Poland, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia)
• City of Stuttgart as a leading partner
• 7 pilot applications (Celje (development), Vienna (Salzburg &
Vienna – tool semantics), Stuttgart, Wroclaw, Bratislava, Milan, Prague)
• Funded by Central Europe program and EU regional
development fund
• Project budget of 1,3 million euro
• 3 years

Project goals
1. Reduction of soil consumption / soil sealing (German
goals for 2020)
2. Sustainable use of soils (considering soil functions)
3. Embedding soil information into spatial planning and
urban management practices
4. To gain benefits for society and the environment

Tools
1. Ecosystem Soil Quality (ESQ)
2. Loss of soil resource
3. Soil contamination
a. Children's playground areas
b. Recreational areas
c. General agriculture
4. Sealing rate
5. Agricultural Soil Quality (ASQ)
6. Water drainage (WD)
7. Connectivity tool (CNT)
8. Proximity tool (PROX)
Nutrient status (NS)

Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Nutrient status (NS)
Supplementary tool which assess the
content of basic soil nutrients
(N,P,K) expressed as grid.
• interpretation of soil nutrition in 5
class quality system.
• The result was needed
the essential input data for other
tools.

Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Reflects soil capacity to perform
essential soil functions
• Multifunctional role of soils in one index.
• Regardless the land use
• ESQ stands for the quality
of soil in its broadest sense.
Ecosystem soil quality (ESQ)
B.Vrščaj, T.Vernik , M.Šinkovec, J.Bergant
Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Loss of Soil Resource (LSR)
Evaluates the loss of soil resource
• Assesses the impact of land use change
(soil sealing) on the soil resource
• Enables to compare different scenarios
(multiple assessments)
B.Vrščaj, T.Vernik , M.Šinkovec, J.Bergant
Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Soil contamination (SCx)
Evaluates the soil contamination
according to the national threshold
values
• SC Food for agricultural production
• SC Play for children playgrounds.
• SC Sport for sporting areas.
B.Vrščaj, T.Vernik , M.Šinkovec, J.Bergant
Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Agricultural soil quality (ASQ)
Defines the suitability / quality of
land (not soil) for general agriculture.
• Agricultural suitability of certain plot of
land in a single index
• Calculation also considers “proximity to
urban” (compacting not expanding)
B.Vrščaj, T.Vernik , M.Šinkovec, J.Bergant
Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Sealing rate (SR)
Calculates soil sealing rate within the analysed
area.
• rate of sealed / unsealed soils)
• the distribution/distance of/to green areas
• The ratio is then used to
argument the need for new
green areas in the city
B.Vrščaj, T.Vernik , M.Šinkovec, J.Bergant
Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Water drainage (WD)
The WD tool is used to assess the
risk of water logging on flat non
sealed soil.
• It assess the extent of low infiltration
rates
• visualises the possibility of water
logging on flat areas
B.Vrščaj, T.Vernik , M.Šinkovec, J.Bergant
Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Connectivity (CNT)
Assesses the relation of the
analysed area to other
objects (e.g. distribution of
green parks (poly), location
data (point), etc.).
• Relationship between the
different objects and their
distances/impact to green areas
in the city (points or polygons)
• Used for planning green corridors
in the city.

Agricultural institute of Slovenia
EUROSOIL 2012, Bari, Italy1
Proximity (PROX)
This tool describes the increased
benefits available to inhabitants
living closer to opened areas with
undisturbed, quality soil (eg. parks,
recreational areas...)
• The partners from Milano wanted to
introduce a tool which will help them to
evaluate the value of housing plots

System properties
• Input data: ESRI (shp, grid)
• Open source based (Autodesk MapGUIDE -
visualisation, GRASS open source GIS - calculations)
• Raster processing
• System flexibility of the essential importance (Data
availability, Soil evaluation practices, Local Environmental
conditions (SOM, pH), Legislation…)
Only a highly flexible system can satisfy all: • Datasets
• Algorithms (tool equations)

Desktop Tool
• When GIS not available
• MS Excel based
evaluation of soil data
• Calculation / assessment
• Tools: • Agricultural soil quality
• Environmental soil quality
• Loss of soil resources
• Soil Contamination (Play, Food,
Sport)
• Water Drainage
• Nutrient status
