Mares with

More Sugar Badger

R. L. Underwood, an AQHA Hall of Fame member, be-lieved very strongly in the philosophy that “Great Horses like Great Men, Have Great Mothers.” This philosophy was very strong in the Underwood breeding program

quarter horses. The late historical writer, Bob D enhardt, credited

Underwood’s success to his strong band of broodmares and his inbreeding program. The Underwood broodmare band included such individuals as Betty Lou, a winning halter mare and Bonnie Blue, a full sister to the great Grey Badger II.

Underwood’s success through a strong broodmare

band can be seen in Cutter Bill. Cutter Bill was the result of Underwood mating his great show stallion Buddy Dex-ter with one of his show mares, Billie Silvertone. Billie Silvertone was reportedly a very good halter and cutting

two AQHA Champions in Cutter Bill and Smutty Bill, an enviable record for any broodmare.

But that doesn’t mean that all great broodmares have

broodmare that never had the opportunity to perform. These individuals fall into a special category because they were not performers, but because of their strong pedigree or conformation, they are given the opportunity too prove their value as a broodmare.

Joe Kirk Fulton’s great broodmare, Sugar Badger,

was one of those unshown mares that has made a great impact on the modern quarter horse. Sugar Badger is the dam of Peppy San Badger, the leading sire of cut-ting horse money earners. But as we delve into the life

only a part of her story.

Fulton, a Rancher and businessman from Lubbock, Texas bought Sugar Badger as a weanling. He pur-chased Sugar Badger from Alvis Townley, her breeder

-phreys was the long time manager of the famed 6666’s Ranch of the Burnett Estate.

Fulton reports that he bought Sugar Badger as a

broodmare prospect because of her sire. She was a daughter of Grey Badger III, a stallion that Fulton would own and stand. We’ll let Fulton explain, “Grey Badger III foals were excellent cow horses. Most of them would buck with you, if you laid off them for 3 or 4 days, espe-cially on a cool morning. But they were darn good cow horses. In fact, we thought they were about as good a ranch horse as we had ever raised.” Fulton went on to explain that they used Grey Badger III for about 10 years on their ranch and that he improved the quality of ranch horses they raised and used.

Fulton certainly didn’t waste anytime making Sugar

Badger a broodmare. She was foaled in 1959 and -

The next phase in the life of Sugar Badger came in

the fall of 1965 with her third foal by Aledo Bar. Fulton had just hired a new trainer named Wayne Pooley. Fulton had decided to sell a few mares and one of the candidates was Sugar Badger. Pooley and Fulton were

side of Sugar Badger.

Pooley recalled that fall Texas day this way, “Sugar Badger was out in the pasture with the other mares. I really liked the baby at her side. I thought she was an

she would mature into a really good performance horse, and I felt she had some potential as a halter horse. But

By Larry Thornton

Page 14 THE WORKING HORSE • DECEMBER 2010

Page 15: The Working Horse, December 2010

at that time I didn’t know how much, but I knew she would be a pretty mare.

K Bar was the beginning of an outstanding produce record for Sugar Badger.

Pooley found Honey K Bar to be a

very special individual.S He didn’t show her until she was a two-year-old but she was Grand Champion Mare

He showed her at halter at two and then at three he added western pleasure to the sched-ule. While showing her at halter and pleasure, he started her on cattle. Honey K Bars made

-ance in the cutting arena that fall at the NCHA Futurity.

Pooley remembers the

futurity this way; “I recall

Will Rogers Coliseum. She really looked pretty just like when I was showing her at halter. Someone asked me what I was showing in the Cuttin’ Futurity and I said, I’m showing this mare. And they said, How’s she doing?’ I said, ‘She’s doing pretty good. She hasn’t been shown yet, but we’ll see how good she’s doing when we show

gained the respect of everybody in Fort Worth.” Pooley showed Honey K Bar in halter, pleasure and

cutting as a four year old. During that campaign, she earned her 45 cutting points in the AQHA and retired due to an injury. She ended 1969 as the fourth leading halter horse in the nation and the sixth leading cutting horse in the nation.

Pooley remembers one show in particular as a key ex-

ample of the ability of Honey K Bar to excel as a versa-

road trip and it was in Denton, Texas. This show was of-

the best record in halter and three performance events. Honey K Bar had won the Grand Champion Mare title and was waiting for the pleasure and cutting classes.

Pooley decided to try for the all around and so he en-

tered Honey K Bar in the barrel racing class. He asked his son Don to ride the mare in this class with he idea

to lope the mare through the barrel pat-tern. Don declined to ride the mare

because he thought he would look “silly” loping her through

the pattern. So Wayne loped her around the

barrels. She won the All Around saddle

with wins in cutting, pleasure and the Grand Champion Mare title. This was typical of Honey K Bar, she would be Grand Champion in the morning

and win the plea-sure and cutting in

the afternoon.

Pooley added this about the mare, “Honey K

Bar was just an outstanding

professional trainer, she is one of the very few horses that never regressed in her training. She was at least as good or better on every succeeding day. This is very

unusual for any horse and she will always have a fond place in my heart.”

Honey K Bar went on to be the dam of several AQHA

point earners., including My Syntariat and Mr Venture Point, both ROM racehorses and My Cool Cat, an AQHA halter point earner.

Sugar Badger foaled Bar’s Promise in 1967. Bar’s

Promise was sired by Bar Shadow by Aledo Bar and she

Lucky Promise, an AQHA Superior Western Pleasure Horse. The next year Miss Windy Dawn by Aledo Bars was foaled. This is another mare that Pooley fondly remembers. She was well on her way as a show horse when an injury ended her career. She ended up with 5 halter points and 7 cutting points.

Gray Badger II was the paternal grandsire of Sugar Badger, being the sire of Grey Badger III. Photo Courtesy of the Burnett Ranch, LLC.

Sugar Badger foaled The Emperor in 1970, and is still owned by Fulton. The Emperor was sired by Gay Bar King and earned 45 AQHA Cutting points and an NCHA

Mr Bar Gold Jr by Mr Bar Gold was Sugar Badger’s

next foal. He earned 1 halter point, with 11 pleasure points and 1 hunter under saddle point. Mr Bar Gold was a son of Gay Bar King.

The next two foals were the unshown Counter Com-

mand, a sorrel gelding and Sweet Player, a sorrel mare. Counterplay, an AQHA Champion son of Sugar Bars and the Leo mare Rosa Leo sired them both.

Sugar Badger produced her greatest claim to fame

in 1974 when she foaled Peppy San Badger by Mr San Peppy. Peppy San Badger or “Little Peppy” as he is called by all that know him, went to the King Ranch to be trained and ended up becoming the property of the King Ranch. He was the 1977 NCHA Futurity winner, 1978 NCHA Derby winner, 1980 NCHA Reserve Open World Champion and the 1981 NCHA Finals Champion. All of these honors netted Peppy San Badger a spot in the

“Little Peppy” has become the leading sire of cutting

horse money earners with his foals earning over $19 million in the arena. He is the sire of many great cutting horses with foals like Dual Pep, Clays Little Peppy, Rum Squall and Pop A Top Pep to name just a few.

Sugar Badger went back to the court of Counterplay

for her next foal. That foal was the sorrel gelding Twin Badgerwho earned his fame outside of the cutting arena. He has earned 68 points in heading and heeling. He was the seventh place high point heading horse in 1983.

Flaming Sugar and Rediscovery were the 1976 and

1977 foals out of Sugar Badger and sired by Fulton’s great racing stallion Flaming Jet. These two daughters of Sugar Badger are unshown and unraced in the AQHA.

Sugar Badger didn’t produce a foal in 1978 but she

Peppy has no show record but he is the sire of Peppy Star Rio, the winner of such prestigious cutting events as the NCHA Super Stakes and the NCHA Derby.

the last phase of her productive life. Fulton and the legendary B. F. Phillips Jr. became partners in a lease agreement to breed Sugar Badger to the great cutting horse sire Doc 0’Lena. Sugar Badger produced the foals Docs Little Sugar and Lenas Little Sugar.

Docs Little Sugar was sold in the Heritage Western

Sale in 1984 for $75,000. She went on to become a -

cate of Ability holder with $6,903 earnings. Lenas Little Sugar was the last foal out of Sugar

Badger. A nurse mare raised her after the death of Sugar Badger. Lenas Little Sugar was in cutting training when B. F. Phillips died in 1987. She was never shown, and Fulton has retained Lenas Little Sugar for his broodmare band.

The pedigree of Sugar

Badger carries some very good quarter horse founda-tion breeding and some interesting outcross thor-oughbred blood. Her sire Grey Badger III was foaled in 1947 and bred by Oscar Cox.

Grey Badger III was

an A rated racehorse and ROM on the track. Franklin Reynolds reported in “The Burnett Horses,” The Quar-ter Horse Journal, February 1957, that Grey Badger III was bought by the Burnett Estate as a potential re-placement for his sire, Grey Badger II.

It must be noted that

Grey Badger III not only produced some very good ranch horses but that he has left his mark as a broodmare sire. His impact as a broodmare sire can be seen in his other very famous grandson Two Eyed Jack. Two Eyed Jack was out of Triangle Tookie a daughter of Grey Badger

III. Two Eyed Jack is a leading sire of ROM performance horses and the all time leading sire of AQHA Champions with 119. His record of 119 AQHA Champions may never be broken.

Walter Merrick bred Grey Badger II. The Reynolds’

story tells us that Grey Badger II came to the Burnett Ranches as an 8 year old. He lived his life on the Ranch siring ranch horses and some good show and racehors-es. He is the sire of such AAA runners as Coe Badger 89, Sumerall’s Bay Badger and Badger’s Grey Lady.

Grey Badger II’s impact can be seen in the rein-

ing horse industry through such descendant as Easter Gentlemen.Easter Gentleman is out of Bobbin Badger by Grey Badger II.

Walter Merrick’s foundation sire Midnight Jr sired Grey

Badger II. Midnight Jr. reportedly won all 16 of his match races while owned by Merrick. Merrick once reported that he bred his great race mare Lena’s Bar to Jet Deck, because Jet Deck was a descendant of Midnight Jr. When Lena’s Bar was bred to Jet Deck, she produced

the legendary racehorse and sire Easy Jet and his full brother Jet Smooth.

Midnight Jr. was the last foal of Midnight, a son of

Badger by Peter McCue. Badger only sired one son and that was Midnight. The dam of Midnight Jr was Salty by Billy The Tough by A. D. Reed by Peter McCue.

The dam of Grey Badger II was Grey Annie by Billy

Billy The Tough and 4 X 5 X 4 linebred to Peter McCue. The dam of Grey Badger III was Mary Greenock,

a thoroughbred mare by Greenock. Greenock was a

Porter by Sweep by Ben Brush. Greenock’s dam was Starella by the imported *Star Shoot.

The dam of Mary Greenock was a thoroughbred mare

named That’s Mine. That’s Mine was sired by Phalaros and she was out of That’s That by High Time.

When the Grey Badger name comes into the conver-

sation, the cold backed disposition of this line seems to automatically come into the picture. So what kind of disposition did Sugar Badger have? Pooley talked about Sugar Badger’s disposition this way, “She was easy to handle, but she was pretty snorty. You didn’t have to rope her to catch her; you could catch her like any other mare, just as long as she knew you wouldn’t hurt her. She was a mare I enjoyed handling.”

Pooley continued, “I never did ride her. But when Joe Kirk and I were discussing the future of Honey K Bar, he

mare (Sugar Badger) was a tough mare to ride.’ Fulton told me that Jack Adkins broke the mare and he didn’t like her, because she was a pretty tough broncy mare. Joe Kirk thought that the mare might transmit that quality to her foal. That didn’t bother me, because a horse that is a little snorty doesn’t bother me. I thought that the

and a little more grit and it did.” Pooley explained that he has seen this same grittiness

and snortiness in all of the Sugar Badger foals that he has been around. He even credits this gritty disposition as a possible secret to some of Little Peppy’s success as a cutting horse and sire.

Sugar Townley was the dam of Sugar Badger. She

was sired by Lucky Jim by Redwood P-191 Redwood was sired by Madway Tenacity by Bull Dog Tenacity. Bull Dog Tenacity was sired by the imported thoroughbred *North Star III. The dam of Redwood was Miss Anson by Harmon Baker, a son of Peter McCue. Thus Lucky Jim was 4 X 5 linebred to Peter McCue.

The dam of Lucky Jim was Little Mother. The sire of

Little Mother was Tom (Scooter) by Midnight. This makes Sugar Badger 4 X 5 linebred to Midnight. Little Mother was owned at one time by R. L. Underwood and was also known as the Y Ranch Quarter Mare. She was the dam of Star Light, who was the dam of the great mare

Billie Silvertone. Red wood and Little Mother were both used in the R. L. Underwood breeding program. This makes Sugar Badger 6 X 7 X 6 X 6 X 7 linebred to Peter McCue.

The dam of Sugar Townley was the H. J. Clark mare,

whose breeding is unknown. Sugar Townley was the dam of only six foals with 3 of them being performers. She was the dam of two AQHA Champions in Bars Choice and Aledo Bar Ben. Her third performer was Mr Choice Bar. He was shown only as a yearling and thus wasn’t old enough at that time to earn points. Her other foals were Sugar Loot by Oil Loot, an unshown stallion, and an unshown mare named Little Paducah by Captain Nero.

One of the outstanding characteristics of a top brood-

mare is the ability to produce good foals when bred to different sires. Wayne Pooley found this to be true in Sugar Badger. He explains, “I think you could have bred her to any horse in the world and without fall she would have produced a good foal.”

Pooley went on to explain that Sugar Badger was not

an impressive mare to look at, but she stamped her foals with “with ideal conformation as far as structural sound-ness goes and conformation as it is related to perfor-mance.”

Despite the success of Sugar Badger when bred to a

pattern” for her and her dam Sugar Townley when mated with Aledo Bar. Aledo Bar was the 1959 AQHA High Point Halter Stallion. He lived just ten short years and produced 17 AQHA Champions and sired three AQHA High Point Halter Horses. His halter champions were Aledo Bar’s Lady, Aledolita Bar and Lady Gaines. Aledo Bars was sired by Steel Bars by Three Bars. The dam of

Aledo Bar sired Honey K Bar, Miss Windy Dawn, Bar’s

Choice and Aledo Bar Ben when bred to Sugar Badger and Sugar Townley. But this isn’t the end of this nicking pattern.

Phantom K Bar was sired by Phantom Bar, a son of

Three Chicks by Three Bars. The dam of Phantom Bar

sired by Gay Bar King, a son of Three Bars. The dam of Gay Bar King was Gay Widow, a daughter of King

stallion on Sugar Badger by Grey Badger III. Bar’s Promise is a variation of this nicking pattern,

she is sired by Bar Shadow by Aledo Bar. The dam of

Sugar Badger to Mr Bar Gold is another variation as Mr Bar Gold was a son of Gay Bar King, a Three Bars/King

The phenomenal success of Peppy San Badger de-

serves our attention at this point in our story. Little Peppy has proven to be a very prepotent sire with many of his colts carrying his distinctive color and blaze face that

Many times when you study the pedigrees of prepo-

type of linebreeding or inbreeding. This is the case with Leo, the paternal great grandsire of Little Peppy. Leo was inbred to Joe Reed P-3. His sire was Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3 and his dam was Little Fanny by Joe Reed P-3. Leo was noted for his prepotency as a sire of good quarter horses.

When we look at Little Peppy we see no linebreeding

It is this lack of inbreeding or linebreeding that Wayne Pooley holds as the key to Little Peppy’s success as a sire. He sees Little Peppy as a complete outcross on the concentrations of bloodlines prevalent in our industry today.

He explains, “I strongly feel that no inbreeding or

linebreeding in Little Peppy is one of his most desir-able characteristics. Because he is a complete outcross on many of our concentrated bloodlines. We have so concentrated on some of the bloodlines, such as Three Bars, that our horses are so saturated with them that we need an outcross horse and Little Peppy is the ideal outcross on all those bloodlines.”

Pooley was quick to clarify that horses like Three

Bars have done a great deal for our breed but that this concentration of bloodlines needs an outcross to keep going. The great show stallion Dual Pep, who has earned in excess of $300,000 shows Little Peppy’s suc-cess as an outcross on an inbred Doc Bar mare. The dam of Dual Pep is Miss Dual Doc by Doc’s Remedy by Doc Bar. The dam of Miss Dual Pep is Miss Brooks Bar

Doc Bar. Thus Dual Pep is the result of outcrossing Little Peppy on an inbred Doc Bar mare.

Sugar Badger proves that good mares don’t have to

have a show record. She will always be remembered as the dam of Peppy San Badger. But as we have seen in this story of Sugar Badger, she was the dam of several good foals. Thus the quarter horse industry will always be grateful to Wayne Pooley for talking Joe Kirk Fulton into keeping this great mare.

The Working Lines

Wimpy P-1 by Larry ThorntonThe modern American Quarter Horse has its roots

in the Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse of Colonial America. Many early Quarter Horse Historians credit Janus as the foundation sire of the Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse. It was through in-breedingtoJanusthatwegetourrstdescriptionofaQuarter Horse.

Helen Michaelis was a famous early historian that did

a lot of research on the Colonial Quarter Horse. She wrote in the “Sons Of Janus” (The Quarter Horse Jour-nal,April1951)thatcolonial breeders bred their mares to race winners and the sires of race winners and *Janus was one of the successful sires of colonial race winners.

Michaelis ex-

plaineditthisway,“After the arrival of Janus, it was within the Janus family that most of the winners were found. Some of the Janus-bred horses had so many crosses to *Janus that modern writ-ers questioned their pedigrees.”

Michaelis told

how *Janus stood at stud 28 years and that the Colonists believed in *Janus blood.ShecreditsthisColonialattitudetothephiloso-phyof,“ifoneJanuscrosswasgood-severalshouldbebetter.”

Kansas Team Wins Ranch Rodeo's World Championship

The World Championship Ranch Rodeo trophy is going home to Kansas, with the team from Scribner Ranch and El Dorado Livestock Inc., both from El Dorado, Kansas. The winning team was comprised of dad John Scribner, brothers David, Doug and Daniel Scribner and family friend Brett Cloud. As they turned in strong performances each of the four nights of the rodeo - with never any major mistakes - "we knew we were probably in the hunt," Daniel said. The Scribner/El Dorado team ended up winning the wild-cow milking event and overall sur-passed the second-place team by a respectable margin of 12.5 points. Upon realizing they won the world championship, "We just shouted and slapped each other on the back. It just felt really good," said John, who's 68. His role at this rodeo was as a substitute, in case someone got hurt. That didn't happen, so he "stayed up in the stands and cheered the boys on." But don't think he wasn't enjoying himself. "When you're my age and the boys ask you to come and play with them, it makes you feel good." For their world championship win, the team won a bronze director's trophy and championship trophy belt buckles from the Working Ranch Cowboys Association, which hosted the championship and sanctions all qualifying rodeos; a 20-foot stock trailer from Gooseneck Trailers; custom saddles sponsored by Texas Vet Lab Inc.; a $350 gift certificate from Oliver Saddle Shop; and a custom-made ranch gate sign from Praisegates/Dennis McBeth. The World Championship Ranch Rodeo was held Nov. 11-14 in Amarillo, Texas, and was WRCA's 15th annual championship. Reserve world champions were also from Kansas: Beachner Bros. Livestock of St. Paul and Broken H Ranch of Bronson. Those team members were Calvin Kendall, Cody Kendall, Cliff Hall, Sage Hall, Bruce Beeman and Orban Stevens. Third place went to last year's champs, Sweetwater Cattle and Tom Drummond Ranch of Foracker and Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Sweetwater has leases in Kansas, though, so there's a Kansas connection. Fourth place continues the theme, with that honor going to Arndt Ranch and Bailey Ranch of Emporia and Tampa, Kan. There's a trend, too, when it comes to top hand and top horse - this event's MVPs. Both are from Sandhill Cattle Co. of Earth, Texas. Top hand of the 2010 WCRR was a repeat from the previous year: Riley Smith of Sandhill Cattle Co., who was truly a top hand - skilled with the reins and a rope - in every event he entered. Reserve top hand was Tell Good of the Triangle Ranch/Black Cattle Co. team of Dimmitt, Texas. The top horse was Sixes Sixgun, an athletic American Quarter Horse sired by Sixes Pick who was ridden by Tripp Townsend of Sandhill Cattle Co. and is owned by Crofoot & Sandhill Ranches GP. But the championship rodeo is about more than just recognizing good ranch horses and letting great cowboys show off their skills. It's also the primary fundraiser for the Working Ranch Cowboys Foundation, which offers scholarships to the family members of working cowboys and crisis assistance when injury or illness take a toll on a ranch family. The ranch rodeo featured a benefit auction - with wonderful donations from teams, vendors and volunteers - as well as fundraisers put on by the popular Pokey the Clown. A trade show, ranch-business expo and cowboy entertainment rounded out the champion-ship experience. Visit www.wrca.org to learn more about WRCA and WRCF or to see photos and full results from the championship rodeo.

THE 15TH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RANCH RODEOWorking Ranch Cowboys Association

The Working Ranch Cowboys Association and Foundation would like to THANK the ranches who drove the miles to compete! Without the support from sponsors, volunteers, and everyone involved the World

Championship Ranch Rodeo would not be possible. See you next year! Our hats off to all the supporters of WRCA & WRCF who bought tickets to watch the best ranches compete. Thanks also goes out to all the venders

in the trade show and ranch expo for bringing your best to Amarillo to showcase.
