This, our first catalogue of 2014, includes many items which have beeninlaid, a particular feature of some South and West Wales furniture.There are also items featuring ships, and a clock made by EzekielHughes of Machynlleth who was apprenticed to another Welshclockmaker, John Tibbot of Newtown. There are many sources ofhistorical information about this eighteenth century clockmakerbecause he emigrated to USA, bought a plot of land from theGovernment near Paddy’s Run, Ohio and became a respected andimportant member of the community. All of these pieces have ahistory, but it is rare to find so much information about a maker.We hope you enjoy the catalogue and exhibition.

7. Rare miniature Welsh oak bureau/Biwro bychan CymreigThis bureau is very similar in proportion and style to a ‘coffor bach’. It is inlaid with contrastingholly and bog-oak and with the initials ‘WW’. The interior has three small drawers

Ezekiel Hughes was born at Cwmcarnedd Uchaf, Llanbryn-mair,Montgomeryshire in 1767 and was apprenticed to John Tibbot a clockmaker of Newtown in 1786. (The apprenticeship deed is held at theNational Library of Wales). He worked as a clock maker in Machynllethbetween 1786 – 1795. In July of 1795, along with his cousin EdwardBebb he led a group of people from Llanbryn-mair to America, becomingsome of the earliest Welsh settlers in the far west of the U.S.A. Afteravoiding the press gang at Carmarthen, they departed from Bristol inAugust and reached Philadelphia on the 25th of October 1795. Afterbuying land at Paddy’s Run in West Ohio, he returned to Wales in 1802to marry his Welsh wife and returned to Ohio in 1803. He helped manyimmigrants from Wales settle in America and was a founding member ofthe Congregational Church at Paddy’s Run, he was the first magistrate forthat district and was also appointed by the state governors to design anew highway from the river Miami to the town of Hamilton. An unnamed British Barque. The ship’s bow rising out of the waves appears to show her to be ‘copper-bottomed’. Thelower hull of the ship was shrouded in thin Swansea-made copper sheets to prevent marine worms and growth, and soimprove navigability and speed
