TO BE ALIVE IS POWER.

Enriching the cultural life of Aotearoa through an experience of opera that connects, engages and inspires reflection on our human condition.

OUR PURPOSE

We are grateful to Hēmi Kelly, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Tahu-Ngāti Whāoa for providing the Te Reo translations for our purpose and ambition statements.

We would also like to thank James Paratii Lainchbury of Nga Toi Kauaerunga Studio for the kowhaiwhai design.

Leading opera from Aotearoa in a way that reimagines the art form; embraces the cultural and social identities of our diverse communities; and ensures a vibrant andsustainable presence for opera in New Zealand.

OUR AMBITION

3

Our long term strategic goal is to make our Company into a more relevant and inclusive national cultural organisation. We have an ambitious set of strategic goals that include:

STRATEGY• presenting main-scale work

• broadening our regional reach

• moving into new venues with site-specific work to attract new audiences

• investing in new NZ works and commissions to tell our own stories

• supporting and nurturing talent

• increasing the depth of the Artist Development Programme

• engaging with Māori and Pasifika arts and artists

• engaging with and supporting the opera sector in New Zealand

• developing our digital capability to embed our digital offering in future programming

Careful financial management and box office success has meant that we are in a stable position and have generated enough reserves to navigate through COVID lockdowns whilst continuing to support our artists, contractors and suppliers.

In the global information age of the 21st Century the measure of power has become harder to define.Giuseppe Verdi and Francesco Maria Piave’s Macbeth is an astonishing synthesis of Shakespeare’s astute psychological insights into the corrupting power of unchecked ambition matched with music of unprecedented expressive and emotional subtlety.

Our new production of this ambitious music drama aligns substantial resources to support director, designer and video artist Netia Jones, conductor Christopher Franklin, and Phillip Rhodes/Amanda Echalaz in their international role debuts as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. And we harness this opportunity through partnership with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to support two further works in concert aimed to satisfy the most ardent devotee of the genius that is Verdi. The nuances and fantasies behind the power of love in Carousel – a concert performance of one of the greatest musicals of all time by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II - set the scene for Opera on the Harbour.

TO BE ALIVEIS POWER.

A bold new initiative that we hope will evolve to become a regular landmark on the NZ cultural scene. This project is made possible through other important partnerships - Oceania (NW Group), The Show Business, Mediaworks and Auckland Unlimited.Further exploring the measure of power are three new commissions by NZ Opera that play out in different places and spaces across the country. Tim Finn and Célestine Hitiura Vaite’s Ihitai ‘Avei’a - Star Navigator received a staggering response to its world premiere in Auckland 2021. Its beautifully woven narrative poignantly explores the relationship between Tupaia and Cook, two great navigators aboard one ship and the collision in this confinement of their different world views. We are delighted to bring this semi-staged production to Wellington in partnership with Orchestra Wellington. The power of our inner demons is explored in The Strangest of Angels, a work born out of Anna Leese and Kenneth Young’s desire to be involved in the creation of a collaboratively written opera between performer and composer. With a libretto by Georgia Jamieson Emms, we are delighted to partner with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Dunedin Arts Festival to bring this new work to life. The Unruly Tourists by Luke Di

Somma and Amanda Kennedy/Livi Reihana (The Fan Brigade) leads us back to the global information age. Conventional wisdom has always held that the state with the largest military prevails, but in an information age it may also be the state—or non-state actor—with the best story that wins. An acerbic and riotous satire on the media and us.Whatever your take on the measure of power and wherever you manage to catch one of our exciting new productions, as Emily Dickinson’s poem reminds us - to exist at all in this time of pandemic is a powerful miracle and enough.

THE UNRULY TOURISTS

In a tale from living memory, a flock of badly-behaved tourists spread a trail of rubbish and fuel a national obsession. This genre-defying comedy is written by the award-winning duo of Livi Reihana and Amanda Kennedy (The Fan Brigade) and composed by Luke Di Somma.

Presented by New Zealand Opera and Auckland Arts Festival at the Bruce Mason Centre near Takapuna Beach, The Unruly Tourists breaks all the stereotypes you think you know about opera, and will spark conversation long after the curtain goes down.

Contains strong language.

Aboard a cramped British scientific vessel in the vastness of the Pacific, two navigators find themselves locked on a collision course. One is a Tahitian priest, guided by his ancient knowledge of star pathways. The other a naval officer, desperate to prove both himself and his faith in science.

This beautiful and haunting new work by composer Tim Finn with Tahitian monologues by Célestine Hitiura Vaite tells the story of Tupaia, the Tahitian star navigator who sailed with James Cook, on the maiden voyage of the Endeavour in 1769. Ihitai ‘Avei’a - Star Navigator explores the relationship between two master mariners, each from vastly different worlds, both far from home and unable to find their way into each other’s world.

After a sold out world premiere in Auckland in 2021, we are delighted to present Ihitai ‘Avei’a - Star Navigator at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua with Orchestra Wellington

A poignant and imaginative reflection on events during Janet Frame’s time at Seacliff Mental Hospital, The Strangest of Angels is a harrowing and hopeful experience that throws light on mental health then and now. Co-created by Kenneth Young, Georgia Jamieson Emms and Anna Leese, The Strangest of Angels is born of an exciting and conscious collaboration between composer and performers that explores the contrast between a calm, rational psychiatric patient and a traumatised nurse torn between empathy and the relative power of institutional duty.

World premiere performances directed by Friedlander Foundation Associate Artist Eleanor Bishop and starring Anna Leese and Jayne Tankersley. Proudly presented by NZ Opera and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra with the Dunedin Arts Festival.

CALL OF THEForgotten Art Songs of Aotearoa

The Huia was a rare and tapu bird, confined to the Ruahine, Tararua, Remutaka and Kaimanawa mountain ranges in the south-east of the North Island. Their calls were mostly a varied array of whistles, “peculiar and strange”, but also “soft, melodious and flute-like.” The Huia bird is now extinct.

Join Michael Vinten as he takes us on an entertaining, informative and frequently fascinating journey of discovery through the forgotten world of the Art Song of Aotearoa.

We will hear highlights from his recent three volume collection of mainly unpublished pre-1950 New Zealand Art Songs. These songs - sung by our grandparents and great-grandparents - provide a glimpse into the preoccupations and concerns of their times through peace and war. Discover the significant contribution of women both Māori and Pākehā to music-making of this period as composers and poets.

Join us for this unique insight into this important but forgotten chapter of Aotearoa’s musical legacy.

New Zealand Opera has a long-term strategic agenda that seeks to reimagine what opera might mean in New Zealand with the goal of developing our Company into a more relevant and inclusive national cultural organisation. The commissioning and development of new work is integral to delivering this ambitious agenda. By encouraging and supporting new work we are better embracing the diversity and richness of our culture, building an international presence for New Zealand work and listening to how other voices wish to reimagine the experience of opera in New Zealand.

If you would like to submit a proposal for a new work to develop with NZ Opera please email our General Director: [email protected]

Du’a (Prayer) for Broken Shelter

In 2021 NZ Opera and Waikato University worked together to present a workshop presentation of Act One of Du’a (Prayer) for Broken Shelter – a new opera by internationally-acclaimed composer Michael Williams, with librettists internationally-awarded poet Tracey Slaughter and Nida Fiazi. Du’a (Prayer) for Broken Shelter follows the plight of one refugee family who must rise above the wreckage of an unthinkable hate-crime in New Zealand, weaving their voices through a shattered chorus of national grief.

Persephone’s Return

Persephone’s Return is a semi-staged multi-media cantata between the Goddesses Persephone and her mother Demeter. Written by NZ born Greek film maker Vicky Yiannoutsos, it is part one of a series of works, that explores the myth of Persephone as a universal archetype - expressing the themes of migration and identity - which has underpinned her creative practice for more than 30 years. Vicky will collaborate with Composer Briar Prastiti towards a workshop presentation of the piece in 2022.

The New Zealand Opera Chorus is a group of professional singers based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. They form the choruses for New Zealand Opera’s mainscale productions in those cities and perform in concerts with New Zealand’s finest orchestras and for other events throughout the year. New Zealand Opera typically auditions annually and welcomes applications from singers of all backgrounds. For the 2022 season, the chorus will be prepared by Claire Caldwell in Auckland, Michael Vinten in Wellington, and by Andrew Crooks in Christchurch. Productions for the season include Verdi’s Macbeth and in concert Requiem and Il Trovatore.

Supporting the growth of regional talent - Freemasons Foundation Scholarship

The Freemasons Foundation has been a long time supporter of New Zealand Opera and the development of talent through performance opportunities. In 2022 they will be supporting a pilot project whereby we offer up to three singers from the South Island the opportunity to take part in training, mentoring and performance opportunities with New Zealand Opera in Christchurch and Dunedin. This will include supporting them to take part in the Macbeth chorus, and observing rehearsals for The Strangest of Angels.
