But this Nissan can carry 900 kg with ease and still handles like... well, not like a bakkie! Okay, let’s start at the beginning. Nissan SA delivered the 3,0 dCi 4x4 auto d/k V9X on a hot summer’s day. It already looked hot with its charcoal colour and I decided to park it in the shade and take it for a spin later. I got in and started it. This can't be a diesel, I thought. I shifted to reverse, and the screen lit up on the dash, showing me every detail of what was going on behind me. Having driven off, I missed the shade and came back an hour later! This Navara has traction control, but the turbo lag is a killer! Around town the V9X is simply difficuilt to drive; you need a huge gap to cross traffic, especially when turning right. With the seven-speed auto box, it is quite a different story on the open road, though! You can hardly hear the V6 and with the excellent Bose sound system – oh brother, what a pleasure! By far its most impressive feature as far as driving is concerned was its overtaking acceleration. The potent V6 went from 80 – 120 km/h in 7,8 seconds! Fully loaded, it took only about a second longer! By the way, the auto box also has a “sports” mode and there is also an option to select the gears manually. That should be very useful when driving in 4x4 mode. Personally, I feel the V6 power plant is overkill and, for R100 000 less, you can buy the 2,5 DCI...
