Short course description:

The course provides students with the upper-intermediate (B2) level of English lexis, grammar,orthography, phonetics and phonology. Based oncommunicative and competency-based approaches,the course aims to teach students both oral andwritten academic English and develop autonomouslearning and cross-cultural communicative skills.Students improve their phonological, orthographical,grammatical and lexical competencies and developspeaking, listening, writing and reading skills of theupper-intermediate level of academic English. Theform of studies includes lectures, seminars, self-studytasks and work in SANAKO lab and in virtualMOODLE environment.

Course content:

Contents of language skills development:modal verbs and modal words (expressing past andcontinuous grammatical aspects); pronouns anddeterminers; definite, indefinite, and zero articles(general and summarising, listing and specifying,descriptive and limiting attributes); word building;subject, object and other types of relative clauses;punctuation; wish-sentences; passive voice; personaland impersonal forms of passive voice; non-conjugated verb forms (infinitive and gerund).Contents of study skills development:Improving listening, reading, note-taking andacademic writing techniques; organisation ofacademic texts; planning, writing, paraphrasing,writing a bibliography; participating in academicdiscussions, providing academic opinion, analysingand presenting scientific information.Linguistic contents:Mass media, scientific research, economics,

entrepreneurship, art and design, perception andreality, information technologies, ethics and crime inthe virtual world, cultural differences, multiculturalenvironment, pollution and climate change,renewable energy.

Grading and evaluatingstudent work in class and/orat the final exam:

Midterm - 20 %, final test - 30%, class work - 50 %
