HOW TO FIND US AT COMPAMED 2018
Tokyo is the capital and the economic, political and cultural center of Japan. Above all, there are a great number of small and medium-sized enterprises in Tokyo with exceptional products and advanced technologies that are leading Japan’s industries.
To spur on the nation’s industries, we, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, have been supporting these SMEs with their develop-ment of products and sales channels.
As continuous, long-term growth is projected for the medical devices industry, we have established an international business hub for life sciences and are endeavoring to gather industry, academia, and public organizations together.
The Tokyo Pavilion consists of 10 Tokyo-based SMEs that have earned a reputation both in Japan and overseas for their advanced technologies and superior products.
Each booth has Japanese-German interpreters available to provide you with explanations and facilitate business negotiations.
We hope that you will try out the technologies and products at the Tokyo Pavilion and experience the capabilities of Tokyo’s companies for yourself and perhaps, unearth opportunities to do business with Tokyo’s SMEs.

Global Niche Top Companies award recipients
Tokyo: a city where SMEs shine
Aside from the large number of global companies headquartered in Tokyo, our city is also home(1) to around 450,000 SMEs that range from historical companies producing traditional crafts, to up-and-com-ing startups creating the latest trends. SMEs in Tokyo are not con-fined only to playing the role of subcontractor for big companies, but are also innovators of unique technologies that cannot be emu-lated despite the smaller scale of their business. Moreover, numer-ous Tokyo SMEs hold the top market share in global markets for their industry. In the Global Niche Top Companies Selection 100, an award by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry which bestows hon-orable recognition to companies holding high market shares in global markets and niche fields, sixty-nine SMEs were selected. Of these, Tokyo SMEs made up the largest number of any prefecture, totaling 14 recipients.(2)

Exhibiting companies housing great potential
Many SMEs which are highly regarded in the global medical device market are located in Tokyo. For example, one SME in Tokyo devel-oped an “intracephalic aneurysm clip” for preventing rhexis in cere-bral arteries, and the product has gone on to be used all over the world. The SME also holds one of the biggest global market shares. Another SME which developed a “painless injection needle” as small as the needle of a mosquito, also enjoys an overwhelming global mar-ket share.
Like the two SMEs mentioned, many Tokyo SMEs have attained a prominent presence in the global market through the acclaim gar-nered for their technical capabilities.
Likewise, the companies participating in the Tokyo Pavilion this year each possess technologies that are both remarkable and unique in spite of their small business sizes. It is the great potential of these companies which led to their selection for the Tokyo Pavilion.
