On 5 May, Japan celebrates Kodomo no Hi, a festival dedicated to boys and girls. To celebrate, they fly kites in the shape of koi, a common carp fish, with a wide variety of colours.

Follow these instructions to make a koi carp fish with coloured paper, take a photo and share it on social media on 5 May to commemorate Kodomo no Hi with us. You can do this with these tags:

What do we need?• A cardboard cylinder -- you can reuse a toilet paper or kitchen towel roll.• Coloured paints.• A paintbrush.• Glue stick.• Coloured tissue paper.• Scissors.• About two lengths of string.

1. First paint the cardboard cylinder one colour and draw scales on it with

wavy lines. Don’t forget to paint very big eyes with black and white paint.

2. Then cut strips of tissue paper and stick them on the inside of the cardboard tube to represent the carp’s tail. You can also cut out a couple of circle shapes to

act as fins.

3. Then cut a very thin strip of paper and stick it on the outside of the tube to

represent the lips of the fish.

4. Then make two holes on either side of the mouth and pass the string through it, which you should fasten with a knot at each end. Make sure there is enough

string left so that the fish can be hung upside down.© FBO / Vàngelis Villar

as various activities on Japanese culture and sport.

If you would like to find out more about the Tokyo Olympic Games and Japanese culture, you can come and see the exhibition

organised and produced by the Barcelona Olympic Foundation with the support of the Japanese Consulate in Barcelona.
