As I tried to figure out what to write about for this article I kept drawing a blank. What do I really know about motorcycles? That’s Bob’s department. I know how to dress for the weather conditions and that I enjoy riding with him and our TRA gang. But then it hit me. My department is planning the ride and learning about where we are going and the sites along the way. On any road trip, you’ve got to stop for food, gas, and rest, so you might as well make the most of each stop. The adage, if you fail to plan you plan to fail, applies to a great road trip as well. A lot of time can be wasted on the road trying to make a decision if you don’t have some plans made ahead of time, especially in a debate of “I don’t know/care. What do you want to do?” After any planning, my mantra becomes, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape!” You never know what bumps you may encounter along the way. While working on plan A, work on plans B and C as well. Plan A includes your top priorities. Plans B and C are other options that would be good for part of your trip, but if you don’t get to those plans, that’s ok. Here are some tips for planning a great road trip: Begin with the end in mind. What’s your final destination? How much time do you have? This will determine if you need to take the interstate, the fastest route, or if you have time for the scenic by-ways. How many miles do you want or need to cover? How often do you need to stop for food and fuel? On the motorcycle, an hour and a half is about my max. Go by time for your rest stops because it takes a lot longer to cover distance at 30 mph than at 60 mph. Go by miles for your gas stops. How much time do you need for each stop? This is determined by the number of people in your group and what you are doing at the stop.

Who’s Up for a Road Trip? Once you determine your destination, miles, and necessary stops, you compare this to the time you have for the trip. Do you need to cut down on the miles or break them up over the time you have to get where you need to be at the end of the day? Know your limitations! Always round-up your figures so you have a cushion to reduce stress and relax! Add up total drive-time/day and total miles/day. This will help you determine if you have time for longer stops or more site-seeing. Then make adjustments. Now the fun part of planning begins! Look through guide books of the places you will be traveling through or where you will be stopping. Google the sites and places along your route. Always look for great places to eat. Learn a little bit of the history. For every site seeing stop or destination, I always have 2 or 3 options for each so that if the first option is unavailable, you won’t be disappointed. If you only have time for your first choice, that’s ok. There are some great apps for your smart phone as well. If you get to a stop or destination that you didn’t plan for, or have extra time on your hands, don’t panic! Every trip needs free-time built into it to relax or go exploring. Talk to the locals for recommendations. Who knows what treasures you’ll find? The number one tip for a successful and fun road trip is to have a good attitude! This is the most important factor. Look at every bump or wrong turn as an adventure. What missionary opportunities will you have? So, who’s ready for a road trip?

TRA Arizona Chapter Report By Debi Peterson

The Tucson contingent of the Arizona chapter of the TRA met Saturday, May 19th, south of Tucson on the I-10 freeway and Sonoita highway. We were continuing our plans for attending all of the Arizona temples during this calendar year on our motorcycles. The temple targeted for the day was The Gila Valley Temple, not the Gila Valley Temple, but rather “The Gila Valley Temple”. When I was looking it up on lds tools, I couldn’t find it in the “G”s. I finally found it in the “T”s. We had 5 Harley bikes and 1 Harley trike. Those attending were Steve & Vicky Empey, Ron McCurdy, Larry & Nan Peterson and Keith & Debi Peterson. We met at 7:30 and pulled into the temple parking lot at 9:30. just in time for the 10:00 session. The temple knew that we brought quality people with us as they asked Steve and Vicky to be the witness couple. After the session we found a restaurant to eat at, sat around and visited for a while and then Keith and I headed home through Globe and the rest of them headed back to Tucson via I-10.

Provo Chapter Breakfast Meeting & Ride – 5/19/2018 By Gail Paxton

Sixteen of us, mounted on twelve motorcycles, left our Golden Corral breakfast meeting at 9:30 to visit some historic sites along Highway 89. The first stop was the Chevron Station in Fairview for a little break before we headed to the Fairview Historical Museum. It occupies two buildings with an impressive variety of everything (well, not quite everything) from contemporary art, Sanpete County history, military displays, to a Mammoth skeleton. They also have a large area out behind the buildings filled with old farm machinery. As you view the pictures below you can understand how one could be trapped there. We had a very good lunch at the Club House at the golf course by Palisades State Park. Then we visited the Veterans Memorial in Gunnison and stopped for ice cream in Nephi. What a nice, relaxing day!!

Ogden Chapter By Brent Stuart

In what has become a tradition for the Ogden Chapter, we again volunteered to run an aid station along the Ogden Marathon course on May 19th. It was again (two years running) beautiful weather. Three members from the Cache Valley Chapter joined us, as well as one from Salt Lake Chapter and our fifteen members from the Ogden Chapter making a total of nineteen people and 9 bikes. We were again at Mile 5, which means we had to get up really early. The road officially closes at 6:00 am so everyone started arriving at 5:30 am and went right to work filling cups, mixing Gatorade, setting up signs, etc. The set up was done in record time. It might have helped in that the marathon folks were trying to be a bit more efficient and not waste as much so we didn't have as many cups to fill.

As the runners finished coming by everyone pitched in to clean up. That was done in quickly, so then we settled in to have our breakfast burritos. Thanks to Abby and crew for the breakfast. There was no ride after as Abby and I had to get to Salt Lake for an assignment at the Conference Center. Besides, after getting up so early, I thought it would be nice for everybody to go home and go back to bed. I appreciate all that showed up and the hard work everyone put in. It was fun to give back to the community in some small way. We are so blessed to live where we do and have the friends that we have and have the freedoms that we have. All and all, in was a wonderful day. We are planning on doing it again next year. Come join us. Happy riding everyone.

With excitement and great pleasure, we announce that John Thompson and his wife Danielle have been approved to be the Chapter Leaders of the Idaho Treasure Valley (IDTV) (Boise area) Chapter of the Temple Riders Association effective June 1, 2018 Please join us in congratulating John and Danielle. We’re looking forward to them contributing to the great heritage of the “Boise” chapter and to getting to know them better!! The Treasure Valley Chapter has a rich heritage of many great and beautiful rides, social activities and community service projects. We recognize and appreciate the great foundational work that Dennis and Vicki Wallace created over the years for the chapter and the contribution the many chapter members have made. The spirit of the TRA will continue to grow and flourish with John and Danielle’s leadership and direction.

2019 Christmas Social By Cliff Beattie

The annual TRA Christmas Social has been scheduled, and we're hoping that everyone can find room on their calendars for it. It will be held on Saturday, December 29th, from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm. The location will again be the Heritage Gardens in Sandy, UT. It was a great venue last year, and we're making plans to have our 2018 event just as nice. Moving it to the Saturday between Christmas and New Years in previous years has helped avoid holiday event conflicts, and we hope that will be the case again.

Volunteers Needed By Gail Paxton

I am looking for volunteers to assistance with our rally. If you are willing to lead a ride (should have a CB on your motorcycle), play hymns on the piano or lead singing at our Sacrament

SAFETY CORNER

Safety Information Submitted by Cliff Beattie

Motorcycle safety courses are one of the best way to learn, practice, and refresh the skills we need to keep us safe and alive while riding. Utah has an excellent set of classes that are geared to riders of any skill level. I heartily endorse them and have taken refresher courses several times. Rather than print all the information available, I recommend you go to the following URL and spend a few minutes looking around the page and deciding if this year might be the time to update your own safety practices. Safety courses FAQs. The State of Utah has also published statistics for a 10-year period detailing numbers of accidents, injuries, fatalities, etc. with a number of different riding variables. Generally speaking, it helps if you are NOT the driver, if you ARE a female, and if you AREN'T driving in Salt Lake County. Here's the link to those statistics: Utah Motorcycle Statistics.
