▎OverviewTokai University is a private university established by Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae in 1942. “Tokai” of “Tokai University” refers to the sea to the east of Asia, namely the Pacific Ocean, and symbolizes the desire to foster a rich spirit and broad perspectives. Tokai University consists of 8 campuses in Sapporo, Takanawa, Yoyogi, Shonan, Isehara, Shimizu, Kumamoto, and Aso, which are comprised of 19 schools made up of 75 departments, It has 31 courses in 17 graduate schools. The total student population is approximately 30,000. The founding spirit and objectives of Tokai University are to contribute to human society, to foster active, talented people and to arouse interest in our earth and a sense of responsibility for the future of mankind. Tokai University's educational guidelines ground these objectives by offering a sound and reliable way of thinking as a basis for living and cultivating the richness of humanity. The core of such education at Tokai University is the “Lecture on Modern Civilization.” Since its establishment, Tokai University has prioritized this lecture, based on its belief that a university should not only provide knowledge and technology, but also be a place where the richness of humanity and creativity in each individual is cultivated. One recent initiative that we have been directing our energies toward is fostering of student-initiated projects to nurture our students' ability to apply the knowledge that they have acquired in the classroom to the betterment of society. The projects that we have supported range from the creation of the world's-fastest solar car “Tokai Challenger,” to volunteer activities that assist in recovery efforts in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Tokai University maintains academic exchange agreements with 123 universities/organizations in 39 countries. A wide range of international exchange activities are being actively pursued, from those on the academic front involving students, researchers, joint-research projects, and the exchange of academic resources, to cultural and athletic exchanges. There are about 960 international students on campus. Tokai University has 5 offices abroad (Denmark, Vienna, Hawaii, South Korea and Thailand.)

Tokai University is ranked in the Wor ld University Ranking of QS and Times Higher Education.

Student VoiceOrankitjaroen NutchaCountry ThailandSchool Political Science and EconomicsYear 3rd Year

Q Why did you choose Japan as a destination to study abroad?A I chose to come to Japan because I think Japan is a really fascinating country. I was always interested in how Japan

has achieved this economic level. Japan is a relatively small country compared to other top economies in the world. Regardless, Japan has shown the world that it can thrive and has done so really well. Another reason is that I am fond of the way Japanese people do business. It is hard to argue when you talk about the unique style of Japanese business. The Japanese always think about customers. Coming to study in this country has been a great opportunity for me to learn about Japanese culture, and this also enables me to understand more about Japanese economy and business. I also hope that I can use what I learn in Japan to develop the Thai economy and help bridge the gap between Japan and Thailand, as the two countries have a close relationship in many areas such as international trade and business.

Q Tell us the reason you chose Tokai University.A When I was looking for the university I wanted to attend, I had a couple of choices and one of them was Tokai

University. Among all of my choices, Tokai is a really good university with a lot of support provided for international students. Tokai University also has its own language school which means the university has experience with how to help

international students. It is important for me to take this into account because if the university has a good support system, students can relax and focus on studying. It is nice to be surrounded by Japanese culture, but I have some international experiences as well. We need to learn Japanese culture, but we also need some space to be ourselves and Tokai has this kind of environment. I think it is a good combination for international students. Moreover, Tokai also offers a seminar for economics majors starting from the first year. It is attractive, since I can use the basic knowledge about economics I learned and adapt my knowledge to social and economic problems in the seminar. Because of all these reasons, I chose to come to study here.

Q Tell us the good points about Tokai University.A First, I really like the university and its location. The university is big and is surrounded by nature, which I love. The university’s area also has some restaurants

and it is convenient for students to get food. I was born and raised in a really big city, so it is nice to live in Shonan campus because it is not a big city, but I can take a train for around 15 minutes and get to the mall. I think this is a perfect combination for students. Second, I really like the Seminar offered by economics department. I have to admit that writing reports in the seminar was a hard job for me at first, but doing it over and over again really let me practice writing good economic reports. I have a good impression with the seminar I took, and it also gives me a better understanding of the Japanese economy and its problems. Third, I know that Tokai has a good support system for international students, but after I attended the university I really felt that I made the right decision. The university offers visa services, scholarships, tuition exemption, etc. to international students. I was impressed by all of these. Lastly, Tokai has a study abroad program which is fantastic, since it gives us the opportunity to explore the world more.

Q How would you like to utilize the experience you had in Tokai University?A By studying here, I improved many skills that I need in life. Tokai University taught me more than economics. I gained many perspectives about life from this

university. Tokai University also gave me the chance to study abroad in America, which I cannot be more grateful for. After I graduate, I would like to work in Japan to use all my linguistic skills. I also want to experience more of Japanese working culture and business. After that I hope to study abroad for my Masters because I want to use my experiences and knowledge from Tokai University to explore the world. I hope that one day I can use my economic knowledge to develop the world to be a better place and society for the next generation. I want to work in an organization like United Nations.

Q Please write a message to international students who are thinking of coming to Tokai University.A You are going to have awesome experiences here. Tokai University is a good university to learn both Japanese culture and international culture. The university

offers many opportunities for you to thrive and learn new things. It offers a ton of courses in many areas such as a third language, information technology, businesses, etc. It really depends on you how much you want to take them. It does not matter what your ethnicity is or what major you are. The university will give you the same opportunities as other students. For those who are going to come here, I bet that you will have a fabulous time. Take as many of the opportunities as you can because they will be beneficial to you in many ways. Of course, there will be some trouble and difficulties to overcome, but as long as you keep going and never give up, you will achieve your goals. Just like the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait.
