Potentate’s Message

ROCKY McWILLIAMSIt’s a humbling honor to be elected to

serve as Potentate of Midian Shrine for 2017. To me, the Potentate’s position is not so much a position of authority but a position of trust to conduct the affairs of Midian in accordance with the Nobility’s wishes. I accept the responsibility to be the spokesman for Midian and always be alert to do the bidding of the Nobles.

I designed the Midian Potentate lapel pin with a thumbprint and the Silent Messenger. It’s not my thumbprint but each of yours, each Shrine Nobles. Craft-masons, long ago, signed for their wages with a mark or thumbprint. Today our thumbprint can be used for identification. It distinguishes us from one another.

It’s who we are. The Silent Messenger signifies what we are and what we do. We are a fraternity of men dedicated to having fun while supporting the world’s greatest philanthropy, the Shriners Hospitals for Children. I hope you and your lady will wear the pin with honor and pride.

Listed below are some ideals Lady Bev and I put together to keep in mind as we proceed through this year together:

PURPOSE - Encourage awareness of our fraternity based on fun and Masonic principles while improving the lives of children through our network of hospitals.

TEAM - Together, we’re better.FUN - Work hard, laugh often.RESPECT - Treat others like you’d want

First Lady Notesby BEV McWILLIAMS

What an exciting time for Rocky and me at Midian Shrine! We are looking forward to a fantastic year with all the Nobles and their Ladies.

I want to share a little about Rocky and myself in these monthly messages. So, let’s start with the beginning. Rocky and I have known each other forever! I’ve known about Rocky since grade school. Rocky’s great aunt and uncle, who lived in Benton where I lived, were like grandparents to me. They were always telling a “Rocky” story! I had heard about him before I’d met him! He attended Towanda Grade School and I attended school in Benton. Our grade schools competed against each other in sports and had music festivals/concerts together. We both attended Circle High School. We had many classes together and started dating during our senior year. Rocky was very popular, very athletic (playing every sport) and also talented in music. I was quiet, the competent Student Council type and a talented musician. Fast forward, Rocky and I just celebrated our 45th Wedding Anniversary on January 7th. There are many stories between high school and today. I’ll share a little each month so you’ll know us better.

I want to say thank you to Noble Larry Tomes and Lady Michelle, our Chief Aides, and to their exceptional teams of aides for arranging everything for the Election Night, the Installation and Reception. Not only has this group helped with those events but they also took down the Christmas decorations at Midian, and cleaned and reorganized the “storage room”. They even bought clear tubs, filled them with decorations and arranged the tubs by season/event in the storage room. Great start to a terrific year!

A thank you also goes out to Noble Gene Trivitt and Lady Sherry for their assistance with the Christmas “take down” and helping with the Installation. Thank you, members of Midian Motor Patrol unit and Butler County Shine Club for preparing and providing the hors d’oeuvres for the Installation Reception. Everything was delicious and looked fantastic! Thank you, Ill. Sir John Auch and Lady Julie for coordinating the refreshments.

Rocky and I are honored to serve as Potentate and First Lady for Midian Shrine in 2017. We will do our best to make it a great year. We appreciate your comments of encouragement and support as we begin the journey and hope to see you at many of the events this year. Together, let’s have fun as we keep our purpose in mind. Hugs!

Sumner County RICK BROWNReporters

Howdy, folks! Gawl darnitt, dat January just flowed on by. We’re into February already. Jus’ seemed like last year Ole Geno was askin me to step and be on da line for Sumner County. He said, “It’ll be five years afore you’re president.” And looky here, they done made me vice-president. And it’s hard to fill them big shoes, ‘specially since Winston Smith, Mr. President, puts his on the wrong feet. But mamma say dat’s none o’ my business.

Well, we all got our occifers installed in. We couldn’t say dem big words, but they say the Shrine would understand. So we jus’ put up our weddin’ ring finger hands and said “uh-huh” and poof, we is in charge, Scary, huh?

Boy, we all snuck down to Howard, Kansas, and crashed the Elk County New Year’s Eve Party. But I reckon by now you seen it on Crime Stoppers. Well, it weren’t that bad, but dem dere Cooksons done got scared and thought my white pickup was the Feds. Ole Man Cookson and that dranged on, Derik, done went and blowed up their still. Think my Fed Ex jacket tipped him off. Hee, hee. He thought we was the real Feds, not just the people who lose their freight. I think it’s the atmosphere up there. Well, after Shirkey calmed them down, Hurley went and stole ole Jimmy Cross’s still from his farm up in Greenwood County. Tee, hee. They was adrinkin’ and talking ‘bout corn and such. We sure had a good ole time there. Thanks,

guys. Sorry we didn’t know you had indoor plumbing, but the

lady cop was nice and even had toilet paper in her car. Who knew?

Well, we got the Super Bowl party comin’ up on February 5th at the Oasis

Bar. Hope ya’ll come up; we might need a ride! Momma don’t let me play the foosball, but I don’t think she will care if I jus’ watch. We also got a couple 3 or 4 more new guys to join our group. It’s only $10.00 a year to join, and you get to see me! Come on, guys. Dat’s less than my bail money in Howard, Kansas. I said I was gonna pay you back, Shirkey. Jeeze loweeze! Well, I better close for now. Like Potentate Rocky McWilliams says, “The more, the merrier,” or something like that.

P.S. Geno, is dat company car on its way? Uncle Hoovie and Bob Hermann done went down to Oxford Mower and stole me a whole bunch of gas fer it. I tole him we would steal it from Jeremy Phillipps’ parents, but Shirkey says dat’s sail boat fuel and it won’t work. Boy, he’s a smart man. He’s gonna be a shrimp boat captain like Lieutenant Dan someday. Okay, I’ll see you next month. Bye fer now.

P.P.S. A few of our members don’t like how long and involved my articles are, so this reporter is steppin’ down from the job and letting Farold Hoover take over as reporter next month.

Harper County CARSON DENTONReporters

Hello, everybody! What an awe-some start it has been to a promising new year. The Midian party was the place to be on NYE to hail in the new year. As usual, the Buckin’ T’s were the most silent unit in attendance, but we had a great time nonetheless. At certain points it may have appeared that we were practicing a fire drill, rolling around on the floor, but rest assured we were not. One of our members fell victim to notorious prankster, Judy Acord, who mercilessly sent him flying out of his chair. Apparently that wasn’t enough mischief to fill her night’s quota, because I think she buttered up the dance floor, making it extremely difficult to stay upright while shaking a leg.

We had a great turnout at our Buckin’ T Christmas party. I think it’s definitely safe to say that everybody had a great time. Big

thanks to all of the Shrine Ladies for making a wonderful

meal and for everything they did to help make the party happen. Thanks also to Reiferd Acord for bringing his

karaoke machine, which provided end-less entertainment. By the end of the night, the room was full of Hollywood-bound stars. We even had a celebrity guest appearance of Marvin Lee Aday, better known as Meatloaf. (Or maybe it was a delusional drunk yelling at the microphone, I can’t remember.)

We are extremely excited and very honored to receive a trophy from Midian for gaining the most new members in 2016. We hope and intend to keep the ball rolling and gain many new members this year!

Hopefully everybody made it through the holiday season in one piece and is enjoying the start of 2017. Till next time, God bless!

Barber County MARK PHILLIPSReporter

Greetings, fellow Nobles & Ladies! Hope you all had a wonder-ful holiday! The holidays went by really quick for me and, wow, hard to believe it’s another new year! Also hope everyone survived the rain and ice storm. I know certain areas had lots of ice.

Our unit had our regular meeting on Jan 2 with good attendance. Liaison Eli Irvin once again discussed all current events and the many upcoming activities. Eli also announced that he is in the run for trustee at the stated meeting on the 18th of January and asked for our support, which we will certainly give. Eli has been an outstanding liaison for us and we wish him the best of luck and support. Thanks, Eli!

The meeting then turned to focus on the upcoming nut fry on Feb 6th. Many details and plans were discussed There will be two buses available this year for the ride from

Wichita. We thought this would work since the ladies are

invited this year. The busses will load at Midian at 3 p.m., departing at 3:30; the projected return time for leaving

Kiowa is 10:30 p.m. The cost is $60.00 each for the bus ride. This includes food and drinks. Prices this year for others who don’t ride the bus are as follows: Men are $25.00 for food only, and $35.00 for food and drinks. Women are $20 for food only and $30 for food and drink. The location for the event is the Plum Thickett Inn, 1215 Main St., Kiowa, KS. There will be a ride home provided for local people if needed. For more information about the bus ride, contact Dan Countryman, 620-899-9478.

Best wishes to all and remember, don’t let your Fezz get fuzzy, recruit and enjoy life. Until next time!

Greenwood County CARL “C.F.” COXReporter

We have started off the new year with our last official meeting of the Greenwood County Shrine Club and the 3-Wheelers as two separate organizations. Many thanks to our outgoing leadership: our 3-Wheeler Captain, Noble Jim Cross and Lady Colleen; our President, Noble Dave Pate PP and Lady Pat; and our Liaison Officer, Noble Gary Gelvin and Lady Denise. The transition over to a single unit/club has been very smooth and it’s largely due to this group. Our new leadership has been formally installed at the Midian Installation Ceremony on January 21st at the Kansas Masonic Home.

Just a reminder that we have a group go-ing out to Dodge City to assist our Nobility to the west with their Shrine Circus on February 24-26. The group is heading out Friday and will return Sunday and they are staying at the Casino for a little extra entertainment when not at the Circus. If interested, Noble Jim Cross and Noble Steve Richard have the details. It’s not too late to get involved, and the more the merrier.

Speaking of the circus: Our circus is coming up April 21-23 at Intrust Arena. You will be getting a letter in the mail explaining the voucher process instead of a book of vouchers this year. We are also going to need to seek donations for the t-shirts for the

kids; however, the tickets for our school kids have already been

taken care of, so we will not need to buy tickets for the school. If you want tickets for your personal use, please

buy your Nobility tickets as this helps our commission. Another way to help us out is to sell advertising in the program. Our Circus Chairman, Noble Francis Chaplin, has all the details.

This winter has been a busy time for some of our members welcoming grandbabies into the world. Congratulations to Noble Francis Chaplin and Lady Sunni on their granddaughter born Nov. 28 and Noble Steve Julian and Lady Sissy on TWO grandbabies in December, a granddaughter born Dec. 11 and a grandson born Dec. 28. I’ll bet there is lots of spoiling going on in these households!

Finally, I must report that the Black Camel has taken one of our log time members. Noble Ed Fry passed on December 25 and has now returned to that house, not made with hands, with our Supreme Architect. Noble Ed was very active in years past, was a 50-year member of Midian, and a long-time Circus Dad to the Hamilton school kids. He is survived by his Lady Lila of the home.

As I close this month, don’t forget your lovely lady on February 14th!

The Circus: A gentleman by the name of Philip Astley created this very beautiful concept in a tiny grass field in the sleepy little town of Waterloo (London) ... THE CIRCUS … back in 1742!!!!! Happy Birthday to the circus! Consequently, he hired acrobats, rope-dancers, and jugglers, inter-spersing their acts between his equestrian displays. Another addition to the show was a character borrowed from the Elizabethan theater, “The CLOWN”, who filled the pauses between acts with burlesques of juggling, tumbling, rope-dancing, and even trick-riding. With that, the modern circus — a combination of equestrian displays and feats of strength and agility — was born. Astley opened Paris’s first circus, the Amphithéâtre Anglois, in 1782.

The first element of this rather gran-diose title was to be adopted as a generic name for the new form of entertainment, the circus. In 1793, British equestrian John Bill Ricketts (1769-1802), opened the first circus in the United States, in Philadelphia. In 1797, Ricketts also established the first Canadian circus, in Montréal. His only competition in America, the British equestrian Philip Lailson (who came to the U.S. in 1795), brought the circus to Mexico in 1802. Happy Birthday to The Greatest Show, to the brightest of the Sun, to the luxurious chapiteaux, to the tiny traveling tents, to the perfect ring, to the dust of the tanbark, to veins full of sawdust, to trains carrying huge, hand-carved wooden wagons and magic, trucks packed with everything that they own, to desire, to strength,

To passion, to wild animals, and exotic beasts, to performers, to trainers, to clowns, to acrobats, to daredevils, to friends, to family, to families-dynasties- generations of artisans and talent, to schools for American clowns or for Russian gymnasts or for Chinese contortionists, to the tireless crew, to the lights, the sights, to music, the sound, to the smells, to being larger than life but fitting into suitcase, to legends, to the first time ever, and the last step off the floor, to what the audience does not know, and to what the audience remembers for the rest of their God-given lives, to the eyes of a child, to the smiles of an aged adult, to laughter, to love, to heartbreak, to flying, to grace, to beauty, to dare, to colors that burst, to worlds away, and to bringing the world to you, to applause, to cheers, to excitement that shakes the rafters, to standing in the ring and knowing that at that moment you - you matter to that audience, to that show, to the whole world and in return you would give them anything, just to entertain them!

Congratulations to our newly elected potentate and divan. Hope we all make this a great year for ALL! As for BCSC, our newly elected officers are Chris Nelson, President; Kent Butz, Treasurer; and Arv Krumins, Secretary. Many thanks are given to all those that were present to vote and to provide confidence in those elected. Thank you to all elected for taking on the challenges that come with keeping this club going. We appreciate the road paved by our predecessors and look for guidance and support from current and fu-ture members. You have heard it before and you will continue to hear it – membership is important -- be it retention, participation, or finding new friends and brothers to share the fun and the accomplishments of the Shrine.

I for one would like to extend a special THANK YOU to President Chris Nelson for accepting the reins again. Though reluctant to be in this hotspot again, he is

trying new things in an effort to bolster participation. First of

all, participate if you can. Second, give him a call and give him your thoughts. That’s right: we want all

BCSC members to chime in to provide their candid views. Some other view may win out, but the exchange can be fun and invigorating.

I have received word that Noble Bob Banks’s Lady Norma Banks has been taken by the black camel. Our condolences go out to Noble Bob and his family. Noble Bob passed this duty on to me after several years of doing a great job. If he and Norma had not moved to Grove, Oklahoma, he might still be doing these reports.

Our next meeting is scheduled for February 22nd at Midian Shrine. The location for the social on February 24th will be provided on the next card.

Misfits “Nobody likes a Charlie in the

box” echoed across the ball room at the December Stated meeting, as Illustrious Sir Bart Ogden signed the bylaws and made The Midian Shrine Misfits the newest club at Midian Shrine.

What are the Misfits? Well, the Midian Shrine Misfits were formed as a membership tool by Membership Chairman Robert Hoch and Ceremonial Director Mike Ward along with, now Assistant Membership Doug Chartier, to get Nobles engaged at Midian. The purpose behind the Misfits is to encour-age Nobles, young and old, to participate and parade. If you have a parade vehicle from a unit that is disbanded or no longer meets, you can be a Misfit. If you cannot afford a certain unit vehicle, but you have something sitting in the garage collecting dust, get it tuned up and become a Misfit. If you wish to build interest in another type of unit, get your vehicle out and promote it. If you have friends in a car/bike club that want something more, they can become a Mason and a Shriner and then parade as a Misfit. The possibilities are endless!

If you have a go cart, dirt bike, rock crawler, tractor, barstool racer, mud truck, bicycle, roller skates, unicycle, riding lawn-

mower, dune buggy, 4-wheeler, hover round, skateboard, a farm

truck, etc., ANYTHING that you want to parade, you can be a Misfit.

Some of the parade vehicles that we have now and that are in the works include

these: the Harvey Co. Hobo’s Caboose, T-Bucket wheel barrow go cart, an Air Capitol Eagle, a shopping basket go cart, a John Deere tractor, and a Muskun Dune Cat go cart.

The Misfits first meeting will be Thursday, February 23, at 7 p.m. in the East meeting room; bring your Fez. If you are interested in becoming a Charter Member of the Midian Misfits, the cost is $50 along with a $25 donation to the mobile hospitality unit. The Charter will close at the end of February. Regular yearly dues are $20.

Midian agreed to help John Muir and Kim Wilkinson and The Wichita Running Company with their Saint Patrick’s Day 5K race at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 11th, and Immediately following the race will be our debut parade and the kickoff to Midian’s parade season with the Delano Saint Patrick’s Parade! Line up at Lawrence Dumont Stadium at 11:00 a.m. Get up bright and early: Saturday, March 11, is going to be a fun day to be a Shriner!

It is still cold outside for golf, but it is time to start meeting. We had our first meeting January 30th. If you did not get

a card, call Kyle and let him know. We will meet at 7:30 p.m. on February 27th and March 27th.

Midian Classics CLIFF PREMER Reporter

It’s still winter, but the Classics have started shining up their cars, getting ready for parade season. This year’s first parade is the Delano St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 11th. This is always a fun parade and we’re looking forward to a great turnout. We’re also looking at a possible road trip to the Kansas Race Museum in Chapman. This should be a fun opportunity and would include chicken dinner at the Brookville Hotel in Abilene.

Thank you to Classics President Jim Groff for his service as Midian’s Marshall for 2016. This last year was Jim’s first year as our President and not only did he jump onboard with that responsibility, he also stepped up and volunteered to serve on the Divan as well. Jim and Lady Judy put in a lot of extra effort this past year so please let them know you appreciate their dedication when you see them next.

Reminder, it’s time to pay our annual unit dues. They are

$35. Please get those turned in to our Treasurer, Illustrious Sir Terry Schrant.

Happy birthday wishes to Nobles Daryl Crotts, Bob Griffith, Gary Harris and Ladies Lee Griffith and Jan Harris. Happy anniversary to Noble Daryl Crotts and Lady Janice.

Are you interested in Classic Cars? Come join the fun with the Midian Classics. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Pyramid Room at 7:00 PM. If you’re interested in finding out more about the Classics, contact Noble Bob Giesen at 316-721-4178, or stop by during one of our meetings.

Keystone Kops “MOON”Reporter

2017 is upon us. The Midian Keystone Kops are cranking up for a fun year behind our new Chief Scott Shirkey and his Kop Board Gabe Keplar, Rick Brown, Richard Hubbard and Cameron Ferguson. Chief Scott is at the top of his game, hav-ing just won a 2016 Potentate Award for outstanding service to Midian Shrine. He comes into 2017 with some Chief experience, as we Midian Koppers lost our 2016 Chief, Danny Oliver, to the Black Camel, and “Shirk” had to step up to the plate and carry our unit through our loss and grieving. We had never lost a standing Chief, as I have reported before, and even though somewhat expected, it was hard to take the loss of such a great man and guy in our unit. Then his Lady Norma was taken to Heaven shortly thereafter. This put a double whammy on our emotions. Thanks, Brother Scott Shirkey; you did an outstanding job for us and we Koppers are certainly looking forward to a having you as our standing Chief in 2017! (Oh, that doesn’t mean we are just going to hand you that Gold Whistle “Shirk”, but you have a good start on earning it!)

By the time this Topics arrives in your mailbox, that Kop Board I mentioned will have been fully installed and having looked in all directions, will be charging forward with the Kop unit. We will have toasted new Chief Scott Shirkey (that is always fun for us Gold Whistles) and are making plans for the CSSA Keystone Kop Mid-Winter meet-ing led by 2017 Commissioner Bob Dukes.

We are proud here at Midian to have “Turf” make the grade and

be our CSSA Kops’ leader in 2017. It usually starts with a rousing trip to KC and back filled with plenty of fun and

fellowship with our Brothers from the CSSA Koppers. Although it is dubbed as a business meeting, it can sometimes go awry as only a Kop function can! Look for more info on how that turns out in a future Topics.

We Koppers will also have not one but two members on Illustrious Sir Rocky McWilliams Divan for 2017. Bob Herrman will be the 1st Ceremonial Master and Steve Mitchell will be the 2nd Ceremonial Master. Wow, it looks like we are loaded with Koppers everywhere this year. Let’s get 2017 rollin’!

Do any of you remember the bounty we used to have on crows in KS? We did have one years ago. Now we know the phrase “as the crow flies” means a straight line to anywhere. We also know how to eat some crow. Well, it seems sometimes that what I write here is not always factual and not always on purpose, but I have to eat some crow for something I posted in my January Topics article! I am not a virgin there either! Although in defense I always write to enter-tain, never to judge or bully anyone. Please remember that, fellow readers!

I Wonder?? Does it look like “double trouble” for Rocky in 2017?? I Wonder?? How far can a crow fly?? I Wonder?? When will spring be here?? I wonder??

Electraglide Elite N. B. FORREST, K. G. C.Reporter

Howdy, all! Here’s hoping this finds you and yours well and going strong into this New Year! We should take pause and congratulate Illustrious Sir Bart Ogden and Lady Lesa on a successful year in 2016 and at the same time, wish our newly elected and installed Potentate Rocky McWilliams and Lady Bev the very best of luck in 2017! As always, the Electraglide Elite will do all possible to help and support our leadership. We also welcome back our Liaison Officer Marshal Gary Gelvin Jr. and Lady Denise. Fortunately we didn’t say or do anything to offend them and we’re pleased to have them with us for another year!

As usual, the first quarter of the year looks to be very busy with circus planning coming quickly. Captain Robert will again be asking for our support with ticket and advertising sales, as well as participa-tion at the event, which is back at Intrust Arena again for 2017. This reporter is to understand that while attendance was good for 2016, circus goers didn’t spend novelty and concession money last year as they have in the past. Consequently, Midian’s overall numbers were down. The Circus

Management Group is work-ing hard to make adjustments

accordingly for this year’s show. We will be hearing all the detailed plans from our Circus Chairman Jerry

Elscott as we get a little bit closer…stay tuned.

Rumors are circulating that EE will have another garage sale at some point this year. Since we are out of the Kid’s Run business, we should all be thinking about raising funds and the garage sale has worked well a couple of times. There seem to be lots of “Pickers” out these days and we should think about growing our event some this time. Captain Robert will be open to your ideas so bring ‘em along!

Speaking personally, cabin fever has crept in and this reporter is ready to get on two wheels again as well as see everyone who has been in hibernation! Watch for approved parades and get-togethers and let’s make it happen! As is normal for this part of the planet, there is plenty of winter sand and the like on the streets and roads, so as decent riding days come – take another close look…stay out of the headlines!

We’ll see you when we see you.

at the Kansas Masonic Home, Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 11:55 am. There were 27 present including and one guest; Assistant Rabban Reiferd Acord. Our guest speaker for the January meeting was set for the Golden VIP’s President David Pate, PP, however, because of computer and projector issues his presentation will be at our February meeting instead.

Meeting called to order by President David Pate, PP at 11:55 am after a social period. The Flag Salute was led by Noble Bill Weber and the Invocation was given by Lady Joan Harris. After brief introduc-tions our members and guest enjoyed a lunch of Baked Pork with Gravy, Baked Chicken in a Salsa, Green Beans, Polenta, Dinner Rolls and Tossed Green Salad with a Pink Chiffon Cake for Desert.

After enjoying the food and warm friendship, Midian’s Assistant Rabban, Reiferd Acord was introduced and gave the membership information about what is happening around Midian for January and

February with other informa-tion. He encouraged all that

could attend both the January Stated Meeting as it will be the Election of Midian’s Officer’s for 2017.

Reiferd reminded us of Midian’s Circus at the Intrust Arena, April 21st, 22nd and 23rd. If anyone could help at the Circus, please contact Tracy at Midian, 265-9676. And don’t forget about ticket sales, ad sales and banner sales. The Unit would receive percentages of each of the sale items as our commission.

After the Midian information report, Assistant Reiferd Acord presented the President Noble David Pate, PP and his Lady Pat each of bottle of wine as his thanks for having him as our Liaison officer.

Greetings, Nobles and Ladies, and Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

The Midian Shrine Directors Staff members are looking forward to a fun and exciting 2017 with many parties, functions and fund raising endeavors, but as always, our group is looking forward most to the Spring & Fall Ceremonials!

We wish to thank everyone who came to the New Year’s Eve Party, especially Ricky & Jeanie Brotherton, as they once again invited and facilitated the atten-dance of many dancers who were mostly non-Shrine affiliated. Through the support of these guests and the numerous Nobles and Ladies who attended, we were able to raise nearly $1500 to contribute toward Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder’s Imperial Fund.

The raffle drawing for the Jordy Nelson Autographed Green Bay Packers Football Helmet was held at the NYE Party, which Noble and Directors Staff

Member Jim Price won. In turn, Noble Price was gracious and generous to

announce that he will re-donate the helmet to be auctioned at the 2017 Midian Super Bowl Party! All of these funds will go toward the Midian Shrine general fund.

Midian Directors Staff wants to extend a special welcome to the several Nobles and their Ladies who have recently joined our Unit. We look forward to growing together in our mission of fun, fellowship and philanthropy!

Should any Nobles (new or old) be interested in joining or contributing to our Unit endeavors, or simply learning more about who we are and what we do, please don’t hesitate to contact a Directors Staff member. Or if you or your Club or Unit are in need of our help or support, please let us know what we can do to assist.

Again, thanks for all of your support and assistance!

CartoonGreetings, and Happy New

Year from the Cartoon Unit!We elected and installed new of-

ficers: John Gracy (Cat in the Hat), President; Rick Alamo (Captain America Minion), Vice President; Kevin Moore (Sulley), Sgt. of Arms; John Aschenbrenner (Optimums Prime), Secretary; and Jason Armstrong (Buzz Lightyear), Treasurer.

We attended the Children’s Christmas party at Scottish Rite to the delight of many children. We once again were a HUGE hit in the Kid Zone hosted by the ARC of Sedgwick County at the Devlin Rod and Custom Show. Parades are great, but these face- to-face interactions with the kids are

one of the BEST things about being in the Cartoon Unit. When

the kids see you and smile, it makes all that sweating, poor visibility, sweat-ing, bulkiness, and sweating all worth

it. We truly bring fun and good will to all of the events we attend.

Our next appearance will be at the Intrust Arena for the Circle of Friends SOC walk, February 18, 9:30am -noon. This will be a great opportunity for any of you who would like to try out a costume and see for yourself how much fun we have with these special children. Just give John Gracy a call (708-4460) and he can help you pick from one of our spare costumes.

Recognized for their above-and-beyond assistance with Midian this year were two very special ladies. Although this is a men’s organization, we all know the importance of our Ladies and the role they fulfill the success of Midian. Frankly, we all know that without them - it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve the results we are accustomed to at Midian. I want to say thank you to ALL ladies of Midian for all they do. Throughout the course of this year we’ve tried to enhance the way we broadcasted information. Although there were MANY ladies involved with this over the past year, there are two ladies who went above and beyond with their efforts and achieved spectacular results. I would like to thank Lady Franny Hoch and Lady Alysha Greer Boggs for all their work this past year on social media and on Midian’s website and congratulate them for a job well done. In this age of information - sometimes information overload - without the hard work of these two ladies, we simply would not have been successful in getting infor-mation out to our membership in the positive and creative way it was accomplished. Another key part of our information strategy is the regular email blast to our member-ship. Countless hours behind the scenes go into the creation and maintenance of the email list as well as the multiple hours per week creating the email blasts for everyone. This is not accomplished easily as he regularly has to deal with issues with our internet service provider. Illustrious Sir David Pate was recognized for his commitment and assistance in 2016. Another key member of our information team this year was our photographer. He survived a motorcycle crash as well as the onslaught of children at the Easter Egg Hunt. I would like to say thank you to Noble Harold Brewer for all his assistance in 2016.

FRATERNAL SERVICE AWARDS Fraternal Service Awards were presented to the following Nobles. I have copied select portions of my awards introductions to give you all an idea of the commitment of these Nobles to our fraternity.

Henry Michael Paul “Hank” Wolenhaupt This Noble was created a Shriner in 2013. Since joining our Fraternity he has been instrumental and successful in Membership and promoting our events. He has served on the calling committee and continues to assist our Membership Chairman with Masonic Information Presentations. He continues to provide great input on Membership Ideas and Membership Develop-ment as well as input on how to make our events more successful. His assistance for the past 2 years on Midian’s Sportsmen’s Event were a key part of the growth of than event.

Scott ShirkeyThis Noble was created a Shriner in 2011. If there is one word that describes this Noble it is “Leadership”. Since his creation this Noble has consistently demonstrated the ability to lead, think, and adapt. Over the past 2 years his Leadership of his Unit has been excep-tional. He also knows the value of TEAM Building. The past year has been a difficult one for all members of this unit and this Noble (and his Lady, I might add) has been instrumental in keeping his unit members as well as the Ladies moving forward, engaged and active, and staying on-task with their goals as well as doing a fantastic job of honor-ing the memory of their departed Brother Noble Danny Oliver and his Lady Norma.

JR Gelvin Our final recipient of a Fraternal Service Award for 2016 was created a Shriner in 1998. He has been the Master of his Masonic Lodge and has been a driving force behind his non-parade unit. He can always be counted on to get things done - even under the tightest of deadlines. Serving in numerous capacities including Chief Aide in the past, he and his Lady have shown grace under pressure and have always proven that, as a Team, they can accomplish great things. I have been able to go to this Noble in the past as well as all year long this year and run things past him and have received great feedback on how things could be improved. In fact, this could be named the “Get ‘er Done” Award. This Noble recently received his Perpetual Lifetime Membership Award at the Decem-ber Stated Meeting.

2016 SHRINER OF THE YEAR Following is the introduction of our 2016 Shriner of the Year, Noble Douglas Chartier. “The 2016 Midian Shriner of the year was initiated and brought to light as an Entered Apprentice in Temple Lodge #6 , Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 10, 2001. He was passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft on June 28, 2001 and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on August 2, 2001. In fact, he was serving as Jr Steward when he moved to Wichita and became a member of Albert Pike #303 in 2009, with a Top-Line Signer of Illustrious Sir Roger Snellen. He has served at Albert Pike as Tyler, Senior Steward, Junior Deacon, and Senior Dea-con. He currently holds the Elected Position of Junior Warden at Albert Pike #303. He received an Outstanding Mason of Kansas Award from the Grand Lodge of Kansas on March 18, 2016 and continues to be an instrumental driving force in getting Masons to attend Albert Pike’s Study Club. I would also like to note that this Noble is honored by the fact that his Great Grandfa-ther was a Mason. So he is also a Shrine Legacy. He joined the Wichita Scottish Rite on April 30, 2011 and has been active in fundrais-ing and promotion with the Scottish Rite recently, including participating in their Zombie Shoot fundraiser where he QUOTE “received painful welting injuries where one should not receive painful welting injuries for one who is such a delicate flower”. After being created a Midian Noble in the Fall of 2007 he has joined several clubs and units at Midian and has served leadership roles in many of them including being elected as President of the Cartoons in 2012. He will be the Vice-President of the Director’s Staff in 2017 and he is one of the founding members of the newest units in Midian - the Midian Misfits, where he will serve as Treasurer and Secretary in 2017. This year’s recipient has been particularly instrumental in Midian Fundraising. He de-veloped the idea of the Chinese Auction at the Sportsmen’s Event which raised a signifi-cant amount of money. He sold over $1,000 worth of Circus in 2016. He came up with the idea of the Jordy Nelson Football Helmet Raffle which did very well and will continue to do well as that Helmet has been donated back and will be auctioned off at the Midian Shrine Super Bowl Party in February. This Noble has gone above and beyond in furthering Fraternal Relations. He has been instrumental in establishing a better relationship with our Prince Hall Masonic Brothers. Finally, our 2016 Shriner of the year excelled in Midian Membership Development where he top-lined 4 new Nobles in 2016. He was awarded his Yellow Honor Jewel Membership Bar tonight and has previously earned his Circus Jewel. This Noble currently serves as an Executive Potentate’s Aide and with the assistance of his Lady Michelle (my devious helper for tonight), has shown excellent leadership this year. It is my extreme pleasure to name as Midian’s 2016 Shriner of the year, Noble Doug Chartier.”------------------ Nobles and Ladies, the next time you see any of these Winners around Midian, please congratulate them for a job well done - and ask them how YOU can help! They’ve done a fantastic job in 2016 and are plugged in and committed for 2017 and beyond.
