully.

Properly planned, your wedding reception willbecome one of the most joyous parties you willever host, so remember to savour every minuteand enjoy it! ♥

It’s traditional! There are a number of different weddingtraditions have been kept alive throughgenerations which are more focussed onthe wedding ceremony and reception. These traditions are thought to bringhappiness and good luck to the bride andgroom and their future life together.

Confetti Throwing confetti is thought to havedescended from ancient times, when guestswould throw grain over the newlyweds topromote fertility. These days confetti has evolvedinto coloured paper shapes bought to match thewedding theme. However, an increasing number ofvenues are deciding to ban confetti as it makestoo much mess. Blowing bubbles or laying downrose petals are environmentally friendly welcomealternatives.

The Cake The wedding cake was traditionallymade up of lots of little wheat cakes that werebroken over the brides head in order to bestowgood luck and fertility. The popular three-tier cakethat we tend to see now actually takes it'sunusual shape from the spire of Saint Bride'sChurch in London. The bride and groom shouldmake the first cut to signify sharing the rest oftheir life together. To ensure good luck follows thebride and groom throughout their life, every guestshould eat at least a crumb of the cake. If a singlewoman sleeps with a piece of wedding cake underher pillow, tradition suggests that she will dreamof her future groom that night.

Omens of good luck Walking was traditionallyseen as the best way of getting to the Church ontime, and there was also the possiblity that thebride would have more chance of spotting a luckyomen, or having the sun shine on her. Somecultures believe that rainbows, spiders, black cats, lambs and toads are thought to bring good luck ifthey are seen on the way to the wedding. Anotherpopular good luck omen is seeing a chimneysweep after the ceremony. This has become such apopular tradition, that it is possible to hire achimney sweep to attend your wedding.

When you return home for the first time ashusband and wife, tradition dictates that a newwife must enter her home through the front door, without tripping or falling, to ward off bad luck. This is why it has become customary for thegroom to carry his bride over the threshold.

The Bouquet Traditionally, the bride throws herbouquet backwards over her head and whoevercatches it is the next to get married. Similarly, insome countries the groom removes the bridesgarter and throws it over his head to the singlemales. Again the one who catches it is the next tomarry.

Buttonholes In Medieval times a Knight wouldwear his lady's colours as a symbol of his love. This has evolved to the present tradition of agroom wearing a flower that matches his bride'sbouquet to declare his love and represent unity. ♥

The Seating PlanThere are many different factors toconsider when it comes to the seatingplan, including whether or not you wantto assign seating in the first place.

When it comes to assigned seating, there are lotsof options to consider. Here are our top tips:

• Traditionally, the bride and groom sit at a longtop table with their parents, the chiefbridesmaid and the best man. However, manycouples are now opting for a round table, oreven a ‘sweetheart’ table for two. The weddingparty table should be placed where the brideand groom can see, and be seen by, as manyguests as possible.

• If parents are divorced, sit them close to theirnew partners, or ask them to host their owntables.

• You might want to put people next to othersthey know, or you might want to split them upa bit so that they meet new people. Generally, you should try and put families and work

colleagues together. However, if you knowthere are going to people attending who donot get on, then it is worth breaking withtradition to have a stress-free day.

• In order to keep a lively atmosphere throughout your weddingbreakfast, try to keep to an equal mix of bothsexes on each table.

• Avoid mixing age groups too much. Youngchildren should be seated with their parents.Older children should be seated either withtheir parents, or at a separate children’s table.

• Resist the temptation to have a 'leftovers' tableof all the people who didn't fit on the othertables. They will be aware of this and it couldmake them quite uncomfortable during thereception.

• Try to place pregnant, elderly and disabledguests and guests with small children wherethey have easy access to toilet facilities, or canescape if they need to (especially if a child hasstarted crying just as the speeches are aboutto start!)

• It might be worth showing a draft of yourseating plan to a few key members of thewedding party, so they can help you with anytricky decisions you may have to make.

Choosing the right weddingphotographer can seem daunting. There are a few key things to look outfor that will help you make the rightchoice. You need to feel personallycomfortable with your weddingphotographer – they’ll be capturingyour emotions and working closelywith your family and friends on yourspecial day. Some wedding photographers favour atraditional approach with others offering morecontemporary images. Some photographerswill be able to provide you with a combinationof styles. Make sure you see examples of theirrelevant work to get a good feel whether theyare the right choice for you.

It’s important that you understand exactly what you’ll begetting from your photographer. Although many now offerstraight-forward packages do not be afraid to clarifyexactly what your photographer will do on the day itselfand provide you with after the event. Do check you knowwhat’s included in the price and what will cost extra.

It’s worth arranging your photographer early in yourplanning as good photographers often get booked well inadvance. To form an idea of the types of photographs you want

captured take a look at as many examples as you can.Discuss this with your photographer and any friends whohave recently got married.Often friends or relatives who are keen amateurs offertheir services for free. Whilst it may be tempting totake them up for reasons of politeness or economy, you do not want to take risks with your preciousphotographs! If you want to guarantee highquality wedding photographs then you’reprobably best to leave the task to theprofessionals. To avoid causing offence to Uncle Bob,maybe you could offer him the important role of capturingcandid images of the guests through the day? ♥

Claire and Darren were married on 21stSeptember 2011 at Stubton Hall Nr Newark. They met through a mutual friend and have beeninseparable ever since. Here is Claire to tell youmore about their planning and special day:

“The proposal was very romantic, we werestaying overnight at Harts Hotel in Nottinghamand Darren had secretly organized a Caricaturistto be there, we had our picture drawn and whenhe turned it around for us to look at it was ofDarren kneeling down on one knee with ‘Will youmarry me’ written on it, I thought it was a jokeuntil Darren actually got down on one knee andgave me a heart shaped diamond ring and askedme to marry him, of course I said yes. It took usexactly one year to the day to plan our weddingand we choose to get married and have ourReception at Stubton Hall near Newark. Therewere many reasons for the choice, exclusivity, separate ceremony and reception rooms, accommodation for overnight guests and ofcourse the WOW factor which Stubton Hall hasbags of. The theme of the day was classic andelegant, white and green. What I remember mostabout the day, was the moment I was told it wastime to go, my heart was beating so fast, I wasjust so excited to be marring the man of mydreams. Our honeymoon was fantastic a trip of a

life time in America, we visited San Francisco, LasVegas, Niagara Falls and finally New York City.”A few final notes from Claire: “Make sure you havea good skin regime at least 6-9 months beforethe big day and also ensure you order yourbridesmaids dresses early as they can take up to16 weeks to arrive.”

On your birthday, which best describes yourpartners attitude? • Do they forget it? • Ask you what you want? • Give you a surprise?

When things go wrong, which is your partner most likely to do? • Laugh? • Go quiet? • Get upset?

Which word best describes you? • Reserved • Sociable • Assertive

4. Which of you will...• Send Christmas and birthday cards? • Pay bills? • Make arrangements for holidays?

Time for each other Working out how we spend our time togetherleads to surprising results. It can sometimes helpus to sit down and rethink our priorities. Duringlast week - or a recent week - how did you spendthe 168 hours? Make your best estimate for eachitem listed.

• Meals and sleeping, inc. getting ready for bed • Housework, preparing meals and cleaning up • Going to friends or having friends over • Work, training or studying, including travel time • Making time to talk to each other • Reading, television or social activities outside

the house

Now, discuss these questions with your partner: • How much of your activity is for you because

you enjoy it and how much do you do for otherreasons.

• How much time do you spend with otherpeople - enough, too much, far too much?

• Which are the times you are at your best? • Would you want to spend this 'quality time' in

another way? • How will being married make a difference to

your attitude to your work? • Or your attitude to your leisure? • What are your feelings about your partners

work and prospects?

Children What do you think is the ideal number of childrenfor you?

How many children will you be able to afford?

Have you discussed how you will bring up yourchildren?• Who should feed baby? • Bath and dress the baby? • Stay up late when they are ill? • Take them to school?

What sort of discipline should you have? • Strict but fair • Fairly strict • fairly relaxed • Relaxed but in control

Do you see children as: • Time consuming • A financial burden? • Demanding? • Not for me? • Enjoyable? • A big responsibility? • A completion of our family? • Not important? • A sign of our love?

What are your feelings when you think of yourselfas a parent?

Have you discussed when the best times to havechildren are?

Have a go at the following questions. Answer them on your own, and then discuss youranswers with your partner. Try to be as open and specific as possible and concentrate onthe questions that matter the most to both of you.

Your wedding ring is a public symbol of youreverlasting love and commitment to each other, yet many couples will leave buying them untilthe very last minute. Start thinking about yourwedding rings as soon as you start yourplanning as there are a few points to consider.Remember, they will be worn for the rest ofyour lives together.

Choosing the style, metal and colourYour style of wedding ring should reflect yourown personal style; it should also complimentyour engagement ring and can also be chosen tomatch your groom's ring if you wish. Weddingrings come in a variety of metals, colours andstyles. When choosing rings it’s best to go for acolour or style you’re not likely to get bored with,so it’s best not to follow high fashion. Consideryour personality and your engagement ring style –if your engagement ring is classic, vintage, unusual or even bespoke, then your wedding ringwill probably need to match. The Ancient Egyptian belief is that a circular ring was a sign of undying, never ending love, a love without a beginning or an end. Whatever you and your groom choose, it’s nice to have rings thatmatch in some way, either in their metal or pattern.

Choosing your ringsIt’s best to decide on a design at least two tothree months before the big day, although youwill need to allow longer for a bespoke design. This should give you plenty of time for choosing, measuring, sizing and resizing if need be. Agree on your budget and then spendsome time looking at what is available.

Specialist wedding ring makers allow you todesign your own rings and have them made – theultimate in wearing your own individual style. Aspecialist ring designer and maker will be able totranslate your style requirements into a uniquewedding ring or rings just for you. An alternativecould be personalising your rings with anengraving of the date of your wedding or apersonal message.

Make sure it fits!If you are buying your wedding rings from ajewellers then they will measure your fingers in-store to size the rings. If you choose to buy yourrings online, many companies will now send out aring measurer before you place your order so youcan be sure to order the correct size. Whenmeasuring, it’s worth remembering that yourfingers will swell up in the heat, shrink in the coldand get bigger as the day goes on. Most jewellersrecommend measuring in the afternoon when youare warm for a snug fit and then re-measuringagain in the morning when you are cool to ensurethe ring size is perfect. Achieving the correct fit isvital, as nothing else you own will compete withthe number of hours you will wear your wedding ring. ♥

When you visit a potential wedding venue there may be certainaspects that you absolutely love and some that you don’t lovequite so much! If you are concerned about the decor then thereis no need to worry, there are companies that can provideyou with services that can transform a typical functionroom into a breathtaking vision that you and your guestswill never forget.

If you are after a dreamy, romanticatmosphere why not go for swagsof tulle, clusters of white balloonsand twinkling fairy lights. You cancreate a sophisticated, timelesslook by using the same items butadd in sumptuous floralarrangements and candles.

Whatever look you want to create, there will be someone who can createit for you. But be mindful of thecanvas you are working with. If yourvenue is a historic building then youdon’t want to cover beautiful plushwalls with 12 ft banners. So don’tfight against what you have to workwith but consider yoursurroundings carefullyand work with them.

Places you may wish to decorate:• Doorways, entrances and exits (including

the driveway leading to the venue)• Walls and windows• The ceiling (particularly in a marquee)• Lighting on the dance floor• Fireplaces• Door handles and staircases• The Top Table• Guests’ tables & chairs

You should also consider the lighting of the room.Subtle Lighting defines the mood of a space, itcan create warmth, intimacy, romance and style.

Tables at your reception can be brought to lifewith the addition of simple tea lights or tallcandles mixed in with your floral arrangements.Up-lighting around a marquee or room willallow you to take control of the lighting, evenduring the day, transforming the atmosphereof your venue. You could even choose tomatch the colour of the lights to the overallcolour scheme of your day.

Specialist lighting can have a huge impacton your first dance, creating a truly romanticfeel to capture on video. Lighting can alsobe used to create a simple "chill out" areawhere people can relax and unwind awayfrom the disco. For even more ideas, speakto a lighting designer or your weddingplanner.

Be careful not to clutter the venue withtoo much decoration, less is usuallymore! A good venue decorator andlighting specialist will help and guideyou make the right choices to create astunning look so that when your guestsarrive, they think WOW. ♥

Your Wedding Gift Wish List! What a great opportunity tocreate a wish list of all yourmost favourite things! What shall you ask for? Well the gifts you choosewill depend on what stage of your life you are at.If you are a young couple just setting up hometogether for the first time you will need all thebasics: china, pots and pans, bed linen, towels andglassware etc.

For couples getting married in their thirties it ismore likely that you own a home or have livedtogether, so you probably already have most ofthe basic household items. If this is the case youmay wish to consider asking for more luxuriousitems like garden furniture, or state-of-the-artkitchen equipment. You could suggest a group offriends or relatives club together to buy the moreexpensive gifts between them.

Gift List Top Tips• Create your gift list at least three months

before the wedding day to take account oforder and delivery lead times.

• You should allow at least a monthto compile your list, and it’sunlikely that you will choose allyour items in one session.

• Cater for all budgets whenchoosing items for your list. Youdon’t want anyone to feelpressured into buying a gift theycannot afford.

• Include a wide variety of gifts soyour guests have plenty tochoose from.

• Try and think ahead – you maynot be interested in a fancydinner service now but itcould come in useful later on.

• If you choose to compile alist at a large departmentstore, make sure you signup as early as possible.

• Keep a note of all thepeople who bought you agift and what they boughtyou – this will help withyour Thank You notes.

• Consider taking outwedding insurance tocover all your gifts.

The CarIt is important to book your transport about 6 months aheadand visit car companies that are local so that they are familiarwith the route and have a good idea of traffic conditions.Cars usually have white ribbons running along the front but

these can be changed to match the theme of the day if you wish. The price usually includes a complementary bottle ofchampagne; however there may be extras, such as requestedmusic, for an extra charge. You also need to know how many carsyou will need: Which car will take you, which car will take thebridesmaids. As the bridesmaids usually arrive before the bride itis advisable to have separate cars that leave at different times.

The CarriageIf you really want to go for the Wow factor on your wedding day, then a horse drawn carriage is for you. The carriages themselvescan range from the classic Landau to fairytale replicas. Again, it isvery important to visit the carriage company well in advance soyou can view the carriages and decide what you want for the day. You must remember that the horses will have to stand still for

long periods of time and traffic on the road can prove stressfulfor them so choose a reputable company that has goodexperience with horses. Finally, don’t forget that horses movemuch slower than cars, so make sure you leave enough time toget to the church and that the roads are suitable for the ride. ♥

Wedding cars have beengetting brides to the church instyle for years. It’s one aspectthat usually stays true totradition, with brides optingfor vintage or classical carssuch as a Rolls Royce, Daimler,Bentley or Limousine fortransport. However, for themore adventurous bride thereare other alternatives that aresure to make an impression asyou pull up to the church.Other options include: Horsedrawn carriage, VW Vans,Mustangs, Lamborghinis andeven Beetles or Minis.

Hiring a period vintage coach as partof the ambience you are creating foryour wedding can introduce anenjoyable dimension to theproceedings as well as being a costeffective solution to the transportationrequirements of your big day.

Whilst the vehicles themselves can oozenostalgia, it is important that you check out thelicensing and insurance credentials of theirowners. If you are intending to carry more thaneight passengers and you are paying for theservice, then the provider should have theappropriate Operators Licence issued by theTraffic Commissioner, don't be afraid to ask aboutit. The vehicle should also carry a PassengerCarrying Vehicle MOT Certificate and theappropriate insurances. The driver too should bethe holder of a full Passenger Carrying Vehicle(PCV) driving licence. That said, the operator will usually be willing to

discuss your requirements on a practical basis.Your needs may be to move a large group in onebudget movement or perhaps convey the brideand bridesmaids to the Church first followed by amovement of say close family and friends to thereception afterwards. A vintage double decker busmay be the answer to your needs or perhaps themore defined luxury of a smaller 1950's single

decker touring coach with sumptuous seating forup to 40 and a beautiful art deco interior.

Operator owners are usually very proud of theirperiod icons and as such will often provide thevintage coach for the initial transfers whilst thelate night return journey will be aboard a modernvehicle where the benefits of air suspension andair conditioning will be more sympathetic tothose guests who are by then feeling a littleworse for wear.

One point to remember is that vintage vehiclesdo not have the benefit of power steering andmay in fact require a greater turning area in whichto manoeuvre than that of a much larger modernvehicle, so do bear this in mind when planningyour itinerary and looking at venues. ♥

Your wedding stationery will give yourguests the first hint of the style and colourtheme of your wedding. You may be lookingfor something quite simple andcontemporary, elegant and romantic orelaborate and bold – whatever you decideto go for, you won’t be disappointed withthe choice available. So what items are youlikely to need?

Save the Date Cards – to make sure all your familyand friends keep their diary free on the chosen day.

Invitations – Remember that you will only need oneper family but it’s always wise to order a few extrajust in case.

Reply Cards – these can be included with yourinvitations to encourage a prompt response fromyour guests.

Order of Service – Usually you would give one to

each guest at a church wedding but when thinkingof numbers consider friends coming to watch whomay not be invited to the day time.Table Plan/Place Cards/Menus – can all be designedto match the colour and theme of your weddingand add that bit of luxury and formality to theevent.

Favours For Your Guests – Bomboniere or weddingfavours have traditionally been given to weddingguests for many years. Way back in historybomboniere were small trinket boxes containingsugar cubes or delicate confections whichsymbolised wealth of the family. Years later thesugar cubes were replaced with 5 almonds whichsymbolised fertility, wealth, longevity, health andhappiness.Today, the choice for wedding favours is endless

from petite boxes of chocolates to alcoholicminiatures. Becoming more popular are charityfavours where you can donate money to a favouritecharity on behalf of your guests. ♥

An artistic florist will be able to suggest a range of stunning designs foryour wedding bouquet and floralarrangements that complement yourdress, the theme of your wedding andthe ceremony venue.

Make sure you are prepared for your consultation.Try to take with you samples of the fabric that willmake up your dress, and colour swatches for yourgown, the bridesmaids’ dresses and groom'sformalwear, as the florist will need thisinformation to help them prepare ideas ofbeautiful arrangements for you.

The traditional colours for a bridal bouquet areivory and white, but don't be afraid to add a hintof colour for that element of understatedsophistication. The groom's buttonhole should beworn on his left lapel, and should echo the bride'sbouquet. This is to celebrate the tradition of a

Knight wearing his Lady's colours to display hislove.

The ushers and groomsmen should wear a slightlydifferent flower on their lapel, but it should alsofeature in the main bouquet. Bridesmaids’ flowerswill also differ from your bouquet, but should stillcoordinate with the general floral theme, asshould corsages for the mothers and buttonholesfor the fathers.

Flowers could be selected for personal reasons,or because of what they traditionally represent, i.e.Lilies represent majesty, roses symbolise love, freesias symbolise purity, and baby's breathrepresents innocence. Silk flowers are becomingmore popular too, enabling you to chooseexquisite imitators that will last a lifetime. Buyingflowers in season can save you money, so pickflowers according to the time of year and be eco-friendly too!

It is always a good idea to request that yourflorist give you an itemised bill in advance, andmake sure that you in turn supply the florist withthe names, addresses, and times for delivery of yourbouquet, buttonholes, corsages and floralarrangements. You'll need a number of other floralpieces for your wedding, including displays for thealtar, centrepieces for reception tables, sprays for

candelabra, corsages for those who assist withvarious reception duties, andfloral "tokens" for specialguests. Ask your florist forguidance. Their artistry, knowledge of wedding protocol

and ability to listen to yourneeds will ensure that you'll

An artistic florist will be able tosuggest a range of stunning designsfor your wedding bouquet and floralarrangements that complement yourdress, the theme of your wedding andthe ceremony venue.

But where should you start? Ideally, you shouldbook your florist as soon as possible as they canbe booked up with weddings all summer. This isespecially important if you are planning a largewedding with an abundance of flowers. There aremany ways to go about choosing your florist, fromasking your friends and family forrecommendations, visiting suppliers at weddingfairs or researching them on the internet.

Whatever method suits you best, make sure youarrange a consultation with a shortlist of yourfavourite choices and take it from there!

Inspiration Have a look at wedding photographsfrom friends and family members, and tear outany images you like in bridal magazines andnewspapers. Your florist will also have lots ofportfolios and magazines for you to look throughwhen you visit them. You should also take anysamples of fabric or colour swatches that you areplanning to use, as well as ideas about the overalltheme of the wedding as this will all help yourflorist design the floral decorations you havedreamed about.

What about the budget? Be honest about yourbudget from the start. There is no point being shy

about it as your florist could end up suggesting allsorts of extravagances that you simply can'tafford. For a limited budget, try to stick toseasonal flowers as these can work outconsiderably cheaper! Make sure you get yourorder confirmed in writing as soon as you can, andlook out for any hidden costs such as deliverycharges or vase and accessories hire as they canreally add to the final costings. It is also importantthat you give your florist a breakdown of youritinerary, timings and addresses for delivery, especially if things are being delivered to anumber of different addresses.

What floral arrangements are required? You willneed to arrange a bridal bouquet, bouquets foryour bridesmaids, buttonholes and corsages. Youwill also need a number of other floral pieces foryour wedding, including displays for the altar, centrepieces for reception tables, sprays forcandelabra, and any floral gifts for special gueststo show your thanks.

Final thoughts. The number of meetings you willhave with your florist will vary depending on youractual requirements, but it is important to have atlest two or three face to face meetings before thebig day. Some florists may be willing to hold oneof these meetings at your intended venue todiscuss exactly where the larger arrangementswill look best and draw the eye. Ask your florist forguidance throughout the planning stages. Theirartistry, knowledge of wedding protocol andability to listen to your needs will ensure that youget good value for your money, and have theperfect floral accents to enhance your weddingday. Just make sure you have your florist's mobilenumber handy in case of floral emergencies onthe day!

Choosing your seasonal bouquets and floralarrangements

AutumnSeptember to early November is a beautifulseason in nature when the colours of flowers andleaves are changing naturally. Choose fromshades of orange, brown and red for a perfectautumnal wedding.

Orange: This is a colour that has moretraditionally been associated with bright, vibrantand exotic Eastern weddings, but it is becoming

more commonplace in Western weddings withshades of orange being chosen. Think Calla Lilieswith their burnished brown-orange tints thatreflect the colours of an autumn sunset.

Brown: While a common colour in nature, brown issurprisingly less common when it comes toflowers. Choose from Alstroemeria, Kangaroo Paw,Chrysanthemum, Cosmos, Hypericum berries andRoses. You could also use brown foliage to accentyour floral arrangements. Far more common thanbrown flowers, but looks truly stunning inautumnal displays.

Red: A great colour for weddings as it symbolisesstrength and passion (think red roses!) Red foliageis also very dramatic and red berries or red leavedPhotinia look fantastic with red flowers or almostblack foliage. Popular red flowers to consider areGerbera, Anthurium, Freesia and Amaryllis.

Other Autumn flowers to consider include Dahlias,Leucospermum, Strelitzia, Crocosmia and Nerine.

WinterWinter flowers are often the most striking, withtheir bold colours and unique shapes. They cancaptivate your celebration with their seasonalmagic. Purples and blacks are very popular at thistime of year, as are reds, greens, and whites.

Purple: Eryngium (also known as Sea Holly) hasbeen around for centuries. It is a very strikingflower like a purple raspberry surrounded by athistle collar. They can look striking in any modernarrangement, are very popular with couples ofScottish descent, or can make an ideal masculinebuttonhole.

Black: There are not many flowers that are trulyblack, they are normally either a very dark red orwine-purple. Most popular are Roses or CallaLilies, or you could consider flowers with a blackcentre like Star of Bethlehem and Anemones. There is also a wide range of black foliage thatcan also look really effective such as darkCordyline leaves or Cotinus.

Other Winter flowers to consider include Amaryllis,Freesias, Phalaenopsis Orchids, Oncidium Orchids,Gerbera, Lisianthus and Heliconia. ♥

Your first dance together as husband and wife is oneof the most eagerly anticipated parts of your weddingreception. You may have already chosen the musicyou want to dance to, but have you thought abouthow you are going to dance to it? You may decidethat you want to take some dance lessons and haveyour first dance professionally choreographed, butwhat does this involve?

There are a number of things to think about when itcomes to planning your first dance lessons:

• Decide on a song• Think about the style of the routine you would like:

funny, traditional, cheeky, romantic or sophisiticated• Remember to show your choreographer your

wedding dress so the routine can be designed totake into account what you will be wearing

• Plan the timetable for your dance lessons. Youshould aim to start your lessons 5 to 8 weeks priorto your wedding

• Make sure you wear something comfortable foryour lessons, but remember to wear your weddingshoes for at least one of the practices!

When you start considering what type of music andentertainment you would like at your wedding, youwill realise that the choice is endless. Shouldyou go for a DJ, a live singer, a band or acombination – whatever you decide make surethey are going to hit the right note to ensureyou have the party of a lifetime.

Arranging your wedding music really should be high priority aspopular DJs, bands and singers get booked up well in advance.Ideally you should hear the DJ, singer or band before you book themto make sure they will create the right atmosphere for you andyour guests.Your DJ or band should discuss with you what type of music you

would like for your first dance and a good DJ or bandleader willgather all the guests together to make it a very special time.

Close-up magic can provide the perfect ice breakerfor a wedding reception. A good magician will minglewith your guests performing a range of miracles infront of their eyes. They will move from group togroup engaging guests with their magic and leave themwith something shared to talk about, even if they have justmet. An experienced wedding magician will know how to

He can provide a show for eachtable during the wedding breakfast, entertain ona larger scale while your reception room is beingtransformed from day to evening, or engage yourevening guests on their arrival. Speak to yourwedding magician about how long you would likethem to stay, some will offer entertainment for acouple of hours, while others will be moreflexible and offer a range of different packagesdesigned to best suit your plans.

Fireworks are becoming an increasingly popularand spectacular finale to the day's events. Whendeciding whether you wish to pursue this uniquespectacle, there are some basic rules to follow. The venue must of course be of a suitable size, and the owner will need to give their permission. The larger the display, the larger the display area

Why not end the eveningwith a magnificent fireworks display?

required, and a site visit with the company isessential. There are many alternative displays available,

ranging from just a firework drawing to a fulldisplay and, ideally your firework company shouldbe offering many variables and clearly setting outall the costs involved. Pictures in fireworks can bedesigned and personalised to the bride andgroom, these can be visually stunning, last forabout a minute and are a novel way to end themain show. If the noise due to large explosions isan issue, speak to the company as they should beable to offer a reduced noise display that is stillcolourful and spectacular.

Firework displays should provide good value formoney. Ask your chosen firework company toshow you references from previous clients, meetwith them to discuss your requirements and askfor a quote. You should also ask them to provide acopy of their insurance documents

Finally, do inform your photographer/videographer in advance about the display sothey can be prepared to capture the spectacle. Ifthey require any specialist knowledge on thefilming of fireworks, the firework company shouldbe able to assist. ♥

It is becoming increasingly popular for thelast night of freedom to last a weekend, oreven longer so make sure you discuss withthe chief bridesmaid or best man whattype of party you really want.

• Draw up list of people to invite.• Select a town/venue that's easily accessible

to everyone.• Decide on what kind of event you think would

be best for the people involved. • Set the itinerary and make inquiries and

provisional bookings.

• Don’t go too overthe top. Youmight like theidea of a weekin Barcelona, but noteveryone willwant to spendthat amount oftime or money. Ifyou want to dosomething big, stick toclose friends only.

• Create and send out invites.• Give out your email address and mobile number

to all the guests and be available to answerqueries about directions, accommodation, etc.

• Pre-book everything you can and confirm inwriting or by email, especially foraccommodation, and reconfirm the day before.

• Make sure everyone knows exactly where you'remeeting eg which bar of the hotel, whichentrance of the station? Give a contact numberfor last-minute changes.

• Make sure everyone knows roughly how muchthe do will cost, and whether they'll be helpingto cover the bride's/groom's costs. Let everyoneknow how and when payment is to be made.

• Have a fall-back meeting place for late arrivalsor people who get lost.

• Think ahead about how everyone will begetting home. Do you need to arrange transport, book taxis, or send younger members of theparty home earlier?

Talking about the budget won’t be the most romantic conversation you’regoing to have when it comes to planningyour big day, but overspending isn’t veryromantic either.

One of the first things you need to do when youstart planning your dream wedding is decide who’spaying for what. The most important thing toconsider is to plan the type of wedding you canrealistically afford. It is not ideal to start married lifein debt. Remember, it is how you spend your moneythat counts, not how much you have to spend.

Traditionally, the father of the bride handled themajority of the expenses, with the groom chipping

in for ceremony fees anda suitably fabulous, surprisehoneymoon. But, times arechanging. Manycontemporary couples choose topay for the bulk of their wedding themselves,or even to split the costs three ways – betweenthem and both sets of parents. The question forwho pays for what really comes down to who iswilling and able.

The Bride• Wedding gift for groom• Wedding ring for groom• Bridesmaids’ dresses• Gifts for Attendants• Hen Party

The Groom• Wedding gift for bride• Bride's rings• Banns, Wedding Licence and
