PRESIDENT’S REPORT
An annual report is always an opportunity to reflect on the many achievements, successes and challenges
that we have faced throughout the year. These are also detailed elsewhere in this report but it gives me
much pleasure to be able to highlight some of them here.
Once again we can be proud of our many achievements during the year:
Ran hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at four turf venues and two grass
venues, for over 3000 registered players. Fortunately this year the weather was kind to us and
fixtures ran (almost) without a hitch.
A major benefit this year was also having a re-furbished field one back in operation at Downey
Park – teams were able to play on a high quality grass surface and this has fuelled the desire to
bring all Downey Park fields back to this standard.
Sent 20 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, Opens, U18, U15, U13 and
Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park.
Hosted the inaugural Super League and the Women‟s Master‟s Championships at the State
Hockey Centre. These were both major undertakings and many thanks are due in particular to the
BWHA staff for their efforts and also to the many volunteers who assisted.
Continued to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) and Kedron Wavell Services
Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG) which
was established to run the Burringbar Hockey Facility. This year we have upgraded the player
dugouts and technical bench facility, and installed a long-awaited scoreboard. Future planning is
now centred around improving the spectator facilities.
Made a significant change to the format of our free-to-air telecast of hockey, in conjunction with
BHA. This year we employed our own cameraman and producer and utilised Channel 74
(TV4ME) for a weekly half hour hockey show. This show incorporated game highlights (rather
than a full length game) together with coaching tips, training drills, how to‟s and interviews. Its
popularity continues to grow.
Implemented the upgraded Operations Manual (including the Policies and Procedures), for which
substantial work had been done during 2011.
Continued feasibility planning for a turf facility for Downey Park.
Areas for us to continue to focus on in the next year include:
BWHA Strategic Plan – we need to be very clear and committed in our planned activities, to ensure we
use our limited resources (people and their time, operating budget) to maximum advantage.
Continue the planning for a turf surface at Downey Park.
Greater promotion of the benefits of television coverage. We have not exploited the potential
sponsorship capabilities of this medium nor looked at greater use of the telecasts for ongoing coaching
of players, coaches, umpires and commentators.
Volunteer management – the number of people prepared and able to commit to the many volunteer
duties needed to run our organisation seems to dwindle every year. Even when paid positions are
offered it is often still difficult to fill them. And every position that needs to be filled with a paid
employee, because we do not have available volunteers, inevitably leads to an increase in costs to
players.
In spite of the occasional challenges and difficulties we can be very proud of our achievements. In closing I
would particularly like to thank all the members of my management committee for their efforts,
consideration, passion and good humour. To our dedicated volunteers – thank you, because without you
we would not be able to exist. And last but not least my sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA
staff for their ongoing support and hard work.
Dr Karin Walduck
President
VALE - Sue McLean
Sue McLean who was Secretary of BWHA from 1995 to 1998 and a member of Eastern Suburbs Hockey
Club passed away this year after a 4 year battle with Cancer. Sue will be remembered not only as a tireless volunteer in hockey and a passionate Masters player, but also
a person who made many friends with her wonderful sense of humour and outlook on life. She will be
sadly missed.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Whilst planning for two synthetic surfaces at Downey Park has been in the processes for some years now,
this year we actually commenced the application and discussion process with Brisbane City Council and to
date, it is looking positive that this project may get the approval to go beyond concept. Building on a
landfill site in a flood prone area and close to neighbouring homes will provide many challenges but
Council is optimistic that we can overcome these hurdles at this stage. Council is also keen to develop
Downey Park into a facility of international standards with improved facilities for softball, netball and
hockey. We look forward to continuing this work and, if all goes well, having two synthetic surfaces on
Downey Park within five years. This year I was successful in receiving a scholarship from the Australian Sports Commission under the
"Women in Leadership in Sport" program. This enables me to undertake a Graduate Diploma of Business
(Sport Management) where I will learn skills valuable to administration of sport. One of the first
requirements of the course was to undertake a survey to identify marketing opportunities for our
Association. I surveyed BWHA players aged 13-17 years and received many positive comments on what
players thought of the sport, how they felt it could be improved and what they planned for their hockey
future. We look forward next year to implementing some of these opportunities. I will also be developing
a Business Plan for BWHA, a tool which will be valuable when seeking funding to develop the synthetic
surfaces at Downey Park.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
As the 2012 season comes to an end, it is a good time to reflect on our achievements and trials, so we can
plan effectively for the future. Thankfully the weather gods were kinder to us this year than in the past three
and meant we had better field conditions at Downey and Rasey Park.
The new look field 1, was fantastic thanks to the dedication of Meg Brodie‟s team of workers, especially
Noala Gordon and John Robinson and the assistance of Kylie Dyer from the BCC. Having this field back
on deck had a great affect in so many areas: the general feeling at Downey Park, the level of skills able to
be displayed on this field; increased canteen, bar and hockey shop revenue, increased club fundraising
through club raffle day & cake stalls. A full report on our property and facilities can be found later in this
annual report.
BWHA planning took place in October to December of 2011, providing calendars, budgets and directions
for 2012. We again asked for clubs input via a questionnaire. We appreciate the clubs taking the time to
complete this, so we can make decisions that best suit the majority of our members. Our AGM in
November also saw us introduce our new Operations Manual a document to replace our by-laws, local
rules, policies and procedures. This was a mammoth undertaking 3 years in the making. Special thanks to
Ronda Nix and Meg Brodie who got the ball rolling and Chris Blanchard for following it through to the
end. As with any document teething problems have been found and corrected, we will have further
corrections or updates at the 2012 AGM.
In 2012 we also further strengthened the working relationship with BHA on areas of common involvement:
joint finals, competitions and use of venues, player and coach development and Burringbar Park to name a
few.
BWHA continued in October to December in 2011 to run Summer Hockey at the SHC and at BP, Jenny
Heron and Kathryn Austen ensured draws, workers and umpires were organised to allow people to enjoy
hockey in a social and fun environment.
The start of 2012 looked bright, no major rain or floods, instead our server decided it would stop working
and a new one was quickly organised to avoid hampering the start of the season. Then Kathryn Austen who
had been with BWHA for 3 years decided to leave to pursue other career opportunities. We knew Kathryn
would be greatly missed with her wealth of hockey knowledge however she has remained involved as a
volunteer, which has been great for our association. Thank you Kathryn for all your hard work for BWHA.
This change in staffing meant we could re-look at our organisation and following interviews it was decided
to employ Leah Wenzel in a shared role with Regie Fisher. Regie has been our part-time RDO and was
looking for full time employment. The restructuring allowed us to cross train Leah and Regie in both
Administration and Development. They now can cover each other‟s positions which is important in an
organisation of limited resources. It also gives both ladies an opportunity to develop their skills in a variety
7 2012 BWHA Annual Report
of areas. Leah comes from a hockey background in Gympie and is developing into a vital member of our
team.
It has been heartening to know that HQ has been using Sporting Pulse this year and with that have
identified first hand some of the limitations of the system we have worked with for the past 5 years. Sue
Barsby has worked tirelessly to get the fixtures into the system and has assisted club database volunteers as
well as HQ staff and associations around Queensland. Leah Wenzel and Regie Fisher have been
responsible primarily for the data input for which I thank them.
BHMG who BWHA is a part of, gained permission from the Department of Communities (Sport and
Recreation) to include in the Turf upgrade the new Technical and Players Benches, this has made an
amazing difference to the facility at Burringbar Park. During this time a scoreboard was also installed from
funds from sponsors and new goal nets purchased funded through a grant. Players are now happy to have
these great facilities to play at. Of course with every plus, there can be a minus. We are currently looking at
a way to improve spectator facilities especially viewing of the games. It is quite amazing to see what has
been achieved at this venue in a few short years, we thank all clubs for their support of this facility.
Sonya Fisher has been working very hard in gaining grants for our association. She is constantly on the
look out for opportunities from the BCC, State Government and the Gambling Funds. We received funding
for Officials Development and Accreditation in 2012 and will be submitting a number of other applications
in the near future.
Jenny Heron continued in her area of Fixtures and Grading, working with multiple committees and people
within BWHA and BHA to co-ordinate fixtures, venues and finals. This is a huge area of our sport. The
problems with the database fixture templates; the numerous requests for upgrading; changes to fixtures; as
well as liaising with BHA means this is a very large job. Jenny continues to handle this area with
professionalism and impartiality, thank you Jenny for all your hard work.
Coupled with this was Desley Mackay who took on the role of Match Secretary checking clubs stayed
within the rules of our fixtures. This role was split into three sections in seniors in 2012 (Turf, Grass &
Masters) to reduce the workload to a manageable size. Thank you to Christine Blanchard and Margie
Brown for taking on the Grass and Masters sections. Desley is standing down this year after many years on
Management, we thank Desley for all her time and effort over the years and we feel sure she will continue
to volunteer in some capacity in the future.
Brisbane Hockey (BWHA & BHA) worked with Paul Mills to establish “HockeyZone”, a free to air 30
minute hockey show, shown each week during the season on Thursday nights on channel 74. This was an
information packed program on skills, history, drills, fixtures and events. Coupled with the TV show was
longer segments shown on You-Tube. This is a great advancement in our sport and we would like to
encourage all our members to support this product in the future either by watching the TV program or
logging onto the You-Tube site. We are the only ones that can promote hockey to the general population
and we need your help to do it. All this could not have happened without the hard work of Paul Mills and
his band of helpers and family: Col Morley, Tom Whetton; Sonya Fisher, Bernie Pangrazio, Annette
Stouter, Rachelle Whetton, Kathryn Austen, Leanne Howard, Regie Fisher, Sharyn Simpson just to name a
few – to anyone else who helped with commentary, club histories, stories or simply supplying information
when asked, thank you.
Our representative teams again were very successful at all levels. We are lucky to have such a great
Development Team of Sharyn, Sue & Regie creating opportunities for our players and coach development.
It takes much organisation and planning to allow so many people to be involved at representative levels, so
congratulations to our Development Team for a job well done. Thank you to all selectors, who give up
many hours watching fixtures and trials to select the best teams possible, and to our volunteer coaches,
managers and umpires who travel with the teams. Full details of the results follow in this report.
In 2012 we hosted the inaugural Super League at the SHC. This was a new concept to have zone teams
from across Queensland compete in a tournament that was billed as the best 100 players in our state. The
competition was fierce and resulted in a great tournament. But it is hard work running a tournament at the
SHC. BWHA was responsible for all costs – sports trainers, hospitality etc. Our only source of income was
a BBQ which required volunteers to man it. In the end we ran at a small loss, despite the outstanding efforts
of our BWHA staff Sue, Leah & Regie and the volunteers from Management and clubs who supported us,
thank you.
We also hosted the largest tournament in Queensland the State Women‟s Masters, thankfully Bronwyn
Morris took on the role of Championship Convenor. Can I just say without her the tournament may not
have run to completion, the rain fell the week before the tournament and turned the grass fields into a
quagmire, Bronwyn and Greg Gunner from the SHC worked tirelessly to keep the fields playable. Thank
you does not seem enough to show our appreciation. The clubs for this event were rostered on to assist with
8 2012 BWHA Annual Report
a BBQ, set-up or pull-down each day on the grass fields and all clubs were outstanding in their
contribution, thank you and well done. Again, this cost us a lot of money & volunteer hours to run. A full
report on this tournament can be found later in this annual report.
Thank you to Lesley Bennett and Sonya Fisher for their never-ending efforts in the Umpires and Technical
area and to the Committee who constantly strive for improvement across this area of our sport. Thank you
to our mentors in particular Jan Hadfield whose assistance and guidance is always appreciated. In 2012 we
reimbursed all technical officials on senior turf fixtures, thank you to Lesley for doing the allocations and
to Leah and Regie for organising the recording and payments. A special thank you to our members who
continue to work in this capacity at no cost, this allows the money to be spent in other areas of our sport.
Thank you also to Lesley Bennett for all her work in the Masters Gradings and Fixtures and to Ros Julien
and her committee for working on developing the Masters area of our association. This is an area of our
sport which is growing steadily and has a wealth of knowledge, experience and talent that we need to tap
into. Hopefully this committee will be able to fully utilise this great resource we have in our sport.
Our Junior Committee continue to do a great job, organising and providing quality hockey for children
aged 4+ to 17. Debbie Wark and her committee should be proud of all they achieve each year. The boys
again played their U11 Coulter Shield with the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park. This was a great day
and ran very smoothly through the efforts of the Junior and Development Committees. The Junior Section
of this report highlights the many achievements of our Junior Committee. Debbie is looking to move from
the junior section of our association after 4 years, we would like to thank Debbie for her enormous
contribution in this area.
Chris Blanchard after completing the Operations Manual in 2011, then ensured our Risk Management Plan
was updated in February 2012 and then embarked on arguably the most important project BWHA has
undertaken since the building of the clubhouse. We hope to finally build a turf or two at Downey Park or
have a final decision that it cannot happen. Christine has been liaising with the BCC to do all the
preliminary work on this. The urgent need for turf surfaces at Downey Park is now so overdue it is having a
significant impact on our ability to provide quality hockey for our members. We wish Chris good luck with
this endeavour, if you have any skills that you could bring to this, Chris would love to hear from you.
Melda Dunning worked with BHA and our Sports Trainers to provide the best service possible for fixtures.
Thank you Melda for looking after this important area of our sport.
Joyce Proctor, Elma Brennand and Shirley Otto continued to spend countless hours working through our
archives. They are always looking for more information. Karin, Jenny T, Joyce, Caroline, Bud, Mary, Ian,
Nipper, Robbie and Rhonda all assisted at Downey Park, either in the Canteen, Bar, Uniforms or Control
Room, we have truly great volunteers. Rae (Canteen) and Denise (Bar) provided quality service and goods
to our members each Saturday, thank you for all your hard work. To our many casual workers on Saturday,
thank you. A special thanks to Charli in the Saturday Office and Sharon her mum who filled in when Charli
was not available. Thank you to Mary & Bev who continue to assist out of hours opening and closing the
clubhouse for outside bookings.
I would like to thank the many volunteers at club and association level. Our association cannot survive
without you, from the smallest task to the large roles all are important. While recognition of some
volunteers does happen, for most it is a labour of love and commitment. It is difficult to single out
individuals who work hard for hockey as we have so many great volunteers.
To our President Dr Karin Walduck my heartfelt thanks, she has again lead by example. Her ability to think
logically and strategically makes her a wonderful asset to the association. How she fits it all into her
schedule I don‟t know, but she continues to provide advanced leadership and enthusiasm to our Board of
Management and Association.
Many of our members feel the joy of childbirth, engagements and marriages during the year and we
congratulate you on these. On the other hand we also lose many loved ones or experience great loss for
many reasons our condolences and thoughts go to all members who have suffered in this way. BWHA
continues to grow and time becomes more precious. I cannot thank enough the people who continue to give
so much time to our Association on a volunteer basis. Thank you to all our Management, Committees and
Officials this year your support has been appreciated you can be justly proud of your achievements.
A special thank you also to our staff who work above and beyond the call of duty. They are all passionate
hockey people and it is this passion that ensures that their role at BWHA is not just a job but a commitment
to the sport we all love.

TREASURER’S REPORT
I would like to acknowledge the work done by the BWHA office and in particular, Kath Proctor, that has
allowed the continued smooth operation of the Association. The Association is very professionally
managed and it is a credit to our hard working staff. This is highlighted by both the completion of the
Financial Statements in a timely and satisfactory manner and the continued strong financial position of the
Association. Well done ladies!
A summary of the 2012 Financial Performance of the Association follows:
Net Assets increased to $716k
Income fell slightly to $1.244m
Expenses also fell slightly - down to $1.192m
Profit was also slightly lower at $22k (this was after $30k was put into a reserve in respect to a
proposed feasibility study for capital works that BWHA is considering undertaking)
o Canteen sales increased
o Electricity costs remained fairly stable after a large increase in 2011
o Repairs and maintenance costs slightly increased with an expanded program
QCTV arrangements were transitioned to TV4ME with the establishment of Hockey Zone - a joint
initiative with Brisbane Hockey Association (Men‟s). This expanded the reach of our Hockey Zone
program to all mainland states (excluding Northern Territory), saw the commencement of live
streaming of some fixtures and the Division 1 Grand Finals and saw the Hockey Zone team (Paul
Mills, Col Morley and Tom Whetton) involved in the filming of HA matches in Cairns. We also were
able to film games at some HA and HQ championships that were held in Brisbane (Paul is still in awe
of the State Women‟s Masters Championship). BWHA and BHA took the decision to continue with
Hockey Zone in 2013 and to try to build the program / format into something that can be sustained and
expanded for the benefit of both Brisbane Hockey and the wider hockey community. Our view is that
as the largest hockey community in Queensland, we need to be involved in both the present and the
future of our sport.
Grants - we will continue to submit grant applications wherever possible, to assist replace assets,
upgrade facilities, improve operations and deliver sustainable solutions for the Association.

31, and increase coverage. The early goals for the show were;
Club Histories
Coaching tips
Film and make highlights from 4 games per week
Player interviews
Interstate and provincial competition exposure
Equipment advise
Website
Youtube channel
Income
Additional items that have been achieved this season;
International coverage (Aus v NZ)
Relationship with Hockey Australia
Comprehensive coverage and promotion of state and local competitions
Live streaming
10 2012 BWHA Annual Report
Twitter account
DVD creation
Sending out Youtube links each week to a data base of almost 100 emails
Training staff and volunteers
The show has increased game coverage from 10% of joint division 1 games on Briz 31 to 40% with the
added coverage of other competitions such as Super League to the U11 Southern Cross Tournament. A
total of 115 games were covered in 2012. 10 club histories have been produced, over 100 interviews
filmed, 12 coaching segments and 12 segments on equipment. Live Streaming is without doubt the
opportunity for the future, this year 23 games were streamed at no cost to Hockey Brisbane.
The show and equipment purchased has generated a total of $7,500 which has been generated in the first 8
months. The segments on Youtube have received 100,000 hits from over 85 different countries.
A presentation was made to all State Hockey Associations in September seeking their involvement in the
2013 series, to date none have shown interest. A separate approach has since been made to the associations
of Queensland Hockey informing them that for less than $3000 Hockey Zone will visit their region and
include them in the show. This is an ideal opportunity for host associations of state wide competitions such
as the u18‟s to gain coverage of the competition without Hockey Brisbane having to cover the costs.
Future
In 2013 Hockey Zone will increase its focus on the development of income and younger players.
With the advantage of a season under our belt and the time to approach sponsors before the end of the year
it is hoped that we may find local business‟s to pick up naming rights to a number of items in the program.
We are also looking for business‟s where hockey players work who would be interested in a “Business
Profile” within the show. As already mentioned we are seeking other regions to share some of the costs
when it is time for state wide competitions or items of interest in their areas.
Production has commenced for the 2013 series with a number of school visits and numerous junior
coaching segments being filmed. In 2013 we plan to feature a JT1 game in the show each week, which will
be played as a curtain raiser for one Div 1 game which will now be played and filmed on Friday nights. It is
hoped that the Friday night games will draw a crowd and may also be live streamed, a huge step for
Hockey Brisbane to lead the way in regular live coverage broadcasting to the world. The 2013 television
season is proposed to commence on February 7th
featuring the usual items and coverage of the indoor finals
until the Div 1 competition get underway.
Summary
It has been privilege to have worked with many of the staff and volunteers from BWHA in 2012 while
producing what is without question the best hockey program on television. I have met some interesting
characters, heard some great stories and made some new friends, but what I have discovered is a sport
where the passion of the people is rivalled by no other. Although there has been a cost involved, compared
to the industry norm for television production we have what can only be described as raging success,
having conquered the world for a song. What we have created is not being paralleled anywhere in the
world, and recent coverage of the AHL (or lack thereof) has highlighted the quality of what we are
producing here in Brisbane. Many may try to imitate what we are doing and fail but we must keep
improving and developing for the benefit of the game and the product. Eventually others will come on
board as they realise that working with us is the best for the future. Already we are beginning to see
relationships build simply because of the television program and this only strengthens the product of
Hockey Brisbane and BWHA. Players and parents are telling me how they “watch the show religiously” all
over the country; this is leading to more players seeing Brisbane as the destination for their hockey future.
It has taken much hard work and commitment from all involved with Hockey Zone to bring it so far in such
a short period of time and I hope that it has been enjoyed by all and will continue to bring pleasure and
respect to the hockey community for many years to come.

COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING
TURF
For the first time since turf fixtures began, Divisions 1, 2 and 3 were played on a Saturday and Divisions 4
& 5 on a Sunday again in 2012. Fifty-three teams affiliated for the BWHA Turf Competitions, grading
games were held over two weekends and 3 teams missed out playing on the turf.
This year BWHA continued with all turf divisions fielding 10 teams. The turf season commenced in early
March, fifteen timeslots were required for the Saturday competition and ten on Sundays to cater for all
games.
The mix of the State Hockey Centre, Redcliffe, Burringbar Park and Tiger Turf - Eastern Suburbs Hockey
fields at Carina has resulted in another busy year for clubs playing at multiple venues each weekend. This
year BWHA worked with BHA to coordinate club days at several venues throughout the season and I
believe the clubs enjoyed the camaraderie of these days.
Together with BHA we had TV games at the State Hockey Centre on field 1 each week. This caused a few
problems as we had to play 4 Division 1 games one after the other up to and including the finals but on the
whole I think everyone has enjoyed watching the TV4ME or the U-tube program and it will continue in
2013.

MONDAY MASTERS
This year, with the State Championships in Brisbane, we saw a large number of nominations -between 132
and 140. Six Brisbane masters teams were chosen and to give extra players a chance for a position, 14
players were put in Brisbane 1 and 2 but 15 players for Brisbane 3 to 6.
All up 88 players were named and 10 shadows.
This year there were 4 selectors Robyn Anderson, Noreen Walton, Di Young and Janene McCall with Gaye
Henderson as proxy. When Gaye withdrew, Jenny Heron came onto the panel in her place.
Selections comprised of club games, three trials, plus Southern Cross. Players were invited to at least 1 trial
and if unable to attend were given a chance to come to another.
The problems that we encountered were as follows:
Some players found their nominations had not uploaded in the computer system. These were mostly
verified by email.
The longer time phase nominations were open was not useful for selection as players still left it closer
to the closing date to nominate and therefore we could not start selecting until near the closing date.
Also there was a general opinion amongst players that large numbers would nominate so why should I
bother?
Southern Cross was not a useful selection tool this year. Last year it was used as grass trials but in
2012, it was only a turf competition. We always keep Brisbane 1 and 2 at home for training and send
the players we need to see more of to Southern Cross but many players from the Div 4 and 5
competition are needed for their clubs and often it is up to the players vying for Brisbane 5 and 6 to
play Div 1 and 2 at Southern Cross. We asked for two teams in Div 2 but as that could not be done we
only sent one team. These girls played well and were a great group who know they may miss out on a
position for Brisbane but accepted the challenge. Therefore it may be better to keep our teams at home
instead of going to Southern Cross and have our own trials.
Lack of coach nominations for the Masters teams was a worry but not a big problem for selectors.
Results at State Championship:
Brisbane 1 - 4th
in Div 1
Brisbane 2 - 3rd
in Div 1
Brisbane 3 -Winners of Div 3
Brisbane 4 - 3rd
in Div 3
Brisbane 5 -Winners of Div 5
Brisbane 6 -Winners of Div 6

Finally, as a team we would like to thank Brisbane management for their help in this large process and
especially their willingness to make sure as many players as possible who missed out for Brisbane were
taken up by other centres. As convenor I would like to thank my fellow selectors for their time and effort in
this long but rewarding process and yes for making it enjoyable.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS
This year a decision was made to continue with 10 teams in each division where possible, with only 49
teams affiliating. Grading games were not held as the team positions were worked out on the points table
from the 2011 season. Downey Park 2 had nine teams when the draw was commenced but Commercial
had new players and requested affiliating another team which was graded into Downey Park 2 enabling all
divisions to have 10 teams. All teams scored points during the season.
Presidents Cup was not held again his year due to the large number of Inter-City, National and International
games held during the season. The teams leading at the end of Round 1 were named the President‟s Cup
winners. Due to all the constraints re time, venues and player availability BWHA is looking at not
awarding President‟s cup trophies in the future.
121 teams made up our competition this year, 50 Senior Turf, 50 Senior Grass and 21 Monday Masters
teams - 10 teams were Minor Premiers and Premiers in their division. All divisions were hotly contested
with no team recording zero points.
Thank you to all the ladies who were on the BWHA Fixture & Grading Committees for a job well done.
Hope to see you back next year.

COMPETITION: OPERATIONS
UMPIRES
It was another big year for BWHA umpires. Thank you to our Turf and Grass umpire stewards Sonya
Fisher and newcomer Judy Hartnett who did a tremendous job with the umpire allocations. With 50 games
each fixture weekend, (25 Turf and 25 Grass) it was a huge task to find umpires for the 18 weeks of
fixtures, plus finals. Without umpires there wouldn‟t be any games. Thank you to all umpires, who give up
their time, to ensure that fixtures go ahead. Every player sat a rules paper again this year, the aim of which
was to educate players and hopefully make the umpire‟s job easier. This is an open book test so players
should take the opportunity to sit in groups to discuss and complete the paper.
This year Jan Hadfield conducted 2 rules talks for turf umpires and Rachel Ardern delivered a rules talk for
grass umpires. These sessions are always entertaining and informative. Although no new rules were
introduced this year, there were changes in the interpretation of some rules particularly those relating to
Penalty corners.
BWHA continued with automatic 2 min green and 5 min yellow card suspensions throughout all senior
games including those at Downey Park.
Every year BWHA sends umpires to State Championships and the number of umpires volunteering to give
up their time for the Opens, Vets and U18 weekends, and the longer U15 and U13 tournaments was lower
this year. It was a real struggle to find umpires who would not only travel to the State Championships but
also attend the relevant Southern Cross competitions. This year Southern Cross was conducted over two
Sundays for each age group and as usual our umpires were overworked to cover gaps left when other
Associations forgot to send umpires. Congratulations to all umpires who were successful in attaining a
HockeyEd practical assessment or an upgrade of an existing qualification.
13 2012 BWHA Annual Report
TECHNICAL
BWHA again this year had paid qualified technical staff on Turf games instead of rostering clubs each
week. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful job of keeping the games running efficiently and on time.
The U&TC, which consisted of Ronda Nix, Lesley Bennett, Cheryl Kann, Lyn Thomas, Christina
Nipperess-Sims and Caroline Schomberg, met regularly throughout the season. Thank you for volunteering
your time.
MASTERS
As all games need to be concluded by 10pm on Monday nights, the teams again had to cope with a shorter
interval at half time. The time between games was extended from 3 minutes to 5 mins which enabled
umpires and technical volunteers to complete the formalities of the game and still be ready to take the field
for the next game. The teams are to be congratulated for adapting to the change of times.
The competition each year continues to improve, with MM Div 1 of a very high standard. While Divisions
2 and 3 had 8 teams in each, there were only 5 teams in Division 1, which made the draw difficult as the
fixture committee of Robyn Andersen, Lesley Bennett, Petra Faas O‟Meara and Kayleen Smith tried to
arrange teams from the same club playing at the same venue, which was hard when there are 3 divisions
and 4 venues in use each week.
The Masters Organising Committee chaired by Ros Julien held regular meetings throughout the year. With
Ros moving to New South Wales she will no longer be able to continue with her role as Chairman of the
Masters Organising Committee. Thank you for your wonderful work and commitment to Masters Hockey
in Brisbane.

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)
This was the first year that the match secretary role was split into the three competitions (grass, turf and
masters). As I have a particular passion for grass hockey, I assumed the role of grass match secretary and
have spent the year working with clubs to remind them of the rules in the Operations Manual and
encouraging player registration in compliance with those rules. I must say clubs were mostly aware of the
rules and how to apply them and we had little need to enforce penalties. Thanks to team managers and club
officials for your support in ensuring player registrations were appropriate throughout the season. The
grass competition ran well this year and we look forward to developing this competition further in coming
years.

COMPETITIONS: SPORTS TRAINERS
Once again I would like to thank the dedicated sports trainers who attended our games this year. Sports
trainers have an important role in helping our players prepare for games and they assist with the safety
elements of sports injuries.
We supplied sports trainers to a majority of games throughout the season, occasionally there are difficulties
such as no qualified personnel or trainers being available to attend their roster through personal
emergencies. When this occurs games are to proceed using a common sense approach by players, umpires
and technical officials and if required an ambulance should be called.
I was away for a number of months however I‟d like to thank the BWHA office staff and committee
members for their assistance and guidance whilst I was around and even more so for when I was away
overseas.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT
REGIONAL COACHING DIRECTOR (RCD)
Once again 2012 promised to be another busy year with the player and coach development calendar full of
opportunities and new initiatives to complement our already successful programs. Some of these were as
follows:
U13 Development program – aimed at 1st time players for turf
Inaugural Super League competition and BWHA taking the title.
4 x U15 teams competing in the State Championships
South East Queensland Goalkeepers clinic
HockeyZone program – skills and drills segments.
The Southern Cross committee made some changes to the Southern Cross competition format this year.
With the U13, U15 and U18 competitions being held over 2 weekends. The Southern Cross league format
also changed with introduction of some experimental rules. It continued from last year as a round robin
competition, no finals and played over two weekends. Both Brisbane teams the Swift and Scorpions
acquitted themselves well with the Brisbane Scorpions winning the competition and Swifts placed 4th
. The
Southern Cross competitions fulfil very important roles for the development, preparation and selection of
our representative players. Being held over the two weekends added an extra burden on our already
stretched personnel. Whilst the rationale for the change was solid I am pleased that we will be reverting
back to one weekend for each age group in 2013.
Our representative teams achieved amazing results congratulations and thank-you to our support personnel,
Coaches, Managers and Selectors for all their hard work, expertise and time they dedicate each year. Our
U13 teams were forced to endure some extraordinary wet weather in Bundaberg and we were very proud of
our teams‟ tolerance, behaviour and performances at this time. A comprehensive summary of each of our
teams placing can be found in our records section of the report however would like to highlight the
following team‟s performances:
Super League Champions
Open State Team Champions
U18 Brisbane 1 Division 1 Champions
U13 Brisbane 1 Division 1 Champions
U13 Brisbane 3 Division 2 Champions
U11 Brisbane 1 Division 1 Champions
Devo‟s 1 Indoor Hockey Team Division 1 Premiers.
Congratulations to all those players who gained recognition by being selected in Australian and Queensland
Teams and Squads during the year. It was particularly pleasing to see BWHA player Madonna Blyth
captain the Hockeyroos at the London Olympics and joining her for the first time was another BWHA
player Jodie Schulz. Audrey Smith, Jasmine Larosa, Murphy Allendorf, Georgia Hillas, Maddie Smith and
Sally O‟Toole also gained selection in National Junior and Senior squads. The names of these players will
appear in records section of the report. The chart below represents the number of talented identified
BWHA players selected for Queensland.
U13 U15 U18 U21 Open
2012 8 4 10 10 12
The following development opportunities occurred in 2012:
BWHA provided specialist sessions for our talent identified U13, U15, U18 and U21 players
assisting them with their preparation for respective National Championships and Camps.
BWHA players provided important match practice against our U13, U15, U16, & U18 Queensland
and Secondary Schoolgirls Teams.
Our Selection trials and development program were conducted in March/April and July. The
numbers involved outlined in table below. Our programs always attract good numbers and we
were able to provide most nominated players the opportunity to represent Brisbane or another
centre at the respective championships.
15 2012 BWHA Annual Report
BWHA invited guest speakers Brian Fitzpatrick to address our representative parents at our
Annual meeting.
SEQ Goalkeeping Clinic held in Ipswich. Involved 6 BWHA Goalkeepers.
U13 & U15 Skill Development Clinic held over 4 Saturday mornings in October – November
involved 32 players and 5 coaches.
2 x Level One coaching Clinics planned and 1 conducted with Brisbane Hockey Association.
Hockey Queensland Coaching Conference held in Cairns in conjunction with Kookaburra test
match vs. New Zealand as preparation for London.
BWHA Division 1 and Division 2 team in Brisbane Indoor Hockey Competition.
Assistance and content provided to Skills and Drills segments for Hockeyzone program on
TV4ME.
1 x abbreviated Level One hockey course to secondary physical education teachers and trainees.
The above programs are well supported by the many participation and recruitment programs conducted by
Regina Fisher Development Officer and newly appointed Leah Wenzel e.g. Active after School Programs,
HookN2Hockey, Hockey in the Park, and many school development programs. Regie is also responsible
for our successful Rookey U7/U9 competition, U7 & U9 skills day and U11 development and selection
programs. The Active after School programs continue to grow and be popular with schools and students. A
snapshot view this year is as follows:
28 Schools, 196 sessions, 1,000 students and 6-8 coaches employed.
Summary
I would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts over the past 4 years of Debbie Wark as Junior Chairperson.
A personal thanks to Debbie, whose words of wisdom, tireless efforts, vision and support have been of
great value to the development of our players. Debbie has a wealth of knowledge and experience to give
and we are glad that she will continue and add input to BWHA in another capacity.
Thank-you to all members of Management for their continued support and hard work in 2012.
Congratulations and thank-you to President Karin Walduck for her guidance and governance during the
year.
My last thanks go to work mates Kathy Proctor, Kathryn Duggan, Sue Barsby, Regie Fisher and Leah
Wenzel for their tireless efforts and continued professionalism. Our shared passion for the game remains
our driving force and always strive to incorporate this for all our programs.
Wishing everyone good health and happiness for the holiday and off season.

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)
This year has been a very exciting year for me in the role of Regional Development Officer at BWHA and
the expansion into the shared Administrative Assistant role, once again the season provided exciting
challenges and wonderful new experiences. I met some amazing young athletes who were new to our
development or representative programs and am confident to boast that Brisbane has many young talented
players in the junior age divisions.
A highlight for me was the U13 Development & Representative Programs this season, The program
commenced early in March with an eager group of players and coaches, a lot of these players were new to
turf coming from the U11 Division and enjoyed an introduction to turf. This lead into the U13 Selection
trials, Brisbane selected 3 teams to attend Southern Cross over 2 weekends and finalised teams to attend the
State Championships at Bundaberg at the end of June. I would like to congratulate all of the players, their
families and our Coaches for their commitment to the length of the program this year. Brisbane was
extremely successful in Bundaberg at the State Championships. We had a very wet week with the draw

continually being adjusted accordingly. I was ecstatic to be appointed as the coach of the Brisbane U13/1
team and was once again extremely proud of my team winning the U13 State Championships. It was
without a doubt a major highlight of my year and I would like to thank BWHA for giving me this coaching
opportunity.
The U11 Southern Cross was a perfect winter‟s day at Downey Park, the teams looked amazing from the
balcony during their games and the official March Past ceremony. Once again the day was shared with the
U11 Coulter Shield at Downey Park, so the regional Associations were able to cheer their teams and
Downey Park was alive with U11 action. The Hockeyzone camera crew were out and about filming games
and highlights of the tournament featured on a Hockeyzone episode that went to air nationally and is
available for viewing on youtube. This was very exciting for all involved. I am pleased to say that our
Brisbane U11/1 team won Division 1. Brisbane fielded 4 teams and all players & officials had a great
hockey experience. I would like to thank the Junior Committee, Sue Barsby (Development Admin
Assistant) and Sharyn Simpson (BWHA Coaching Director) for all their hard work that went into hosting
the tournament and fielding 4 teams to participate. The U11 Development program ran smoothly this
season and we had good participant numbers and positive feedback that the kids enjoyed the program.
A huge thank you must go out to the QLD representative players who support our programs, and give back
to our junior players, whether it be coaching or signing autographs and encouraging our players to keep
their dreams alive. We truly appreciate your dedication to our sport and our juniors. A huge congratulations
to all the U7 & U9 Rookey teams who helped celebrate the Olympic year with a Skills day in May and an
end of season carnival on August 18. It was a very exciting season at Rasey Park with plenty of action each
week. Thanks also to Bunnings Stafford for the sponsorship of our new BBQ at Rasey Park.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, and hope to see you all next year for
another very exciting season.

TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT
Tours – a great year with Southern Cross & State Championships wins. We took out the following
Championships: the U13Div 1, U13Div 2, U18 Div 1, Opens, Super League and Masters Div 3, Div 5 &
Div 6. Our U11 Southern Cross Brisbane 1 team won Div 1 as well. Congratulations to all Coaches,
Managers & Players.
Thank you to all Selectors who volunteered this year – it is a very time consuming job and often thankless
but results in all players having equal opportunity to be seen. All Brisbane teams represented us well to the
best of their abilities and this experience will only assist them in the future. Thank you to all Coaches,
Managers and Umpires for your time you put into each team and in achieving the best possible results.
Congratulations to all players who made Qld teams, who made Shadows and who were TI‟d.
Next year‟s State Championships are in:
U13 - Mackay (4 teams)
U15 - Ipswich (4 teams)
U18 - Cairns (3 teams)
Masters - Toowoomba (6 teams)
Super League & Opens - Brisbane (3 teams)
Apparel sales were great this year due to the introduction of new apparel styles. Unfortunately I had to
order large amounts of most items so have a fair amount of stock still on hand. However this will be sold
next year and only small apparel orders will be required early at the start of 2013.
Uniform & Equipment - We ordered a new playing strip (shirt & skirt) for our Super League team which
turned out very striking and well worth the purchase for our elite players. We will continue to replace old,
stretched skirts and missing tops (that mysteriously disappear from time to time!) Our Masters players
purchased their own skirt this year which worked out better and will save quantity hassles in the future.
Thank you to Jenny Tidey, Rhonda Bentley & Maria Mijts and all the team managers who assisted with the
uniform allocations and “safe” return this year. Also, I know Rhonda missed the enjoyment of some of her
Saturday mornings at Rasey Park but with her making a speedy recovery we will see her back next year.

UMPIRES PORTFOLIO REPORT
TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT
In 2012, over 237 umpires were used across the five turf divisions.
I would again like to thank the umpires who did more than their “fair share” during the season or said “yes”
when I rang and asked for assistance in covering an allocation – either due to injury or an inability or
unwillingness to front up.
These people, who really contributed to the success of the 2012 season, are a special bunch and add a lot of
experience to the competition. They are generally also interested in umpiring and are working on
developing their skills – both key qualities that we want to encourage!! I won‟t dwell on the reasons why
people are unable to do their allocations, but generally I believe that in the same circumstances, they would
have found a way to play – but they obviously don‟t feel the same way about an umpiring allocation (which
is very disappointing).
This year was as difficult as most recent years as the trend continued for players to either be unwilling to
umpire or to put such tight conditions around their availability that it is almost impossible to allocate them.
I also heard from a number of sources that there is a general belief that it was “BWHAs‟ fault that umpiring
standards on lower turf divisions were worsening”. Let me lay down some facts:
BWHA is an Association made up of its members – so if “BWHA” is at fault then it is its members
who are actually at fault;
Clubs (in general) do little to encourage players to umpire or to develop the umpires that they have;
I only allocate off the turf umpire registers that Clubs put forward; and
Club officials (coaches, managers, teams and / or club captains) don‟t enforce appropriate standards of
behavior – which can result in abuse of umpires or dissent. This doesn‟t encourage players who
witness this behavior to want to put themselves in a position where it could be directed at them.
Just like players, umpires aren‟t perfect – so if it is inappropriate to criticize or yell at someone in your
team for missing a tackle or trap, then it is also inappropriate to do the same to an umpire who has missed
something that you think should have been blown! To help enforce this, we are looking at a new system of
mentoring for Sunday turf divisions so that we can cover more games. Hopefully this will:
increase the willingness of players to umpire;
improve the behavior of all participants – players, officials and spectators; and
provide further development of a very important resource – people willing to “have a go”.
Thanks

GRASS UMPIRES STEWARD’S REPORT
Observations/Processes:
Once a system was worked out the allocation of umpires was quite easy. There were a few unfortunate
errors made in the early part of the season partly due to my inexperience with the role which was perhaps
made more complex by the appointment of a new admin assistant at BWHA at about the same time. One
problem we identified was the keeping of a master copy of updated allocations for each week needed to be
managed to ensure the most up to date version of the umpire allocations was sent to clubs when game time
allocations changed.
Changes to the draw after it is published affected timeslots for games meant that the whole umpire
allocation for that week had to be redone as all allocations needed to be checked. This adds to the task of
doing the umpire allocations. I worked out that it was not beneficial to do the allocations too far ahead as if
they need to be changed the whole allocation had to be redone and rechecked. However having the
allocations worked out weeks in advance is an advantage for clubs who can ensure the allocated umpires
know their allocations early.
Clubs who name Div 1, 2 and 3 players on their grass umpire register make the task of allocating umpires
more complex as I need to consult draws beyond the games I am working on for Downey Park. Sporting
Pulse was not reliable for the correct game times for some games when I was working on allocations weeks
in advance and I ended up allocating umpires to grass games close to their game times at other venues
without realising there was a clash.
18 2012 BWHA Annual Report
One club listed whole teams as the umpires for a particular division. While this is probably an attempt to
ensure all players played their part by doing an umpiring allocation I was not sure of the experience level of
these umpires. Knowing the level of umpire experience and personal confidence levels would be helpful to
consider when doing the allocations. A more formal list of experienced/reliable umpires as deemed by the
people themselves would be preferable to mental notes and impressions gained during the year.
Keeping the umpire registers up to date is an ongoing task. Some clubs are much better at letting BWHA
know when players change divisions or are injured and unavailable etc. I was happy to receive any
information that could affect my allocations or make the allocations better suited to clubs needs. For
example knowing which players needed mentors and which division the mentors played in allowed me to
allocate to minimise clashes, knowing a regular experienced umpire was generally unable to be at Downey
Park for 12:30 etc. Of course not all requests can be taken into account but where possible and when I
know I was happy to oblige such requests. At times I needed to contact clubs to check umpire details or to
negotiate changes. I realise that this is not part of the role and that this could easily lead to the allocations
becoming a more complex job but I was happy to manage this – no promises but all attempts to manage
requests could be considered if I knew of them.
I kept in contact with the Management Committee contact for umpiring (Lesley) in relation to decisions
that needed to be made and difficulties that arose during the year by copying her into emails relating to the
task of umpire allocations. I trust this was a helpful practice.

FACILITY AND DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT
After the floods and disasters of 2011 our fields have recovered and in fact improved due to the diligence of
Noala Gordon and John Robinson. This year has seen a good rainfall, not excessive, with follow up rain in
both June and July. This winter rain is vital as we can only water field 1. Even the goal mouth areas have
not worn as badly as in previous years. To put the task in perspective we maintain 15 full sized hockey
fields and 30 full size goal boxes with two part time staff. They also do any other required maintenance
jobs which includes cleaning toilets at Rasey Park and fields 10 and 13 prior to hockey each Saturday.
Field 1 is now our pride and joy and we actually enjoy the work needed to maintain the standard that has
been achieved. The new, small Toro mower with a grass catcher has been used mainly on field 1 so we can
remove the cut grass to ensure a faster playing surface. The big Toro mower is worth its weight in gold, in
that we can cut Rasey in a morning instead of 2 days. The mower has a 72 inch cutting pan. As always, our
grass problems lie at the start of the season when the grass is growing. Often the grass between fields has
not been cut by Softball and also we need shorter grass than Softball. So we have lots of cut grass which
lies in huge furrows as we have no means of removing it. Softball has a new management committee, so
there is hope, that we can work together in a more consultative manner to resolve our issues.
The cost of maintaining the fields is escalating. The cost of fertiliser is about $30 a bag and we need 8 bags
per field so the cost to fertilise 1 field is $240. The cost of weed spraying is almost prohibitive at $500 per
field and so that is why we are only spraying field 1. We continue to be challenged by our desire to have
perfect fields all season with the limited resources available. If only there were grants for field
maintenance.
My thanks to Noala and John who are such hard and willing workers. Also thanks to Mary McNeil, Ian
Watts, Jenny Tidey and Denise Byrne who ensure that drinks are served with a smile. Best wishes to Joyce
Proctor on her special birthday. Merry Christmas to all, have a safe and happy summer.

the opening day fixtures at Downey Park, an enjoyable afternoon was had by all who attended. Credit must
go to the exceptional people who baked and prepared delicious treats for the afternoon tea and many thanks
to those who assisted with the preparation and the clean up.
The inaugural Super League was hosted by BWHA at the SHC, this was a major undertaking and relied on
the staff of BWHA, Management and some club volunteers. Thank you to all that assisted. We have learnt
a lot this year and will have better plans to manage this type of event going forward.
19 2012 BWHA Annual Report
The Masters Championships was hosted by BWHA this year and was an enormous event run in very trying
conditions. The championship convenor Bronwyn Morris has provided a full report on this for you to read.
Congratulations and thank you to Bronwyn for taking on this task and fulfilling the responsibility so
completely.
The Grass Grand final saw a return to the “Big Match” with the highest division playing the last game of
the season on F1 as the final. This was a great event and showcased the skills and high playing standard of
DP1 and the new field 1.
The Turf trophies and finals were held again in conjunction with BHA, which made for an exciting day,
congratulations to all the winners and competitors.
As I was out of the country for a number of the main events this year I‟d like to take the opportunity to
thank the BWHA office and committee members for taking up the challenges whilst I was away.
Congratulations to the trophy winners and all the best for 2013.

ARCHIVES REPORT
Parts of the archives section are currently being re-housed in another cupboard so as to be more accessible.
This section will comprise mainly of all „records‟. We would like to keep „hard copies‟ up to date so that
there is continuance up to the present time.
By involving more ex-players we are slowly obtaining more names to some of our photographs and will
hopefully continue on with this project.
We are still open to more involvement from current players, club committee members etc. As you know
archives go on and on and in this vein we do need more participation from anyone interested in the history
of the Association. Hopefully this coming year we can get to the cross-reference section making the records
easier to find.

JUNIOR CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
Wow the end of another successful season - off season planning has started for 2013, it doesn't seem that
long ago we were planning 2012.
In spite of the occasional challenges I would like to thank the members of the Junior Committee Sue Carey,
Lorraine Carroll, Helen Hill, Kerryn Kay, Pam McDonald, Kristin Muir, Kelli Robinson and Sonya Taylor
for their time and commitment. The many club volunteers we have, we cannot survive without you
regardless of the task they are all important to running our competition, we are proud of our achievements.
Thank you to all the clubs for taking their turn with the weekly BBQ roster at Rasey Park with all clubs
contributing it certainly lightens the work load.
Field 1 was back in action this year and how fantastic did it look all year! Thanks to the John Robinson,
Noala Gordon and the grounds committee for all their hard work to make this happen. I have never seen
the fields look so good and well-marked each week - thank you.
We trialled a few more things this year with grading, having a bye for a couple of the turf grades which of
course had its down side causing a few other issues with clubs not being able to play at the same venue.
However the fixture & grading committee worked hard to adjust this where possible. We all have to
remember that we play in a Brisbane based competition and yes this does require travelling.
Thank you to our weekly support crew:-
The BWHA office staff
Our Representative Selectors, Coaches and Managers
Charli Hawson who is always a pleasure to work with in the office on Saturday
Aimee Zale our very efficient control room girl
John Thomas and Atherli Cross our sports trainers
The Canteen Staff at Rasey & Downey Parks.
Anna Mehonoshen our U7 & U9 co-ordinator.
Caroline Schomberg, Carolyn Bennett, Katrina Wark, Jen Reid, Jenny Heron, Rebecca Frey,
Kelli Robinson, Rachel Ardern our turf tech officials and umpire mentors.
Our U11 Southern Cross was once again run with the boys U11 Coulter Shield, it was a fantastic day. A
bonus was having Hockey zone come out to film some of the action, which was very exciting.
This is my last year as the Junior Chairperson and I would like to thank the many volunteers who have
helped out during my time in this role. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and watching the
players become passionate about playing hockey and the parents commitment to a sport we love being
involved with. Look forward to catching up around the fields.

Junior Chairperson
JUNIOR COMPETITIONS REPORT
This year we had 97 teams playing in the BWHA competition. 35 Turf teams from 15 clubs and 62 Grass
teams from 19 Clubs. The grading committee this year was Margie Brown, Sue Barsby and Sue Carey
with Sonya Taylor from the Junior committee. Always a difficult job as we try to accommodate all teams
from the paper work that is submitted into appropriate divisions.
TURF
Once again this year we tried to keep as many teams on turf. From the 38 teams nominated we were able to
retain 35 teams in the competition. Due to the turf availability the Grading Committee decided to run 8
teams in JT1, 9 teams in JT2, 9 teams in JT3 and 9 teams in 13T.
We had 8 teams nominate for JT1 and after reviewing team registrations and player lists, all looked to meet
the standard of JT1, but once again this year this division was a stop start season and played only 14 fixture
games. JT2 had 9 teams nominate, it was the committee‟s decision after reviewing team lists submitted and
some grading games that the teams would be strong enough to compete in the JT2 competition with 9
teams. JT3 was the difficult grade as we had 13 teams nominate and once again the turf usage became an
issue as to how many teams would be able to play on the turf time allocated. It was decided after grading
games that 1 team be moved to the 13T competition and making that a 9 team competition as well and with
39 2012 BWHA Annual Report
1 team withdrawing, 2 teams had to miss out. Grading games started on 2nd March and fixture games on
16th March.
We felt that bringing 13T division back to Downey Park, to play on Field 1 for one game a week would
help the girls travelling to State Championships and allow for as many possible teams to participate in the
13T competition.
This year the Junior committee continued with the President‟s Pennant finals competition. The aim of the
President‟s Pennant finals competition was to give the bottom half of the competition a finals round and for
coaches, players the opportunity to experience finals as some teams don‟t get this experience. This year
was received with mixed reactions.
GRASS
Grass grading games ran over a period of weeks starting on the 14 April with teams playing two 30 minute
games each week so teams were able to be seen against the majority of others in the same division.
The JG competition had 16 teams nominate for JG1 – JG3. 5 Teams less than last year. This meant grading
was required, but some clubs requested particular timeslots as they would not be able to field teams. The
decision was to have 2 divisions, 10 teams in the JG1 and 6 teams in the JG2, to try to accommodate all in
this age group, as we lose so many players each year.
The Under 13 grass competition had 21 teams nominate but by the time of organising fixtures were back to
18 and this made a 6 team competition for each 13A, B and C. We watched these teams each week for the
first round and monitored the results and it was decided to move teams from the 13C, B and 13A and that
the 1st round be a grading round.
30 teams nominated for Under 11 and but once again by the time of orgainsing fixtures we were back to 28
teams resulting in 4 divisions in the grade. Once again after the 1st round of games it was highlighted that
movement was required and as for the 13‟s the 1st round became a grading round.
Once the teams were in the appropriate grades, the season settled and all seemed to enjoy their hockey.
Overall, the season was successful, but we need to work on getting more games for the JT1 Turf teams and
the paper work that is submitted needs to have more details to be able to help with the grading process.
Thanks to the grading committee for their hard work Friday nights and Saturday mornings to ensure even
competition across the grades.
Congratulations to those clubs that won premierships.

JUNIOR MATCH SECRETARY REPORT
This year saw a noticeable increase in the level of accuracy in both the registration forms and also the
match sheets. This shows that with a combination of sharing the work load and the clubs being made more
aware of the correct way we need items filled out, the education of the hockey community has lifted to a
good standard. Everyone involved should be proud of the fact that as a whole we are improving. I hope that
all look to improve on our great work we achieved this season.
An area that could improve is the necessity to make sure that paper work is up to date i.e. transfers, paper
work submitted to BWHA and team lists. We can all work on these areas to make life easier.
Helen Hill was my trusty offsider; together we tackled things with a split of the work load. Leah and Regie
where an absolute tower of strength, with every request they had the information back as quick as a flash.
The whole of our hard working committee were very helpful. Charli Hawson was also very helpful on
Saturday mornings in doing searches off the data base and other related tasks.

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT
2012 has been another successful year in the development and progress of our junior umpires. Hard work
by club umpire co-ordinators has seen many of the clubs in the BWHA junior competition support, mentor
and promote new umpires to successfully achieve formalised umpiring accreditations. These umpires have
grown in confidence and ability with the help from many different mentors, patience from players and with
the assistance and rostering from club umpire co-ordinators. Thank you to all those who helped in different
capacities, with a special thanks to Kate West and Jessie Van Huis for their wonderful mentoring and
feedback to the young umpires during the Southern Cross Tournament and throughout the season. A further
thank you to Pam Nitarski who returned to help with the start up process for visiting umpires at the
Southern Cross Tournament and her input proved invaluable to all involved. Lyn Hill again generously
gave up her time and shared her knowledge with all junior club mentors and for this we are all very
grateful, thank you Lyn. A final extension of gratitude goes out to everyone who assisted in turf allocations
and mentoring. We can all be pleased knowing that there is a strong crop of confident and competent junior
umpires in our system.
Kerryn Kay
Junior Committee – Umpire Convener
U7 & U9s REPORT
The Under 7 and Under 9 mixed competition, held at Rasey Park on Saturday mornings continues to grow
and improve each year. With 17 Under 7 teams and 22 Under 9 teams allocated into six divisions, the 2012
season demonstrated the increase of participation and development in our junior hockey. In lead up to the
season, a Rookey Orientation night was held and BWHA invited all U7 and U9 Coaches, Managers, Club
& Team officials, which was a great pre-season introduction to Rookey.
A major highlight of the season was skills day, which was held on May 12th
. This is always an anticipated
event for the children, and to add to the excitement, this year skills day was Olympic themed (with 2012
being an Olympic year). Special Olympic memorabilia was put on show, including the Hockeyroos
uniform and an Olympic Gold Medal provided by ex Hockeyroo player, Lorraine Hillas from the 1988
Seoul Olympics. Once again senior players & QLD representative players were invited to attend as guest
coaches to assist with the skill stations spread across Rasey Park. It is highly beneficial to utilise the talent
and success of our senior players through promoting them to the juniors. This day was not only rewarding
for the little ones, also very fulfilling for the coaches and everyone involved.
Thank you to Anna Mehonoshen (U7/U9 Coordinator) and Atherli Cross (Sports Trainer) who once again
assisted in ensuring an organised and safe season. Their commitment and experience in these roles is
greatly appreciated by BWHA. Thanks to the Junior Committee members who were also present at Rasey
Park each week, it was great to have this extra assistance, as Saturday mornings is always a big event!
A huge thank you to all the club volunteers who assisted with equipment each week and performed their
duty roster on the BBQ – especially the volunteers rostered on the day of the BBQ explosion! Volunteers
are essential in the running of BWHA and the revenue from the BBQ supports in maintenance and
replacement or purchase of equipment at Rasey Park. Thanks to the canteen staff – in particular Olivia
Barsby and Stephanie Shirley for committing to their canteen duties each week, as well as their willingness
to offer their assistance in additional U7/U9 matters.
The Competition finished on a high with our “End of Season Carnival”. The carnival provides many of the
U7 players an opportunity to have a run in an U9 team, to prepare for subbing up or playing in the next
division. The carnival was also a great way to introduce new players who may be interested in playing next
season.
We would like to wish everyone a safe and very happy Christmas and look forward to an exciting 2013
Rookey season.
