Chiang Rai is a mountainous province located at the northern top of Thailand bordering Myanmar (Burma) on the north and Laos on the east, Phayao and Lampang on the south and Chiang Mai on the southwest. It is 785 km. from Bangkok and 182 km. from Chiang Mai and can be reached by plane. Many visitors to Chiang Mai make a side trip to Chiang Rai to admire its scenic beauty, to observe its hilltribes and to see its historic sites. Chiang Rai was built in 1262 by King Mengrai, founder of the kingdom of Lanna Thai. It was twice occupied by Burma after 1648 and became part of Thailand again in 1786. Among Chiang Rai's main attractions are: Phra That Doi Tung where a shrine housing the Buddha's relics atop the 2000-metre Doi Tung attracts worshippers from Laos, Myanmar and Thailand; Chiang Saen Museum which contains ancient Buddha images and antiques; Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet; Mae Sai, a border town from where you can cross into Myanmar; several hilltribes living around Chiang Rai, Mae Chan, Mae Sai and along the Mae Kok River; elephant-riding in the forest; and rafting down the Mae Kok, reputed as one of the most scenic and unspoiled rivers of the world.
