Goodbye cold weather, hello footy finals, warmer weather, wine tours…and hopefully finishing my paving.

Yes, the paving has been sitting there, half finished, since May, when the rains started and our backyard became a swim-ming pool of mud. I’m looking forward to finishing it so the warmer months can be spent outside, around a barbecue.

This issue, Transform Maga-zine welcomes back our super celebrity writers, Tara Dennis and Sarah Beeny, to offer their thoughts and tips on improving your home and lifestyle. Additionally you’ll find a new focus on food, as we enjoy some amazing ice cream creations (yum.)

I’d also like to put out the call to businesses throughout SA, for assistance with our “Transform My Home” articles that will start from next issue. If you’re in a

air conditioning

it’s heating up

Where do I start? There are lots of different sorts of air coolers on the market. Here’s a rundown of a couple of the systems available.

Evaporative coolers What are they? Outside air is drawn into the unit through a series of wet filter pads. Water is evaporated into this air stream, cooling and humidifying it. The cool air is then blown through ducting and into the house.

To work effectively evaporative coolers must have adequate ven-tilation to exhaust this air outside, which means doors and/or window need to be open. The area of open windows and doors to exhaust the air should be approximately one metre square for each cubic metre of air flow.

Reverse cycle air conditionersThe two main types of reverse cycle air conditioners for household use are wall hung split systems and ducted split systems. While both can be efficient, ducted systems tend to be more efficient at mixing the room and conditioned air. Some also may choose ducted air conditioning to keep the units off the internal walls and out of sight.

What to look for Size matters: If you get too small a model, it may run continually with-out cooling the room properly. If it’s too big, a non-inverter will cycle on and off more frequently and won’t de-humidify the air.

Energy efficiency: Once you’ve worked out what capacity you need, compare the star ratings of models of similar capacity - the more stars the better.

Energy efficiency and the right ducting: When installing your air conditioner ensure your installer is using properly insulated ducting. Why? To make your air conditioning system the best it can be you must have the best ducting. In the height of summer, the space in your roof can be up to 65°C. Ductair manufac-tures Energy Smart air conditioning duct from 80% recycled raw materi-als and yet Energy Smart achieves an amazing 87% higher thermal rating than most other ducting. This ducting has recently undegone independent university testing with great results, like reducing your running costs and greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 10% and reducing peak power demand by an incredible 30%.

Simply by using the Ductair Energy Smart insulated ducting home owners could effectively purchase a lower unit capacity air conditioner. For example a 16 Kw unit instead of an18 Kw unit, saving money on the initial air conditioning unit purchase.

Airflow: The air conditioner’s fan circulates the cooled or heated air around the room. Ideally, you want your air conditioner to have a big range of airflow settings. A high maximum airflow will help distribute the air in a room more quickly, but the higher the airflow, the noisier and draughtier. So you also want a low fan setting that still circulates the air, but does so quietly - especially if you’re using the air conditioner in your bedroom.

Eco supply air outlets: Allow the air to be distributed more evenly, increase comfort on heating and cooling and achieves a rapid mix of room and conditioned air for a more uniform comfort without draughts.

Bek Schapel

...again!OK so it’s spring, it’s probably a little cold outside still, but by preparing for the on-slaught of summer now you won’t be one of the many South Aussies waiting in line for an air conditioner the first day after a scorcher

“The strongest colour trends emerging reflect the recent more positive consumer outlook” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux’s leading Colour Forecaster.

“The global financial crisis had a huge effect on colour selection,” explains Andrea. “Global forecasts of a bright, vibrant season were abruptly reversed. Overnight colours were reduced to muted, conservative and neutral colours. We’re now seeing the attitude of a more optimistic consumer.”

On the verge of a brighter future, a feel good palette of oranges, pinks are purples, capture the current mood celebrate our renewed outlook on life post GFC.

Another trend is colours for the new decade are dedicated to the technology addicts amongst us – the tweeters, facebookers, iPhone and iPad lovers.

“Smooth and clean lines are coming through from Europe and Japan, including B&B Italia with their stylish exterior furniture range,” explains Andrea.

“The result is a trend towards pow-erful feature walls using for example Dulux Namadji, a near black grey, in combination with Dulux Lexicon, a white with grey undertones.”

Finally, a colour palette reflecting the ‘human touch’ and heightened consumer awareness influencing product choice.

Products that are natural and carbon neutral are the catalysts behind this palette. This is dem-onstrated by the earthiness of the colours within this palette. Subtle greens and browns in many shades are such colours to look for in this palette.

So what colours are in for the next year and beyond? We speak to Dulux chief colour guru, Andrea Lucena-Orr about some of the colours we will see roaming about over the next year.

colour feature

Now we know what colours will be making an appearance in interiors in the next year, but the big question stands…how do we introduce them into our homes? We speak to a few experts and get their thoughts.

New Yorker, Diane Bergeron, is an interior designer who has recently opened a showroom in Australia. Diane’s tells us that feature walls are out. Instead putting colour on all walls of a room is back in style and the way to go.

She’s suggests that we, “Use fabric on walls rather than paint or wall-paper, as it can really freshen up a room.”

“If you’re choosing bright colours try using them on a brightly coloured rug or cushions.”

Inspirations Colour Consultant, Fran Powel-Hill disagrees telling us that feature walls are a fantastic and inexpensive way to add life and colour to a room. (Arhh! Just shows you that even designers don’t agree!)

Which wall and where?

Fran recommends looking at the style of your house when choosing where to place your feature wall. “A few walls to consider are the chimney breast and adjoining walls, bedrooms - the bed head wall, a lounge / family room - behind

the lounge suite, behind a Flat Screen TV or entertainment unit or stairwell wall.”

“There is a misconception that a feature wall should be the first wall that you see on entering a room. That isn’t necessarily the best wall, use a wall without doors and unless framing a view, not a window wall.” Fran tells us.

introducing colour

“If you’re renting find a throw rug and cushions and large canvas or two. Paint the canvas in colours the same as the rug and cushions for an affordable ‘Scheme’ used in any area, but which can change from room to room.”

from the experts

Spring is synonymous with bright and happy colours – find inspiration in nature, in the crisp cool mornings and lingering afternoon sunshine – and set about decorating your home with the very essence of spring.

This spring, you can expect to see warmth reflected in the vibrant violets, warm tangerines, sunny yellows and grass greens in both homewares and fashion fabrics. Floral patterns with a retro flair will continue to dominate – their happy colours and fun, fresh style will shout ‘spring’ and evoke the feeling that everything old is new again.

Spring is all about fresh and new so why not inject new life into your home with these quick ideas:

Decorate with the things you love. If that means a favourite scarf, use it as a pretty throw for a chair and build a whole colour scheme around it. Your home will soon reflect your personality and inner sense of style.

If you’re tired of the TV ‘hogging’ the lounge room, try re-arranging the furniture to create two rooms

in one. Flip the arm chairs around to face the other way and, space allowing, add a day bed to create a cosy conversation area. The sofa can remain opposite the TV for a layout that really works.

Spice up a room without the hassle of painting by simply adding an accent chair covered in a stunning fabric. One of my favourites this sea-son is the Plush Harper chair in Mizu Blossom. It ticks all of the boxes for fresh and bang-up to-date style.

Flowers always make decorating impact in a room. Having a selec-tion of vases on hand, short and tall, means you’ll be ready for any gorgeous blooms that happen to take your fancy.

The key to a successful display is good organisation as well as rep-etition of shape colour or style. By arranging limited items, groupings will appear orderly, by choosing things you love; you’ll add warmth and character to a room.

Add interest and balance to a sofa with end or side tables.

For real designer flair, hang a large picture or mirror above it or group together a bunch of smaller frames.

If framed art is not for you – how about this decorator’s trick anyone can do – just grab two different sized canvases, paint the larger one a solid colour and staple fabric to the other. Hang them both together for knock-out style.

Cupboards and shelves ‘assembled yourself’ are great for extra storage. I also love the great range of stor-age ottomans on the market which are so practical and add character to any room.

For a final flourish, large potted plants in cane baskets add instant green lift and capture the essence of spring.

1. Carry out thorough research. Check local rental conditions, analyse rental demand and deter-mine the types of renting in your area. Look for obvious clues such as a large company relocation, the opening of trendy bars and shops, or the existence of good schools nearby and choose a property with features that will appeal to your market.

2. An appealing property rental is one that is close to transport links and/or has off street parking.

3. If you plan to rent your property to professionals, all of the bed-rooms should ideally be doubles.

4. Think low maintenance. You want a property that will run itself as smoothly as possible.

5. If you are managing the property yourself, be prepared to do some hard work. A buy to let property is far from being a hassle free income.

6. Choose a property close to home, which will enable you to pop over and sort out any problems easily. If you are not able to do this it can cost you more than a weeks rent to get someone in.

7. Bear in mind that family rental homes require plenty of space and storage

8. If you are the sole freeholder of the property, you will need to ensure that the common parts and the exterior of the property are well maintained. You may wish to spend a couple of hours a week vacuuming and polishing or employ a professional cleaning company to keep these areas up to scratch. If your buy to let is leasehold, however, the responsi-bility for the maintenance of the exterior and interior communal areas will rest with the freeholder unless your lease specifically states otherwise.

9. Steer clear of large gardens, especially in a town property, unless you intend adding the cost of a gardener to the weekly rental and you are aiming to market your property as a family home. As any keen gardener knows it doesn’t take long for a little neglect to show.

10. Consider whether you want to let furnished or unfurnished. Sometimes there is little difference between the rents commanded by unfurnished compared with part or fully furnished properties to let. It all depends on your market and the demand in your area. Before you go looking for furniture, do your research and find the best option for you.

we all scream

Australian’s love their ice cream! In fact, we each gobble down about 18 litres a year. More than any other country with the exception of our cousins across the ditch and, as many might expect, the Americans!

Now winter’s cold chill has left us and the warmer days of spring beckon...there’s no better time to brush up on what type of ice creams and sorbets you should be serving as the appetite for these frozen delights heats up with the rising mercury! There are no hard and fast rules, but Sarah Mandelson, CEO of Australia’s most-awarded ice cream-maker ‘Serendipity’, has some tips for Transform Magazine readers that will win the approval of your harshest food critic.

“As we thaw out and think of warm-er evenings and entertaining again, think spring thoughts with ice cream and fresh or lightly poached seasonal fruits, or a glass of sorbet with a nip of something tangy like Italian digestivo Limoncello”.

“Likewise, people drink coffee all year round, including the warmer months and since its introduction from Italy, the ‘Affogato’ has become a staple in most restaurants and cafes. Why not drop a generous scoop of a beautiful ice cream into your fresh aromatic coffee”.

(The Affogato is a coffee that is served as either a short or long black, with a scoop of ice cream. It is a derivative of the Italian word ‘affogando’ which means ‘drowning’).

Sarah Mandelson has created some of the most daring and deli-cious ice creams manufactured in Australia from her award-winning ‘Fig, Honey & Pistachio’ which goes wonderfully well with warm poached pears, to the incredibly delicious and aptly named ‘Peanut Butter Disaster’ which achieved its moniker in the testing room when Sarah, who is not a fan of peanut butter, ate the entire 500ml sample in one go! It is the perfect companion to any chocolate-based dessert or something more adventurous like a Frozen Butter Pecan Crunch.

Sarah’s Suggestions In addition to the dessert sug-gestions above, here are a few of Sarah’s favourite drinks utilising ice cream or sorbet.

• Shot of espresso with Belgian White Chocolate ice cream and a shot of Frangelico – perfect any time of the day

• Shot of espresso with Dark Rum & Raisin ice cream and a shot of

Pedro Ximenez sherry – for a late night beverage

• Champagne Vodka Cocktail with Lemon Sorbet – mix two cups of lemon sorbet (or passionfruit sorbet) in a blender with 2 cups of cham-pagne, 6 tablespoons of Vodka and 6 tablespoons of whipping cream. Blend ingredients and serve in champagne flutes to toast the warmer weather.

• Lime Sorbet Margarita – a drink or a dessert you can throw together with some seasonal fruits: Place two scoops of lime sorbet in a cocktail glass and drizzle over a tablespoon or two of Tequila and grab a spoon. Wonderfully refreshing!

real opinion

For the last couple of years I have worked less in my office and more from home. It has been easier and I have loved my environment. In the last couple of weeks I was hit by the sudden urge to move back into my office. I had known for a long time, that my business in order to continue its success really needed my energy. I was at a loss as to why I had no desire to be there.

I was only back within the office walls for a matter of minutes before I could bear it no more! What I had failed to recognise was that my lack of interest and effort had resulted in an awful and depressed environ-ment. Whilst the front of my office was glamorous and a picture of perfection, the heart of my business, “the engine room”, was a morgue in comparison. The space was tired, part painted, had worn carpets and was a maze of wires, over sized desks and clutter. Since I wasn’t spending copious amounts of time there, it wasn’t affecting me on a daily basis, but immediately I felt for the rest of my team.

I had a sudden urge for colour! It was exactly the same feeling you get when your body needs veggies!

In the past I have relied upon designers and colourists to make such decisions and again, I have ended up with their choices. This time I needed to take responsibility.

So, with Dave my handyman in tow, I headed for the paint store. It is an overwhelming situation when you have colour charts and samples surrounding you, however I was determined to make the selection.

I decided to do it intuitively and let my feelings and body do the guiding. I was inevitably drawn to a gorgeous zesty shade of green. (To be honest it is the complete opposite of what I would have ordinarily selected.) Still, I held the faith and couldn’t wait to see it up on the walls.

I was simply amazed at the immediate transformation. With every stroke, our space came to life. It seemed to energise not only our surroundings, but also us. The very sight of it made me feel happy and I got every one of our team to grab a roller and put some of their own energy into our office walls. Once up, it reminded me of the colour of money! I felt sure that it was going to be good for business. When I read an article about the colour green it mentioned that it was representative of balance, har-mony, success, expansion and new growth. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, these are all the things that are top of my agenda.

With one coat up, six business enquiries flooded into our office the very next day!

The positivity that was radiating from the colour seemed to perk up everyone’s spirits. A new passion and enthusiasm literally swept our office. A business offer that signified a new beginning came to me with-in twenty four hours of the change of colour. Then two sales transpired within forty eight hours.

My sudden desire for colour has also seen me paint out the dark walls in my reception and customer lounge, in favour of a gorgeous lilac. Again, a colour that I would not ordinar-ily have selected. It looks soft and inviting and is a welcome change from the harsh cold colour that it replaces. Maybe it is a reflection of how I am changing as an individual.

Home is not only where your heart should be, but so is work. Ensure that your environment whether it be home or the office is one that brings out your best. Don’t surround yourself with stopped clocks, dead flowers, broken items, photos of ex partners, old company logos and material....

...and be a little adventurous with colour.

Jo Lemmer
