The readings of yesterday, Sat. Feb 7th from the book of Hebrews, Psalm 23 and St. Mark’s gospel offer the basis for today’s reflection. The first reading implores us to forever (continually) praise God in all that we think, do and say. This is a reminder of who we are and the state of our relationship with our Creator. In other words, where do we place God in our everyday life. Do we remember Him when we wake up, before we get busy with our daily chores, as we desire to find re- laxation, as we embark on our projects and as we retire for the day? God is with us 24/7 even though at times that is not apparent because He sometimes even allows us space to grow and rediscover Him, not that He has abandoned us. We are also reminded to obey our leaders: in the home, in the community, at the Church and indeed the civic leaders at national level. By obeying those who are placed in authority above us and following the laws of the land, we are contributing to the good order of things. Our leaders should in turn provide for us an environment in which each citizen can grow to his or her full potential without undue dis- crimination. Every citizen will therefore, make mean- ingful contribution to the common good. In obeying leadership we honour God from whom all authority comes. At the end of the day, all our collective ef- forts should bring glory to God’s kingdom. Serving God and His people should be pleasurable and not onerous! It should be our priority. When we create harmony in our homes, communi- ties and society at large, we are acknowledging that God is the provider of everything and He is love. As a country we shall spread peace and goodwill to our neighbours. Today, our country, Zambia, is a haven for men and women of all races, beliefs and cul- tures. We give praise and honour to God for that achievement. May our civic leaders strive to ensure that this status quo is in fact improved upon. We must also remember the works that our spiritu- al leaders carry out on behalf of our Lord. They are the ones charged with the responsibility to ensure that our connection with Jesus and God remains alive. They are the bridges that link this world as we know it to the one beyond, that which is yet to come. They shepherd us on a daily basis to ensure that we do not go astray, even though many times their ef- forts may appear thankless. May God our Father in heaven continue guiding and blessing them. THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD; I SHALL NOT WANT. The readings of yesterday, Sat. Feb 7th from the

book of Hebrews, Psalm 23 and St. Mark’s gospel offer the basis for today’s reflection.

The first reading implores us to forever (continually) praise God in all that we think, do and say. This is a reminder of who we are and the state of our relationship with our Creator. In other words, where do we place God in our everyday life. Do we remember Him when we wake up, before we get busy with our daily chores, as we desire to find re-laxation, as we embark on our projects and as we retire for the day? God is with us 24/7 even though at times that is not apparent because He sometimes even allows us space to grow and rediscover Him, not that He has abandoned us.

We are also reminded to obey our leaders: in the home, in the community, at the Church and indeed the civic leaders at national level. By obeying those who are placed in authority above us and following the laws of the land, we are contributing to the good order of things. SAINTS OF THE WEEK

8 FEBR: ST JOSEPHINE BAKHITA (1869 - 1947). Josephine Bakhita was born near Jebel Agilere in the Sud Darfur (Sudan). Kidnapped when still very young, she experienced the cruelty of slavery as she was sold several times in slave markets of Africa. Finally she was rescued by an Italian family and brought to Italy where she not only became a Christian but also felt the call to consecrate her life to God as a sister. She joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity and lived the rest of her life at Schio, a small village near Vicenza. She died on 8 February, 1947.

10 FEBR: ST SCHOLASTICA (480 - 547). She was born in Nursia in about 480, the twin sister of St Benedict. She was dedicated to God from an early age and followed her brother to Cassino, where she died in about 547.

11 FEBR: OUR LADY OF LOURDES. In 1858 the immaculate Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, near Lourdes in France, in the cavern called “de Massabielle.” Through this poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Mary calls on sinners to change their lives. She has inspired in the Church a great love of prayer and good works, especially in the service of the poor and the sick.

14 FEBR: ST METHODIUS (826? - 885). He was born in Thessalonica. With his brother Cyril he went to Moravia to preach the faith. They translated liturgical texts into the Slavonic language and invented the Glagolithic and possibly also the Cyrillic alphabet. After his brother’s death he went to Pannonia, where he was assiduous in the work of evangelization. In the complicated international politics of the time he suffered much from attacks by his enemies, but he was always supported by the Popes. He died on 6 April 885.

14 FEBR: ST CYRIL (827? - 869). He was born in Thessalonica and was educated in Constantinople. With his brother Methodius he went to Moravia to preach the faith. They translated liturgical texts into the Slavonic language and invented the Glagolithic and possibly also the Cyrillic alphabet. They were called back to Rome, where Cyril died on 14 February 869.

LENTEN SEASON will start soon (Ash Wednesday, 18th February). Let us start bringing last year’s palms for making the Ashes for Ash Wednesday. Let us bring them to our respective Churches.

Last Sunday Feb. 1st, 2015 the Archdiocesan Theme for 2015: THE YEAR OF THE CONSECRATED LIFE AND INTE-

GRAL DEVELOPMENT was launched at a very colourful Mass at Christ the Redeemer Church. Mass was celebrated outdoors to accommodate the big number of Christians who turned out to witness the occasion. Above picture on the right shows part of the altar and the congregation. It was at the same event that the Parish Priest Fr. Mroz introduced the new Parish Pastoral Sister, Sr. Maria de Jesus Velazquez (popularly known as Sr. Chuy) Comboni Missionary Sisters. Above left, the outgoing Parish Pastoral Sister, Sr. Elise Mwamba, hugging her successor. Following Mass there were meals , drama and games such as netball, football and volley ball at the church grounds. Full report soon.
