Koh Phangan is situated far from the mainland but close to Koh Samui. The island is a paradise in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Phangans charm lies in its striking nature, beautiful beaches, clear water, gorgeous forests, waterfalls as well as being a quiet and peaceful community.

Koh phangan is a district in Suratthani Province. The island covers an area of 193 sq.km which makes it the second largest island next to Koh Samui.

Surrounding the island are lovely beaches. Koh Phangan covers an area of large fertile forest, rich in flora and blessed with waterfalls. The place also has important archaeological sites that reflects Phangans past communities

Haad Rin Beach and “Full Moon Party”Haad Rin is situated at the southeast of Koh Phangan and is about 12 km from Thong Sala Pier. Tourists can reach this place either by boat or by car.The beach is great for swimming. Sunbathing, and exploring coral reefs along the shoreline on both sides of the bay. At the end of Haad Rin lies a line of dead corals. Outer Haad Rin is great for swimming all year round.Haad Rin is the most famous beach on Koh Phangan as this is where the Full moon Party is held. The beach is 2 km long. The party is popular among foreign tourists who are impressed by the beauty of the full moon.Through word of mouth the party is known all over the world. When Full Moon Party approaches people travel from far and wide to Koh Phangan Passenger boat are all full with tourists and there is excitement in the air. Extra ferry boat leave Samui and Koh Tao to take people to Phangan. As full moon night approaches Haad Rin starts to get busy. Stalls and bars emerge along the beach and music builds up the atmosphere. Lights twinkle and as the moon gently rises from the sea the party starts to escalate in energy and everyone starts to dance wildly to the music. The party has become enormous of the years and is well worth making the effort to join in the fun.

Koh Phangan district covers an area of 6 islands: Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Nangyuan, Koh Tae Nog, Koh Tae Nai, and Koh Ma. It is divided into 3 sub-districts, 17 villages. The sub-districts are: Koh phangan sub-district with 8 villages that covers 105 sq. km, Ban Tai sub-district with 6 villages covers 66 sq.km, and Koh Tao sub-district that includes 3 villages with the total area of 22 sq.km.

Koh Phangan is a social-structued community. The history of administration can be traced back to King Rama II to III time. Some archaeological evidence reveals that Koh Phangan has been a social community at least since the late Ayutthaya time
