Theater of the American South is a celebration of southern culture in Wilson, North Carolina, featuring the best of southern drama, great barbecue, crafts, music, outsider art and much more! A MusicAl Portrait of Patsy Cline is a concert featuring the music of the

late great country music hall of famer as interpreted by north carolina jazz vocalist laura martier. laura and her band, the

tumbling humble Weeds, will sweep you back in time to the heady, often rough and tumble, honky-tonk days of the early 1960s.

Written and originally directed by Ted Swindley and produced with permission of Ted Swindley Productions, Inc. and APC, Inc. the production of “PORTRAIT OF PATSY CLINE”

is produced by Elizabeth R and Company and directed by lebame houston.

Laura Martier developed her craft in Los Angeles, working as a freelance vocalist in recording studios, on various projects, commercials, and film soundtracks for Orion Pictures. Following her move to coastal North Carolina, Martier began exploring the great American song book singing jazz standards and developing her own interpretations. She achieved recognition as a versatile and talented vocalist and recording artist who travels locally, regionally, and internationally performing with some of the finest jazz musicians. Martier has released four well-received recordings, a self-titled debut with guitarist Woody Beckner, “Jazz for Hope,” a live benefit concert for Hope House Foundation, a cameo performance on the Fort Monroe Continental Army Band CD, and “Intersection,” recorded for the VSOJAZ Record label. Growing up in a musical household in rural Wisconsin, Martier draws from a rich tapestry of musical influences. Always seeking to add new experiences and material to her repertoire, she effortlessly blends these influences into every performance.

Martier continues to expand her horizons—from musical ambassador for the state of Wisconsin in the touring company,

“Kids from Wisconsin”; to professor of jazz voice at the College of William and Mary; to leads in regional productions of Oklahoma, The Miracle Worker, Godspell, Oliver, The Music Man and Always…Patsy Cline; to national and international concert performances—DC’s Blues Alley, Norfolk’s Wells Theatre &

Charlie austin, FiDDle, began playing professionally at 18 years of age. Between 1983 and 1987 he played 250 Grand Ole Opry performances including Opry Live, a nationally syndicated TV show and Hee Haw and Nashville Now. He has played and/or toured with nationally known musicians such as Jack Greene, Johnny Russell, Boxcar Willie, Larry Gatlin, Charlie Pride, Ray Stevens, Boots Randolph, Irlene Mandrell, David Allan Coe, Tommy Overstreet, Del Shannon, Bare Naked Ladies and the Saw Doctors, and also toured in Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean. In addition, Charlie spent 4 years performing in Branson, MO. Charlie is currently based in Norfolk, Virginia and can be found performing many styles of music, running his audio studio, and restoring and selling antique and vintage violins.

skip hanCoCk, piano, graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in biology; then went on the road with a show band. He’s been a full-time, professional musician ever since. He has worked in the southeastern area of Virginia for over 25 years and is at home playing everything from classical to jazz to pop. Skip’s many accomplishments include leading the jazz quartets Interlude and Skylark, being musical director and pianist for the Charles Darden Group whose many performances included a Presidential Inaugural Ball, and being both music director and leader for the Tom Netherton Show orchestra. Skip’s talents are not limited to playing the keyboard – he is also an accomplished composer, arranger, and teacher. Currently he teaches piano to USMC and USN students at the Navy School of Music.

BarBara hirD (louise seGer) is a native of Yorkshire, England, where she studied and performed at the prestigious Bradford Playhouse and Film Theatre. Before coming to America she toured the English Regional Theatre circuit in plays ranging from Shakespeare to modern dramas and musicals. In North Carolina she has worked with numerous theatres including the NC Shakespeare Festival, Charlotte Rep and The Lost Colony. Her one-woman show, Elizabeth R—performed in London, Edinburgh, regional England, New York City and in over 30 locations in the mid-Atlantic states—has brought her international acclaim and North Carolina’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine. In her 30-year career, she has portrayed a great variety of leading roles that range from English monarchs in numerous plays, to Miss Daisy in Driving Miss Daisy, to Louise in Always…Patsy Cline, and Madge Kendall in The Elephant Man. Miss Hird occasionally makes a cameo appearance in Portrait of Patsy Cline.

Joe Mapp, Guitar, began his career as house guitarist in R&B clubs in Washington, D.C. when he was too young to enter otherwise. On a mission to develop his knowledge and love of jazz, he migrated north to New York City where he studied with some of the best players in the world including Mike Stern of the Miles Davis Group and Jack Wilkins of Manhattan Transfer. In addition, he rounded out his technical abilities at the renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston. A long-time member of the Outer Banks music scene, Joe is renowned for his expertise and versatility, and is a much sought-after instructor. He is noted for his smooth sound and style created by blending natural talent with consistent practice, and then applying his years of experience and academic studies with the raw expression of emotion.

Dan Martier, DruMs; based on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Dan is a drummer, vocalist and composer, and also the Music Director for Portrait of Patsy Cline. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, he began playing drums at the age of eight. During college at Old Dominion University he received a call to tour with the 60’s group The Spiral Staircase, best known for their 1969 single More Today than Yesterday. In the mid-eighties Dan and his wife Laura settled in St. Petersburg, Florida, where Dan formed his own band, Express, which played over 300 dates per year. Relocating to Los Angeles, Dan was the first-call drummer in several original performing and recording projects. In the early 90s Dan and Laura moved to the east coast where Dan formed the successful group The B-Side featuring dynamic bassist Dexter Whitaker. In 2008 Tim Reynolds began sitting in on Dan’s local projects which included Uber Lounge and Karl Werne And Friends. Soon after Tim’s eclectic trio TR3 was reborn. TR3 is currently touring the US and South America and has released two recordings—Radiance (2009) and Live from SPACE and Beyond (2011).

Bill rea, Bass, has been playing and acting all his life and it shows in his stage presence! He is a highly skilled entertainer who is comfortable playing any number of musical instruments and theatrical roles. Bill cultivated his talent through his college career where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Arts Management with an emphasis in music and theatre at Ferrum College. He can be seen and heard in many Outer Banks television and radio commercials, and is a featured actor in Elizabeth R and Company productions. He is also a founding member of the Outer Banks Opry—a popular folk and bluegrass showcase. Bill can be found these days performing with The Crowd (named by Knot Magazine as the number one wedding band in N.C.), the Other Brothers and Big Blue Truck. Known as the “Cracker Soul Man,” he has the voice and energy that gets

‘em dancin’ every time!

“Muskrat” reaMes, peDal steel, grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he began playing the guitar in the third grade. He formed his own band in the ninth grade, and in the tenth grade he began playing the pedal steel guitar. Muskrat was voted “Best Instrumentalist” by the Virginia Country Music Association in 1992 and again in 1994. Moving to Nashville in 1994 he played with many Grand Ole Opry artists such as: Hank Locklin, Charlie Louvin, Jean Shepard, and Billy Walker. Muskrat was country music star Dierks Bentley’s first steel guitar player. Muskrat moved to the Outer Banks in Kill Devil Hills, NC in 2004 where he began playing for the Outer Banks Music Showcase. Then quickly he began playing with local bands such as Out in the Cold, Ragin’ Cajun’s, Cedar Valley Boys, and Tee Meroney. He can be found these days performing with Outer Banks Jubilee and has since returned to his country and gospel roots, playing dobro in the Drifting Sands Bluegrass Band.

MiCk VauGhn, Bass, spent his youth in Chicago and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He started playing the bass at the age of 12, was a student of Bob Filler for six years where he worked at becoming a stylist playing all types of music, and also played in various ensembles during high school. While living in the Lakeview area of Chicago, Mick started working with Scott Bennett and The Obvivous, recording an album for Giant Records in 1990. During the 1990s Mick performed and recorded with Liz Phair, Dovetail Joint, Matt Walker, Jim Dinou, Peter Noone, Todd Suchermann, Grant Tye and Kathy Richardson. Mick then returned to North Carolina and began working with Dan Martier backing up many wonderful artists including Laura Martier, Joe Mapp, Karl Werne and Eddie Williams.

Peter neoFotis grew up in Lexingon, Virginia and attended college at Columbia University in New York City. He told his first story of Concord, Virginia at Cornelia Street Cafe, in Greenwich Village, NYC, and then developed his show saga at Dixon Place Theater, in downtown NYC. After the compiled scripts of his shows won the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society’s Award for novella, Concord, Virginia was published by St. Martin’s Press and became a finalist for the William Saroyan International Prize for Fiction. Neofotis has since told his stories at numerous theaters, and is honored to be part of the Theater of the American South again this season.

The Dixon Place shows were originally directed by Richard Gottlieb. Christy Park, Leslie Strongwater, Lila Neugebaurer, Fabricio Melano, Patti Neofotis, and Wilson Kidde have also contributed input to subsequent performances.

The late night performance, The Shanghailander, was directed with the help of Betty Lou and Henry Walston, Wilson Kidde, Jerilyn Jerineck, Liz Ligouri, and H.R. Foster.

The unforgettable characters of a small Southern town are brought to life by their creator in a memorable evening of theater. Neofotis will bring two stories of love, war, and remem-brance as he returns to the Theater of the American South, in Wilson, North Carolina. In “The

Strangers,” Neofotis will tell a December romance story between a eccentric Gypsy woman and conservative Jewish man, both of which amazingly survived World War II and find themselves together in the small Southern town of Concord, Virginia. He will also tell “The Flag Bearer,” a

tale concerning overcoming racial prejudices, and a town’s enduring respect for its soldiers.
