Perspectives on Life

Gautama Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama was born around 566 B.C. in the smallkingdom of Kapilavastu.)

→ “How can I enjoy a life of pleasure when there is so much suffering inthe world?" – when he saw a lot of people who were in misery, he decidedto go away from the palace and seek the end of suffering.→Nothing is lost in the universe – In this world, nothing is wasted, andinstead when something is destroyed it will be a source of new life. We arethe same as plants, as trees, and as other human beings. We consist ofthat which is around us; we are all equal in everything. If we destroysomething around us, we destroy ourselves. If we cheat another, we cheatourselves.→ Everything Changes – Everything is constantly changing / transforming. Life is like a river flowing on and on, ever-changing.→Law of Cause and Effect- It is usually called “KARMA”. Nothing ever happens to us unless we procure it. We receive exactly what we earn, whether it is good or bad. We are who we are now because of the thingswe made in the past. Our thoughts and actions that we will make, willdetermine the kind of life we can have.

Lao Tzu (Father of Taoism)→ He thought that people who struggle and strive are not only futile butalso counterproductive. One should strive hard to do nothing. It means notto literally do anything, but to distinguish and follow the natural forces - tofollow and shape the flow of events and not to pit oneself against the

natural order of things. It is also mastering the circumstances byunderstanding their true nature or principal, and then shaping ones actionsinto a better one. Humans should be inevitable in his/her actions.→ He believed that “simplicity” is the key to truth and freedom. Lao Tzupersuaded his followers to observe, and seek to understand the laws ofnature; to develop intuition and build up personal power; and to use thatpower to lead life with love.

MANALO 2

Confucius (was a thinker , political figure, & an educator)→ His main interest was to figure out ways for the government to do abetter job of taking care of the people .→ He taught the great value of the power of example. Confucius said thatleaders/rulers can be great if they live admirable lives and if they arewilling to be guided by moral principles→ Confucius himself had a simple moral and political teaching: to loveothers; to honor one's parents; to do what is right instead of what is ofadvantage; to practice "" don’t do unto others what you would nof others todo unto you" .→ Confucius thought that “a ruler’s job is to govern not to kill”.

Mohammad (was born in Mecca, in the year 570 AD ) →

Gandhi (mahatma- great soul) (he was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar,India)

→He was one of the most respected spiritual and political leaders.→ “How can I make difference so that I may bring peace to this world thatI love and cherish so much? A name flickers instantly in my mind .” → Gandhi was a great soul who loved even those who fought against hisideals to bring about peace with non- violence.→ Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment andthe other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times moreeffective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.

→ an eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.

→ we must become the change we want to see in the world

John Baptist de La Salle (Born at Reims, France April 30, 1651 ) → the teacher determines the relative intelligence of every student in hisclass.→He adapts his language and explanations to the capacity of

understanding of his class.→ he had made the will of God the guiding principle of his life, he decidedto give himself up completely to the service of the Lord.
